Interview with FLDS Women On Greta's Show

OMG, either I am hearing things, or the women who were being interviewed might have had transmitters on them being told what to say. I could hear a woman's voice during the fragmented sentences. The women keep stopping in the middle of sentences as if they are gathering their thoughts. But I swear I could hear a womans voice during those pauses. After one question , "Do you know of anyone being pregnant at the age of 15 or 16?", I could hear the voice plainly say, "NO."

Anyone else watch this and hear it?

That would be strange. I didn't watch it, but how could the answer possibly be "No" anyway?

She was asked "Do you know of anyone.... the voice said "no" but she answered about her own family instead. She clearly struggled with the answer.

Maybe I was hearing things or another channel was bleeding in?

It was feedback, there is a delay, between New York(?) and Eldorado...what you were hearing was part of Greta's question.
That is why they kept interrupting each other and then pausing.

Ha ha ha ha, no you are not going nuts. You could hear parts of her questions, when no one was talking. I heard it too, thinking WTH... but the next time they both were quiet it was Greta's voice. More than likely it was one of the womens microphones picking it up off her ear piece that she was listening to Greta with.

The thing that really bothered me about the 3 different interviews I watched tonight.

They would not answer the questions: What is your last name? Where is your husband? Did you see or do you know of any girls under the age of 16yo that are married or pregnant?

Ok the last one...you don't want to jeopardize your case...the first two questions...please!

Does it really matter what their last names are or where hubby is?

That 3rd question is different.

They forgot what the men told them.
Tomorrow should be interesting. Do you think the judge will demand DNA tests and there will be a DR. and nurse to take swabs or blood samples right there?

He was baffled.

Not quite as baffled as AC was tho when that woman compared their plight to Jews and the Holocaust. That was truly embarrassing for her. As she sat there and tried to explain to him she had a degree, in History.
That was last night on AC. The transcript is prolly online.

I blogged on that on one of these threads. I wished that Cooper had informed her what the concentration camps were really about and then ask her again if that what it was like when she was with CPS. I would have loved to hear her answer then. With her college degree and all.

I have no idea tomorrow could last several days...I can't imagine what tomorrow will be like. Organized chaos? I'm sure it won't be that bad, but I bet the Judge will try to stick pretty close to the schedule.
They need a smiley with a clock on here.

Okay, Carol, I just watched Greta. What you heard was Greta's voice on delay. The "no" you heard was "know". Sorry.

I also watched Greta, Anderson and Larry. They basically posed the same questions and all tried to get something from "have you seen any underaged girls pregnant . . . or married . . . etc." The women seemed uncomfortable with the questions and all went for the usual CYA response "not that I know of", "not that I'm aware of", "not that I've seen". Which is pretty much code for "yes, but you can't prove I knew." Seems that they're already preparing their defense - "I didn't know."

The manner in which they responded is equally interesting. When asked if they knew of marriages between young girls and older men, the response was a cautious, slow, "I've not seen it." When they were asked if they'd seen young girls having sex with older men, they responded very quickly and emphatically "NO". No need for hedging there because that would probably be the truth. (Perhaps their marriage ceremony takes place with only males present and, I shudder to think, the men also witness the consumation on that marital bed in the temple. Therefore, "Not that I've seen" would be accurate. )

When Larry King asked where their husbands were, they skirted the question. But later Marilyn chose to answer. However, she referred not to her "husband" but rather "her daughter's father". I think many of these women are not going to say they are married.

The women are adamant that there is no abuse at the compound. But, wait. Let's define abuse. If they don't think marrying off 14 year olds is wrong, then it's not abuse to their way of thinking, is it? I wish the interviewers would clarify this point.

The visit to the house was disturbing. No toys, no personal items, no kids art on the fridge. The only pictures in the house were of Warren Jeffs and, presumably other FLDS leaders, sometimes several in a single room. The house (no, it wasn't a home) was very cold and institutional. No personal expression whatsoever. The living room was set up like a seminar. So there you have it: bedrooms devoid of anything but beds, a living room that appears to be more of a classroom, no swing sets outside. Just where do these kids play? And with what?

Interesting that Marilyn's mother lives in the house with them. Hmmmm. Is she also a sister-wife?

I'm not surprised, actually, that the women fear their children are learning about sex from the questioning they're receiving. According to the young lady involved in the Warren Jeffs case she was married off without having had any instruction whatsoever and was horrified when her new husband attempted to have sex with her. Apparently, the children are totally unaware of sex until the day they marry.

The sterile environment really bothers me. The boys are, it seems, trained as construction workers, regardless of their natural talents or interest. The girls, likewise, appear to be trained for nothing more than motherhood and housekeeping. Among a population this large there should be budding artists, writers, musicians, scientists, athletes . . . and yet there appears to be no opportunity for any of this - for either the children or the mothers.

And the women. What DO they do all day? Cleaning a house that is so empty can't take long, especially with four sister wives. Are their days spent receiving lessons? Being propagandized to? This is scary.

Lotty if you are EVER questioned by police , whatever you do, do NOT talk to the cops.

Ask for a lawyer and for questions to stop until they get there.

Same with the ladies here.

What would the cops do if they said a 15yr old had a kid 4 years ago?
Take the kid?? Arrest his father?? Arrest the mother?

Well then the WHOLE STATE of Texas was guilty up till 3 years ago.

So it was ok for 14yr olds to marry in Texas up to 2004, but then after the law was changed in 2005, now they are going to prosecute people.

Gee lets make more criminals!

NO WONDER 1 out of every 100 people are in prison in the US.

I don't believe they'll make the law retroactive. I'm sure they'll find several underage who have married since 2004.

My point was that the women insist there IS no abuse. Meaning now. Meaning no abuse according to their definition of abuse. I hope the interviewers will not accept "no abuse" and insist on a specific response that addresses underage marriage since I believe they don't consider marrying at 15 and subsequently having sex at 15 is abuse.

I was just reading in the "Link" thread that several of the younger children don't have parents at the compound. This'll be interesting if somebody is collecting welfare by claiming them.

I don't consider it 'abuse' either. It was legal for 100+ years...but NOW its abuse!?!?!
Take a close look at OUR society and the young kids having kids....heck our high school has a daycare center!!!

Now if they are saying that the minors are FORCED to marry, then I believe that would be abuse.

Do they have proof of that?
And if not, how far is CPS ready to go to try to prove such a thing?

I'm just saying this is gonna be a heck of a can of worms.
I know people just want to judge these people, take their kids and be done with it.
But we need to make sure of what we are doing....and from what I see the state is just steamrolling ahead with this.

But maybe at the trial today they will have more solid info......we'll see.....

Just to be a bit of a devil's advocate here.... the reason that there were no family pictures in the homes is because all of the pictures were seized; they were on the search warrant. The intention is to use them to try and establish relationships.
Other than that point, I do agree with you. The homes appear very sterile with no personality. Sort of like a cheap furnished apartment before someone has moved in. Sad to think that 400+ children lived there.

Thank you. That explains the pictures.

Isn't it disturbing that there is no room for personal expression at YFZ? No choice of hair style, clothing, home decoration. Nothing that distinguishes one from the other.

I did here a former FLDS member say that the women's hairstyle has a function: The higher the "swoop" on the front, the more righteous that woman. Closer to God or some such nonsense. I don't know how this designation works, however, since it seems each woman has the option to swoop up her hair as high as she able, which would make it a self-appointed righteousness - something I would think the cult (and yes I think it is a cult) would frown upon. Anyway, that's what this ex-FLDS couple said.

John, society until now has turned a blind eye. With possible exception to the State of Arizona's raid on Short Creek (now AKA Colorado City) back in the 1950's (I think 53). Some men went to prison for a short amount of time for polygamy, but then returned to their families.

Most of the US doesnt understand or know as much about the FDLS/UEP as I do, all's they know are that families are being separated, mothers and children ripped apart. So in the 50's when the raid on Short Creek happened, it became a PR nightmare for the officials in AZ who initiated it because the general public was sympathetic towards images such as these available here: http://extras.sltrib.com/specials/po...ek/Gallery.asp

the officials in Arizona were VOTED OUT of office after the Short Creek raid... men returned to their families, and society again turned a blind eye.

the legal age of consent to have sex should be 18 all around the USA.

Once the legal age was 14 (with both parental, AND a judge's consent - a rare thing). Once slavery was legal. Once it'd be OK to post a job and say it was only for a man to fill. Once it was against the law for a woman to drive without a man on a horse going in front to warn everyone. Lots of bad laws exist, lots of stupid things we used to do change all the time.

Not to the same degree, Freebird. The clothing was subdued and plain, but the girls had different hairstyles... and none of them had that shellshocked look I'm seeing on the faces of these women, although I'm willing to write some of that off to the recent shocks.

There are other differences, too. The Amish near where I grew up attended school along with the rest of us, until after the sixth grade, IIRC. They certainly interacted with us. They might not come over on Friday night to watch the ballgame, but they had their fresh veggie stands (which I REALLY miss). They were open to conversation with outsiders. And when a batch of tornadoes swept through the region, they were willing to lend a hand to help their neighbors rebuild.

Amish kids have toys - homemade and simple - but they have toys. The men and women choose their spouses - and they do so when they are both adults. The women are allowed to leave the Amish and their rules behind for awhile when adult, and choose whether or not to come back. Heck, they can do that at any time in their lives - they aren't locked into a compound they cannot leave. So many differences - not even close.

I still want to see an interviewer asking all these women how old they are, how old their oldest child is. More questions they'd likely have trouble answering. How old is their oldest child's child?

I agree with you. I really do.

But if we had that law, how 'enforceable' would it be??

And looking at the kids today, I'd like to plant a size ten right in the back of their pants. LoL

I wish every kid had a dad like Ward Cleaver.

But then you look around and see the reality of the mess of what we actually have. And its sad.

I agree and lots of bad laws STILL exist.

But what if the law raised the age of consent to 21.

If a girl ends up pregnant at 18, what is our reaction going to be then??

I think its gettin too nice out to be up here with the computer.....see ya folks....

What's your point? These people aren't being investigated for their attire, nor for their lack of freedom of expression. They're being investigated for child abuse.

The near total lack of any freedom or expression - but more so, the lack of any toys or anything for children beyond a scant minimum - is merely a point for conversation, one more sign of the sad lives inflicted on these children and everyone in the cult. And it's miles beyond where the Amish choose to live.
