The Pope has had body guards, the Swiss Guard, for hundreds of years. Their uniforms were designed by Michelangelo. :)

Didnt someone try to assassinate a pope a while back? Im not catholic, so dont follow the pope in general, but I thought one of them was shot or something?

Yes, Pope John Paul II was shot at 4 times in 1981. I found the link below with info.
