You can see the scars and the missing hair up into the hair line extending onto the scalp and even on both sides down to where her temples are. She seems to have a scar on the outer edge of her left eyebrow. To me the photo looks touched up or maybe she has cosmetic makeup on to blend out the scars.
She seems to have some kind of protective plate on one side of her head sort of at the back. To the left back when looking at the photo. This is probably where they took part of the skull and then put it back when the swelling went down.

Hard to say from that low res picture. All I can make out is some sort of thin blue/white cloth cap covering the back of her head.
I'm glad they published this picture. I had been imagining a far worse outcome and this is a glimmer of hope for a normal life.

Attack-survivor is a little trooper
It is a wonderful article, but I do have a concern, which I am sure they have worked out, but the officers have remained in plain clothes all this time while with her, so as not to alarm her, how are they going to explain to her this badge, award and riding in the front seat of the police car without an explanation to her?

With her immediate family dead and extended kin rarely visiting
I wonder why extended kin rarely visited? That breaks my heart. Why isn't this little girl with family????

Not all of her immediate family is missing. Nicole is her half-sister, and altho she might not have been living in the same house, would still be immediate family. My siblings and I haven't lived in the same house for 40+ years, but they are still immediate family. That being said, Nicole is court ordered to not visit her.
That leaves the half-brother? Aunts and uncles. Perhaps no one is prepared to take care of a child with whatever problems her assault have left her with. They may love her, but not be able to provide for her.

Her story of survival warms my heart. She is one special little girl, I hope that she has the love and support to realize that.
God has special plans for her. May he continue to keep his watch over.

Doesn't she have grandparents too?
She is a special child. She has to be a little fighter to be able to come through this and still be able to smile.

She is just precious, clueless.
What a tough little spirit she must have.
I pray that she lives a wonderful happy life.
Her smile is captivating.
Happy Birthday Tabitha! I betcha you have a big party in store for you by those who love you and protect you now.

I wonder if Nicole is still not allowed to see her.

I did as was suggested about enlarging and I now have to agree with you that this is a current photo. How wonderful. This makes me so very happy. Like someone else said I had an awful visual and this gives me so much hope for a rewarding and love filled life.
God has some special plans for this precious little one.
I wonder if moving her out of the vicinity isn't to keep her out of the lime light and less chance of her finding out about anything since she has no memory of it now. It will be another prayer answered if she never remembers. Possibly after the trial is over and things have settled down, one of the family members may be able to take her. I would just hate to see her have to go through all that the rest of the family is going through right now, especially when she seems so very happy.
God Bless her

I'm just guessing...
I think LE would not permit her to because she is connected to Chris and it may cause immediate trauma to Tabitha.

just a thought here...with a foster family she can be a happy little girl, .......
it keeps her out of the media circus and to not to mention away from family, the talk, the pain and commotion of the trial……..a good place for her is away form all of this.

I would strongly recommend they place her up for adoption with a healthy wonderful family before arranging any foster care for Tabitha. (if that was ever considered)

…after reading the previous article about her which mentions that she is in the care of a foster family. It also mentions that the ones guarding her in the hospital, have a special bond with her.
My guess is…it is not just any foster family! And maybe temporary until the trial is over.

Hopefully the foster home she is placed in is an adoptive home. DCFS is probably making sure there is a smooth transition and allowing the foster parents to see how Tabitha fits into the family before the adoption takes place. DCFS would also have to make sure no appropriate relatives are available; relatives always have to be considered first. It would be terrible if she was adopted and then some long lost uncle came out of the woodwork... I would hope by now the child welfare officials have worked this out and Tabitha will soon join this family permanently.
Happy birthday, little one.
