Items Still Missing From Somer Thompson
"ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- An episode of "America's Most Wanted" that aired Saturday night revealed two missing items Somer Thompson may have had on her the day she disappeared.
An artist's rendering of the items was released by police.
One is a tote-style bag 7-year-old used to carry her books and the other is a zippered, round lunch box with a pink pig design. Neither of these items have been recovered by investigators involved in the case.
Witnesses believe Somer had these two items with her when she was last seen walking home from school."

I still remember how Joseph Smith drove some 350 miles on the borrowed car he used to abduct Carlie Brucia with. While he dumped her body close to home, he traveled far, tossing her book bag and belongings into several dumpsters.
This could be what Somer's killer did as well.
I didn't watch the AMW show lastnight but I'm glad to see some 'new' information on the case being released.

Thank you for posting this, and thank God this guy is in prison.
My opinion is that they released this lame tidbit just to keep this story in the media. Obviously to me who is going to pay any attention to a backpack and a lunch box especially if they didn't find it in the garbage with her? We can deduce that these items most likely were sent along in the garbage with her and if not and they are being kept as souvenirs by her killer then when they are found they will be WITH the person they are looking for.
They need to release better information. How about starting with where they think she was initially dumped? For one thing that alone would make the killer more uncomfortable because it would be revealing something very personal and for another someone in the area she was dumped may indeed then remember something.
I realize LE is trained to do these things but considering how these cases go cold I question their methods sometimes.

Good point. I too think it's possible the perp couldn't put Somer's body in his vehicle and dump her elsewhere so he used what was most convenient, but the book & lunch bags could've been tossed practically anywhere. Maybe even in trash from that area but not in the same container as Somer. It's too bad this information wasn't released sooner. If the items have been discarded in garbage, they'll probably never be found. MOO

Remembering Somer
I'm surprised DT quit her job. I'm also surprised she rearranged the kids bedrooms so they won't have to sleep in a place that constantly reminds them of their sister.

Something else that surprised me and I don't understand...
Why would DT need her lawyer with her during this interview?

Wallie, thanks for the links. I don't know why she needs a lawyer. Maybe I missed something.

Neither of those things surprises me. Could you work, so soon after your daughter's murder, knowing that it happened while you were at work, knowing the killer was still out there, and you had other vulnerable children? I couldn't.
Making the children less aware of their missing sister isn't surprising either. A constant reminder is not helpful, especially at night when they can worry that it will happen to them. They are unlikely to forget their sister is missing no matter what, but she can minimize any trauma.
The lawyer, however, is surprising.

ITA except at the surprise re the lawyer
They aren't just for defendants An attorney can take over most of the "outside" things like requests for interviews etc., help guide her through the investigation, procedures, try to get answers for her. She also may be facing a custody battle, don't forget her ex husband said that he was going to take the kids and they would not live in Oak Park again. If that is the case then it would be important to have an attorney with her because some comments could be misconstrued by her ex's attorney.
There is no way i could go back to work if it was me at this point, she is going to be super protective over the rest of the children and she also probably still breaks down half of the day. Trying to stay strong for the kids and office probably is to much to expect.
Rearranging the rooms, now this is a smart mom. I think it is a great idea bc the kids are going to be so nervous themselves that someone will take them, and to have to pass Somer's empty room each time can be enough to make bedtime traumatic. Changing things around can help alleviate it a little bit. I do remember she said they were all going to get counselling and i am sure there was a child psychologist available at the school who she also might have gotten advice from
IMO

My bold above & copy below
Rearranged the kids bedrooms so they won't have to sleep in a place that constantly reminds them of their sister...I find that very "strange"!!!!
I also find it "strange" that Somers bookbag with the skeleton head and bone(s) along with her lunch bag with the pig on it were shown to the public as an artists rendition of a picture, instead of identical actual pictures of similar items from the companies who made them.
Also "strange" that Diena would have her lawyer at Fridays interview. Why would she need a lawyer?
I was hoping AMW would have given more information on how lil Somer died or if she was molested. LE generally at least gives the public a yes or no confirming or negating molestation...makes me wonder why there's NO confirmation here..."strange"
Gosh, I was really hoping there would be more information given to hopefully lead to a break in this case.

Bolding mine. Why is that strange? I see it as protecting her other children. It seems, to me at least, something a good mother might do. Am I missing something?

Your welcome Acey
Kelloggirl...I wasn't saying she should go back to work. I was hoping her employer would have told her to take as much time as she needed. I know some people even get a paid bereavement leave. It's too bad she had to quit, but I'm sure she'll be able to find something else when she's ready/able to go back to work.
I agree with you about rearranging things, but I was thinking Somer's room would become more of a shire than anything. It just seems so soon to rearrange things. Perhaps she shared a bedroom with her sister and she was having a hard time dealing with Somer's bed being empty, which I can totally understand. Whatever the reason, I'm sure DT is doing what she feels is best for her and her children.
Koawally...Who knows? Everything keeps changing, like Somer's hair. First it was reported as being in a ponytail with a red ribbon and now it's pigtails with pink ribbons.
Moonlite... greetings and your welcome. I believe there is her twin brother, 10 old sister and 13 year old half brother.
VC2, thanks for explaining the lawyer being there...now that makes sense!
By the way, WLK is due back in court tomorrow.

Bereavement leave, that's a laugh. Where I have worked as an RN, you could have 1 day for a distant relative and 2 days for an immediate relative. Isn't that special!?

In one of the latest news articles posted here it's reported that her backpack has never been found.

You mean the Hannah Montana one? That's odd since she was reported to only have the skulls tote bag and the piggy lunch bag with her.

Here's the pics of the bookbag and lunchbag. Hannah Montana does not make the items above and if they did I'm certain LE would have pictures of the items. Now on Somers missing person flyer it says she had a backpack. LE has not sent out any pics of the backpack.
I don't know what to think about this discrepancy...other than LE found the backpack and if they found it where did they find it. Was it found at home/on the street. Did lil Somer carry a backpack, bookbag and lunchbag? I've not seen LE revise the initial information Re:the backpack and as you can see the below the items do not include a backpack.
