Is there an age where you are too young to have custody?

I mean these kids can't drive, they can't work, they can't be out after the state's curfew, they can't even legally get a hotel room.

But the state let's them keep a baby.

Because the states stupid a$$ theory 'it's best to keep the family together' crap doesn't actually take the babies well-being into account. IMO anyways.

You can get charged as an adult at 14, so apparently you are capable of rational thinking. I can't believe these kids lived on their own though, unless someone put an apt/house in their name along with ultilities considering you cannot get utilities in your name until you are 18. So I would be expecting more charges to come along, also why wasn't there at least a social worker that came to the house to check on them, if they were alone that is?

Who says? I had my own apartment in JUST my name and utilities at 16. It's called emancipation of minors.

So two 14 year olds were emancipated? No way am I buying that, 16 is usually when you can get emancipated IF you can show you can take care of yourself, where can a 14 year old get a job? I really think they are going to plea this kid out.

Why not? Btw, in my personal experience I didn't have to prove anything. The stae emancipated me instead of foster care. Same with my cousin who was living in the same house.

And yes. A 14 year old can work ANYWHERE.

And I know how it used to work with being married that young, the parents had to sign. That's how it worked for my parents (man my white trash upbringing is showing through in this post LOL).

Any new news on the baby's condition? I wonder if these 2 had any parenting classes?

At 14 I was a CNA and worked the evening shift 3-11, picked up the 11-7 shift when possible. All I needed was working papers which were provided by my high school administration office.

Most states require the permission of both parents and a court order allowing marriage under the age of 16, some allow marriage as low as 14 with only parental consent. In NH you can marry at 13 provided you have parental consent. Some states waive the age minimum when there is a pregnancy or child which simply doesn't seem a valid reason & almost seems to encourage the strong willed teen to create that situation, IMO.

Not where I am from, they don't let 14 year olds work, not even at McDonald's. The emancipation I can only base on from when I was younger, she had to prove she could take care of herself, she wanted to get married. My daughter couldn't work anywhere until she was 16 and the school had to sign the slip.

I am not certain, but I think if you get a work permit as a young teen, you can work a certain amount of hours.

But, a teen that would beat an infant doesn't strike me as one that is going to apply for a work permit, go to high school and catch the bus to get to work.

Poor baby.

I hope nobody in the family gets that baby. It doesn't sound like there was adult supervision for those kids for a long time

In NY you can. I asked my neighbor since her daughter works at a grocery store (at 14) and she didn't have to do anything special. My husband also worked at the same store (many years ago) at 14.

The families give an awful lots of excuses, don't they?

I still don't see how this baby was so mistreated, with both old and new injuries and none of the adults, seemed to notice.

That was my first thought also until I read that the ER had no idea why the baby was unresponsive until they ran tests. So I guess it isn't as visable in as I'd imagine those kind of injuries would be.

On a side note, JD1974, I googled Indiana and yes, a 14 year old CAN work with a permit in your state also. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Can_a_14-year-old_in_Indiana_get_a_job

I would think that, in Angel's case, it has already been proven the family home is not a safe place for him. There were already numerous people in the home or on the property to help and assist the teenage parents, but it seems no one was watching. That's an awful lot of injuries that happened in 7 short weeks.
