View Full Version : In Praise of Prell

I've rediscovered Prell, the hard stuff. It wasn't readily available for awhile, but now stores like Target and Walmart carry it. I bought a bottle for the nostalgia, but dang, this stuff really does lather and cleans the gunk out. Smells like the 60s too! If you have oily hair, you may want to give the long forgotten Prell another shot. I can't remember when my hair has been so clean.

I remember Prell was really good at washing out hair color if you messed up LOL That's some potent stuff right there!
I Love Flex Balsam and Protein shampoo. The smell brings back memories. I've not seen it in a while. Wonder if they make it anymore?

Everyone always asks me what kind of shampoo I use because it smells so good and my hair looks great....the look on their face is priceless when I tell them Prell.
I was just thinking the other day how funny it was that I am beginning to find everything that is old so appealing...and its so affordable. Now, if I can only find Phisoderm again, I'll be a happy camper. Ohh, and Dristan as well...nothing has ever worked as well as that did...

I bought mine at Target for $2.50. I saw it at Walmart for even less. Haven't seen it at the dollar stores around here. Was Lemon Up for oily hair? That's what I have and Prell really zaps the oil. Doesn't take much for a huge lather.

It does clean really really good, but its very harsh and it lifts color on color treated hair. I used to like the smell though.

Never wore patchouli oil but this brought back a hillarious memory for me. My dad was LE all our lives, and one year for Christmas Grandma gave us all Patchouli oil bath oil. Well needless to say when bath time came around and Dad smelled that all the bottles disappeared. Grandma didn't know and we were to young to know what that was all about. I have a huge smile on my face right now! I used to LOVE Prell and then they stopped selling it in Canada in the 70s. Whenever I'd go over the border, I'd buy like ten bottles of it and people would wonder what on earth I was doing. LOL

Watch how emotional you might get over some long lost memory, Moon! One of the department stores was doing a product demo hsere one weekend and one of the products was Old Spice aftershave which my Dad always wore.
I took the cap off the bottle, took and whiff and burst into tears right on the spot. The poor little chickie behind the counter just didn't know what to say, and I apologized and got the heck out of there in a big hurry. Scents can certainly stir up long lost emotion.

Procter and Gamble made it, and probably still does. You know the company that makes Tide, Cheer or one of those detergents. What does that tell ya??

Actually, the product has changed hands several times and now belongs to a corp called "Ultimark". The formula appears to have stayed the same as "Classic Prell".
One can order on-line from Walgreen's, $2.99 for a 13.5oz bottle.

It will strip haircolor, so if someone has colored thei rhair and likes it, they would do well NOT to use it.
Also, Prell is very drying after prolonged use unless you dump a ton of conditioner on your hair afterwards, which leads me to; why use a shampoo like that in the first place?
Well, I used Prell for years and whenever I used it my hair was full of body and it was lovely. Obviously a different experience than yours.

Was it the answer to getting brylcream (sp?) out of your hair maybe or dippity do? Was it the answer to getting brylcream (sp?) out of your hair maybe or dippity do? I spent many a night at the kitchen table having my head completely covered in bobby pins to hold in the tiny curls made with dippity do if that was available, so I would have Shirly T., curls the next day for school, Mom's choice not mine LOL, you have to love Moms
Its amazing when I look back how I must have slept in them or hard plastic rollers when I was older. Remember trying to get brush rollers out!
LOL Brwds I'm sitting not 10 feet from a picture of James D., LOL, nice hair :)
I used to roll my hair every night and sleep in those hard curlers too. I used Dippity Do setting gel and it gave the curls a long life. lol
I would get up at 5, take my curlers out, spray the uncombed curls, let that dry, drink coffee, take comb and gently comb out curls, spray again.
Go put on makeup and style hair after putting clothes on. Spray again. :scared: My hair was real purdy and the style stayed in place all day. lol
Got to work at 8 so that was 3 hours preparation and travel time. lol

In the 80's we loved Purell and it was hard to find, so when we went to NYC on our honeymoon we bought about 5 bottles, made it to the border and asked what we had we mentioned Purell shampoo, he thought we had 5 bottles of champagne, over the limit for taking across the boarder so they asked us to drive over for an inspection. Well the guard laughed that we were bringing shampoo over during our honeymoon trip.

A flashback :
LINK (http://www.stuckinthe70s.com/products.htm)Oh, the memories. I just started reading this thread, but something I haven't seen so far is Halo shampoo. It was what I used to assert my independence from the Prell that my mother used on me from early childhood.
Prell was THE shampoo just like Ivory was THE soap at my house when I was little.
When I was pre-teen, the conditioner that was heavily advertised in the girl teen magazines was Long n Silky. It was pretty good stuff.
I'm going to go on a mission to find a bottle of Prell. I think it will be my fountain of youth.
Scampi

In my youth I used the green Prell all the time, it was industrial strength, that's for sure.
Mary Martin once said when she was on Broadway in South Pacific and sang the number "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair" while actually washing her hair on stage, Prell was the shampoo she used.

The new trend for the Harley crowd in my area is ape hanger handlebars. They can get ridiculously high but I guess it's all legal.
****************************************
They are legal up until the point the top bend in the bars do not exceed shoulder height.

Speaking of shoes.....
if you were a girl teen in the late 70's,
I bet you wore Famolares.
I had more than one pair,I'll admit.
My favorite shoes were my clogs.
Dang,I wish I still had those.

As long as we are discussing fashion,I had a pair of THE widest bell bottoms, hip huggers no less,
dark green and gold checks and I thought I was BIG TIME rofl!
Wish I still had 'em (wish I could still fit in 'em!!!!)

Did the Dr. Scholl's too! (I also had the John Lennon wire rimmed "granny glasses" and the long, long, parted in the middle straight hair and wore peasant tops or halter tops every day.) Hubby said his first impression of me was that I had sexy knees, because the knees of my jeans were completely gone (and they were worn that way, not bought that way like the young'uns do now.)

IIRC, we got our sandals from Pier One here. There was a local "head shop" that sold them but they were cheaper at Pier One. I remember my father was really happy for me to wear bell-bottoms, because he wore them in the Navy and they took him back to *his* youth.
I remember hanging out at the head shop for hours at a time, looking at black light posters and albums and clothes. Those were the days, best I remember, lol.

Remember making leather "jewelry"-wristbands and keychains.
Stamping them with peace signs and flowers and zodiac signs then staining them. I believe that was junior high 4-H
Yep, peace signs and flowers were the Signs of the Times back in the 70's.
Remember that commercial with the indian watching folks polluting and the one tear falling down his face?
I bet most of us from that time remember that commercial and the Coke
"I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing" one. Amazing how those commercials influenced a whole generation of people. Lol,my husband and I can both recite the Big Mac recipe ("Two all beef patties,lettuce,cheese....")!
Oh,and who can't recite the Preamble to the Constitution all because of Schoolhouse Rock????

No one could harsh my mellow, lol.
We were far less materialistic! Gosh, I rode my bike *everywhere* and ate whole wheat spaghetti with wheat germ and soy sauce and sauteed veggies for half my meals, lol. Happy as a pig in slop. When my first was born, we didn't have the money for a baby mobile for his crib and I used some mountain climbing cord to string up alfalfa sprout lids (they were colorful) and shiny kitchen utensils above his crib. (He's a FABULOUS cook, BTW.)
ETA: My younger kids would be scandalized over such make-shift toys, lol.

also, we had to fade our own Levi's! none of this pre-wash stuff. i remember washing them over and over again in the washing machine with bleach (didn't even own a clothes dryer). also remember wearing them while sitting in a bath tub to shrink them to the perfect fit!! in those days (1970s) we had to buy them larger than what we wore coz they always shrunk. and if we grew taller, or they shrunk at the bottom, (or wearing hand-me-downs!) sewing "borders" on the bottom hem! now THOSE were cool.

Isn't it tiring to have your hands in the air on long drives? Of course I had ape handlebars and a sissy-bar on my banana seat Shwinn in the mid-sixties so I can understand the cool factor, lol.

Oh yes sunbunny! I remember all those things very well.
The big thing here when I was a teen was to wear Lee jeans with the huge patch on the back of them. They didn't make girls jeans so we had to alter them at the waistline and they did NOT fit well. But they were OH so cool.
I laugh at my teens today with some of the things they wear, but when I look back at some of my pics as a teen I really have no right to laugh at anyone!

Uhhh.. okay, I'm giving up on the Prell. It does lather up, cleans and rinses out well, but the smell was doing me in. IMO it ends up stinking like bug spray. I guess I don't like that "60s smell" as much as I thought I would!
