Does this mean she did not make it to the doctor's appointment in Loma Linda? I am curious to know if it has been verified she made the last call on her cell phone. Before school to 11 pm is quite a gap in time.

"Hurst was scheduled and is believed to have attended a class at the University of La Verne satellite campus at Victor Valley College on Thursday evening, the release said. "

So it seems something happened after the class. I wonder at what time the class ended, and to whom she made the call at 10:54 pm.

Local single mother reported missing
<snips>
...The last sign of Hurst before she was reported missing was Thursday at about 11 p.m., according to a police report, when her cell phone was used in Hesperia. Detectives were able to locate its signal in the vicinity of a cell tower on Mariposa Road. Investigators have no further details on that call, Libby said.Hurst’s car was found in the area of Olive Street and Second Street in Hesperia with no signs of damage or forced entry, according to Barstow Police Det. Keith Libby. The car’s windows were down and its key was still in the ignition, according to a police report......Hurst was studying to become an elementary school teacher. Hurst, a single mother, has a 12-year-old and 8-year-old daughter.....Walsh said she spoke regularly by telephone with Hurst, who lived in an apartment complex on Muriel Drive. Their last conversation happened last week and Hurst was talking about getting over a flu....
...**Police believe that they know someone who may have some connection to the case, according to Libby, but could not provide further details because the investigation is ongoing*****....

Police seek info on man in case of missing Barstow mother
<some snips>
A Helendale man who checked himself into psychiatric care Monday was romantically involved with a missing Barstow woman and may have more knowledge or be involved in her disappearance last week....Barstow Police believe Jeami Chiapulis, 36, is connected to Leisa Ann Hurst, 30, who was reported missing after her orange Honda Element was found abandoned in Hesperia, said Barstow Police Det. Keith Libby....Hurst..had visited Chiapulis’ home in the Silver Lakes neighborhood of Helendale several times in the past, according to Libby.Police conducted two searches of Chiapulis’ home, once on Sunday with his consent and again on Monday with a search warrant. During the searches, investigators found several pieces of evidence that led them to believe that Chiapulis had more knowledge about Hurst’s disappearance...On Monday, Chiapulis checked himself into the psychiatric ward of an unidentified hospital... He has since been uncooperative with investigators,...Chiapulis is married and his wife is employed outside of California, Libby said. Police have found at least two other women that were romantically involved with Chiapulis,....

As a family member of Leisha's... I hope they catch whomever did this to her.. and that they get the justice they deserve. Leisha never deserved this.

Welcome, Samoria. I'm so sorry that this is happening to your family. I think the police know who did it and it's only a matter of finding Leisha and enough evidence to arrest and convict the guy. I'm not sure if that's justice or not, but it's the best we can do. Prayers for Leisha and her family.

I live in Hesperia and have wondered why there has been nothing about Leisha in our local papers. Has there been new developments?
If she was on her way to VVC, I wonder why she was on the other side of main street? Did she get lost or did someone interfere and that is how she ended up so far away from the school? Coming from Barstow, she would never have had a reason to drive past the school and end up where her car was found if she didn't get lost, make a weird detour, or was interfered with.
Are there any searches planned? Myself and many others locals would like to help in any way that we can. Feel free to PM me about anything. Thank you and I send my thoughts and prayers to Leisha and her family.

I don't know why they haven't published much.... maybe to prevent the kids from being upset by it further? I wish they did though...
I don't know anything about this guy... I do know they have an ongoing investigation, so maybe that's why there are no publications on it..? I don't know much more past that...
As for her car, I think someone drove it there. There is no reason for her to be out there. I really think something happened and someone else drove her car there.

Thanks for the updates, omsk.
Detectives found evidence they said strongly linked Chiapulis to Hurst’s dissapearance after searching his home twice, Libby said, but the man has not been named as a suspect.
And, welcome to the board, Lynn. I don't know why Leisha's disappearance doesn't get more press.

The facts that Chiapulis was romantically involved with Hurst, that he is married, that LE has found linking evidence in his home, that he checked himself into a psychiatric unit, and that he is uncooperative..are pretty significant. I'm surprised he's not been named a suspect or at least a POI yet, unless LE just hasn't disclosed that.
I wonder if his wife has returned.

I wish I could wake up from this nightmare...
I feel so horrible for Leisha's family. I am so sorry. On the 22nd I did not go to class because I was sick however, I did see her car out here in Silver Lakes passing by the Market when I went to check the mail. I didn't see who was driving it and I saw it out here frequently so I thought nothing of it. Until, I got to class the next thursday night 1-29-09 and a friend handed me the missing poster of Leisha. I couldn't believe it my heart just sank. The past couple of weeks I hoped that she would be found safe and sound. I pray that her girls are okay and I know that they are going to be cared for but they were Leisha's life. She is such an amazing Women, Mother and Friend. I miss her very much. If I can do anything to help in the search please let me know.

You should get in touch with her mother, Debra. I believe they are organizing searches. I'd be there if I weren't so far away with my classes and my son... I'm sure they can use all the help they can get.

How do I get in touch with her Mother?
I would love to help but I do not know how to get in touch with her mother? I am going to be in Barstow today and would love to help plan a search. I am not always in Barstow. Thank you and have a blessed day! Leisha and I went to school together and I miss her so much!

The Desert Dispatch (on-line news source) reported this morning the second search will be held Sat. 21st, 8 a.m. same location: corner of Helendale Road & Shadow Mountain, Helendale, CA. This location is between Victorville and Barstow, off US Hwy 66.
http://www.desertdispatch.com/news/h...w_missing.html
Volunteers should:
Meet at the designated meeting location at 8:00 am on Saturday.
Be prepared to hike/drive around in the desert all-day (during daylight
hours), bring sufficient food & water, sturdy shoes, and possibly rain
gear. Cell phone, 2-way radio, a compass and/or a GPS is extremely useful. We are trying to get individual maps pre-printed.

Thank you Kip, I'm not really new though, I just didn't want to sign in with my usual name as I was posting where I live and felt paranoid using my normal name. Again, thank you for your welcome, you are sweet!

I did sign up with Trinity to participate in the search. I am so glad that they stepped in to help. I met with Leisha's Mom the other day! She is a very strong woman I might add. Thank God for her strength for the children's sake. I have also contacted University of La Verne to invite others to participate in the search so I hope we have a great turnout and locate Leisha soon!
My Prayers go out to Leisha and her Family!

Good for you! And that's great that you contacted the university. Remember, even nothing is found in the search, it still provides useful information -- it's that much ground that you know holds no clues as to Leisha's disappearance.

ULVGrad, thank you for participating in the search. I hope very much that her mom and her children will gain some comfort from the volunteers" caring.
Do you happen to know if Chiapulis is out of the psychiatric unit, or if he has been named a suspect? Any information about that?

Leisha's justice
I was reading this thread and had to register and comment. I am close to the wife of chiapulis and after hearing of this tragedy I have prayed continuously for Leisha's family, her girls, her mother. I also can not help but pray for the wife of what appears to be an evil man. I am positive she had no idea as to the events that were taking place while she was off to war and then moved to another state by the army, how horrifying for her as well. But most of all, I think of the children, Leisha's girls.
If i were in the area i would do anything i could to help find Leisha and show support to her family. lets pray for all the innocent victims in this case and have faith in our justice system to do right by Leisha and her family. I hope that soon, closure comes to light so that the real heeling process can start. I could not imagine what any of the innocent in this case are going through.. I will continue to pray for everyone and for an end to the search for Leisha. I hope the 12 and 8 year old girls are doing the best they possibly can in this situation and that the future becomes a little easier on them.

Please Note that Her Name is Spelled L.E.I.S.A.
Hello All,
I just wanted to let everyone know the proper way to spell Leisa's name. Her name is pronounced the same as Lisa! I will keep everyone posted on searches and any information that we recieve. Thank you so much for all of your support and we also feel for Jeami Chiapulis's wife and what she must be going through as well.

Yes...the family members of murderers are frequently peripheral victims.
Their lives are turned upside down, most importantly in terms of emotions and trust, but aslo, often, financially.
Edited to add: Re the misspelling of Leisa's name, I've emailed Coldwater to correct it in the thread title.

Last night on the local news it was reported that Leisa's remains were located in the desert near Barstow after her boyfriend told LE where to look. (I'm going to search now to see if I can find a link verifying this information.)

Thanks for the update, Dulcinea. I'm glad for the family's sake that Leisa was found. I wonder what the maximum sentence is for 2nd degree murder.

I remember how very hard Leisa's friends worked in the search for her body. Though I hate the fact that Chiapulis will have a reduced sentence for what he did, finally Leisa can be put to rest, for her two daughters and her mom. Nevertheless it's so very sad for them, I remember reading how close Leisa was with her daughters. God bless them all.

Of course, this is bad news, but I think we all knew it was coming. And it's good news that this guy finally gave up her location. Bless her precious daughter's.
I'm glad they can put her to rest finally.
