Thank you for the link.

I'm surprised that the LA Times used the word "Released." That is really unbelievable.

PS was not "released" from prison - he was on a dentist visit and was still in the care, custody and control of the Department of Correction.

imo

What next, a nose job or a peck lift.
Hard to believe but anything is possible if you have big bucks.:sneaky:

Actually they have a policy, if you can afford the treatment and pay for it up front, as well as pay for the transportation to and from for Dr and Dentist, then you can do it.

He was not released, I agree...he was on a health care visit that he paid for, the state did not pay out a dime for this.

PS still feels the need to care for his teeth, so he must feel he is getting out one day.

I hope he suffered from that tooth ache dearly, if he had one...

Gee, I wonder if all the inmates in that prison get to go to the dentist of their choice?

Also, I wonder if they can go to the doctor, barber, etc of their choice?

Maybe this policy includes getting the hamburger of your choice--McDonald's, Whopper, etc.

I hope you are right about this, because if he did not pay for the expense of the guards who went with him, the state shelled out a bundle.

The radio said he was at the dentist for a cleaning.

The radio said he was at the dentist for a cleaning.

So why can't he see the prison dentist like everybody else? Just because he could pay for transportation, guards, and whatnot means he can leave the prison for appointments? If this is their policy, what if somebody like Manson had a lot of money too?? :scared: MOO

The prison dentist doesn't accept credit cards?

 maybe that's it!! Seriously I just can't see anybody getting preferential treatment in prison because they have money. I'm sure Lana would've loved it if she could still be seeing her dentist...

huh???I hope thats not really true. If so, definately preferential treatment.
The jail I worked in had a visiting dentist. He came once a month and then barber chair doubled as a dentist chair. I never knew anyone to be sent out unless it was dental emergency, and then they went under guard to the emergency room. There was MOST DEFINATELY no cleanings done either.
Even if the prisioner had $$ and paid 'privately' for a dental visit to his dentist of choice (which I find:w00t:shocking) it costs $$ for the state to pay for the extra CO's that accompany him, etc. So thats why if he did really go for a cleaning, its BS and taxpayers should be incensed.

The article said Phil had to pay for all the costs associated with his visit to the dentist. Evidently any prisoner is allowed to do it provided they can pay for the transportation and security.

Exactly right so no need for people to get up in arms about paying for it from their hard earned tax. Relax...........

Even in prison there seems to be one rule for the rich and one for the poor - that may be the reason for the annoyance - added to the fact that he has a civil case wherein it is hoped he shall lose any remaining funds he has to Lana's family

Even in prison there seems to be one rule for the rich and one for the poor ... <snip>

Actually, it appears there is a single rule that applies - if you can afford it and pay for it then you get it.

Not commenting on if it is fair or not, just that there isn't an example of "two different rules" here; just an example of the single rule.

If Phil Spector goes to the dentist on his own money, that's got to be the least newsworthy event of 2009.

Yes, one rule for all, so it can't be fairer than that can it. Moving on......

I would have to disagree with your (and Martek's) "one rule for ALL" assessment of Phil's (and other inmates with money) ability to seek services from an outside dentist and leaving prison in order to do so.

Just because the "rule" says ANYONE that can afford it, can leave prison and have their teeth cleaned every 6 months by a personal dentist - doesn't mean that it is "ONE RULE FOR ALL". And that it "CAN'T BE ANY FAIRER THAN THAT". It is NOT one rule for ALL. It is ONE RULE for ONE SET OF PEOPLE (the wealthy) and ONE RULE for ANOTHER SET OF PEOPLE (the poor). If it were actually ONE RULE FOR ALL - - it would be EQUAL and everyone would have the same opportunity of achieving it. And it could then be called "fair".

And if you think MONEY is a fair way of handing out "privileges" IN PRISON, why not add to that list of "rules". How about . . .

IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, you DON'T even have to stay in prison, in a tiny little cell, eating crappy food. IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, AND CAN AFFORD ROUND-THE-CLOCK, PRIVATE SECURITY GUARDS, ETC . . . THEN YOU CAN BE CONFINED TO YOUR OWN HOME, INSTEAD OF HAVING TO SPEND THE NEXT 19 YEARS TO LIFE IN PRISON for MURDERING a woman.

How about this . . . IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT - A PRIVATE CHEF WILL COOK ALL YOUR MEALS.

Or . . . IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, YOU CAN HAVE A SLEW OF EXTRA PRIVILEGES INSIDE PRISON AS WELL - LIKE JOBS BEING ASSIGNED TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER, SATELLITE TV WITH HBO IN YOUR CELL - IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT (please tell me this doesn't already exist).

How about . . . IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT, a trip to an outside, private hair dresser/barber every 6 weeks. No cost to the state or government because hey - you're paying for the transportation, hair cut bill & the security - all with your own funds. So why not, you're allowed haircuts inside prison.

The possibilities seem limitless. I thought the whole purpose of being SENTENCED to 19 years-to-life in prison meant you COULDN'T LEAVE. No "outings" or trips to the dentist for a 6 month check up & teeth cleaning OR a trip to a private practice doctor for your yearly physical or to have your blood pressure checked. NOPE - I thought those lost PRIVILAGES were all part of the whole, "go-to-jail" package - referred to as a "sentence", and meant to serve as both a PUNISHMENT and deterrent. He is NOT serving a few years for grand theft or tax evasion . . . he MURDERED a PERSON. He (and others in his position) should NOT BE ALLOWED TO LEAVE . . . .JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE WEALTHY. That is simply 2 sets of rules. (1) for those with money and (1) for everybody else. ONCE IN PRISON - $$$ is the LAST THING you want entered into the equation. And if there's going to be 2 SETS of RULES - let it be: (1) set for inmates serving a few years for smaller crimes AND (1) set of rules for inmates that have committed much more horrible crimes LIKE MURDER. And those rules would include NOT BEING ALLOWED TO LEAVE TO HAVE THEIR TEETH CLEANED, regardless of how much money they had when they were convicted of MURDER.

I had no idea this was on here. I had considered putting this story on the celebrity forum on here. I seen the Phil dentist story about an hour after it hit the twitter waves!

I thought it was an interesting story because I didn't know prisoners could do that.

I thought gee if I was in that position and had that kind of money well I might have to visit the doctor or dentist more often! I wonder if his wife had an appointment also that day.

A slight over exaggeration on your part in my opinion. We are talking about Dentist visits; NOT hairdresser appointments; private Chef's, etc, etc. Its no different on the outside if you can't afford it, you don't have it, simple as that.

I have been at the Doctor's office on several occasions and have seen prisoners in shackles with guards so it is not as unusual as one may think.
