School for the Disabled Fight Club

Well, this one made my stomach churn. Why would these pieces of garbage find this funny or entertaining? I am very close to this story, as I have two children on the spectrum....these "employees" have no idea how lucky they are that these are not my sons who were abused. God help them if they were. MOO

I saw this article yesterday and I was completely appalled. Not only did someone think it would be entertaining to allow mentally disabled patients to fight each other, but they found seven others who agreed with them. Seven employees of this hospital were involved in coordinating these fights, and not one thought to put a stop to it or go to the authorities (until much later, and the article wasn't clear about who turned in the videos). I can't even imagine how this came to be. If someone approached me about setting up fights between mentally disabled people, I would likely say a few choice words to them before turning them into the police. What kind of person says "Oh yea, that sounds like a great idea. Let's do it!" I cannot for the life of me understand that.

There are some incredibly sick people in this world. I weep for our species.

As always, IMO.

Another story-
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/255801.html

"......despite 1000 reports of abuse or neglect brought last year, only 60 were ever confirmed by authorities."

A state institution with state employees......doesn't give one much confidence in the "system," does it?

Flamming Mad No Excuses!

This story just made me sick!

Tip of the iceberg if you ask me. More like this out there but not yet brought to the headlines.
I am one that believes there are many teachers that are bullies!

Only 60 confirmed abuse/neglect reports even though family members provided photos? This place was still operating?!? Maybe the ones that investigated these abuse/neglect reports should be investigated also!!! The day staff didn't notice?

My 18 year old daughter lives in a residential program and after reading this link I am so glad it is not a Texas program.

Ah yes, the state school in Corpus Christi. What you have to understand is that these things don't happen in a vaccuum. That this happened in CC is significant. I lived in CC for 25 years, and the basic mentality is pretty cruel. Its not shocking at all that no one reported it. THis is a city drowing in corrpution and violence. Parents and families of the residents have been asking for helo with the abuse problems for YEARS, with little or no response. CC is the kind of place that gives us people like Hannah Overton and her ilk. Its fairly rife with them and child abuse is far more common than not. The mentality there for many is that children are property to do with as they please. I can tell story after story of the horrible things people do. In the rest of the country, people are shocked and sickened. In CC they're wondering what all the fuss is about, its business as ususual for something like this to happen.

My understanding is that the fights were recorded on a cell phone which somehow the cops found and saw it and that led to an investigation. I am not sure how the cell phone came to be in police hands.

Yep. its pretty horrible. Since the families have been complaining for years about this, it must have been horrible for them to know it was going on and not have anyone believe them. I can't imagine what they went through.

I haven't lived in CC for years so I can neither confirm nor deny your claim of rampid corruption & violence. But I am bothered by your overgeneralization. Many in CC are wonderful & kind people. And I strongly beleive most of the child abuse occurs in secret with no one knowing. This is the case with Hannah Overton. NO ONE who knew her suspected she was guilty of being anything but too strict. They never knew abuse occured & most still refuse to believe it!
