My all-time favourite book, a real page turner

I recommend Bad Hare Days, the memoir of an animal protection activist. It's actually more like a thriller than your typical autobiography. The author, Irishman John Fitzgerald tells of his lifelong battle against the cruel sport of hare coursing in his country...battling not only the coursing organisation, but its powerful political patrons and elements in the police force that actively supported the hare-baiting.

His vivid descriptions of picket line confrontations, the activities of militants who acted outside the law (by sabotaging hare coursing venues, releasing captive hares etc), and police interrogations of "ALF" suspects, are absolutely rivetting.

Though an advocate of exclusively peaceful campaigning, the author was among the many campaigners targeted by police when they moved to crush the militant anti-coursing factions.

As an animal protection myself, the book appealed to me and I found it a most compelling, and, at times, entertaining read.
