Score one for the United States!
First Lady Michelle Obama landed the top spot on French Elle's annual best-dressed list, beating out France's own First Lady in the 'Political Chic' category.

Yes,even in proper style and social grace, we are regaining what we have lost.

In all my years, I have never known a finer dressed and more impressive looking First Lady. snipped.
Me, either.
No wonder people the world over love and respect her.

Nice news, I've always thought she dressed classically stylish and with good use of bright colors.

When it comes to "proper style and social grace", what was lost and who's responsible?
Good question. Personally, I can't think of a first lady who didn't possess some style and grace. Even Hillary Clinton did just fine in this regard imo.
There is an implication here that our previous first lady didn't have these qualities, which I very much disagree with! Laura Bush was a wonderful first lady.
Michelle Obama is doing things her way. I don't find it any more impressive than we have had in the past.

Michelle Obama has more class in her little toenails than Carla Bruni has in her whole body, and then some.

I was wondering the same thing. Laura, Hilary, Barbara, those before them didn't have "proper style" ("proper" to whom? What is "proper" style? Is there a guide somewhere?) and "social grace"? From reading this thread, you would think all of the previous First Ladies were Neanderthals. Very odd. IMO.

Bright colors makes me think of how she dresses the girls, too. I loved their Inauguration Day outfits.
The First Lady is indeed a style icon. I love a lot of what she's worn, but her Inauguration Day outfit and the State Dinner dress...simply gorgeous.

When the topic of the thread is Michelle O being on the "best dressed" list, it is kind of hard not to discuss her looks, doncha think?

What do clothes have to do with her beauty or lack thereof?
See the Op. That is what it is about. Best dressed, ie. her clothes.

This is so true. Why keep making threads about a controversial topic, expecting others to fawn, when there clearly is another opinion out there?

My comments were not insulting, if you can't tell the difference perhaps you should leave the moderating to the moderators.
Your comments were very respectful and well worded. This attempt to quash any opinion in opposition is not productive.
imo
Calling someone 'ugly' is respectful?? Sorry, I do mind, good bye.
PS: What do you look like??
Thank you! ITA:thumbup:
I have seen Mrs. Obama in some lovely ensembles, but also have seen her in awful clothes. Her stylist and/or choices are inconsistent IMO.

After posting my happy opinion about MO being on Elle's best dressed list I stayed away. But I thought I would add a thought. We've been very lucky in this country to have some fine first ladies. I loved the fact that Lady Bird chose to beautify the country and that Laura Bush pushed books and reading. I can't think of one that has disgraced us. IMO they have been good at their unpaid job and done it with dignity.
It's wonderful that we now have a stylist first lady, but that doesn't detract from the good jobs that other first ladies have done and praising her doesn't put down the other good women.
I think we are very lucky and we should count our blessings rather then snipe at each other.

I agree.
Michelle Obama is simply beautiful, inside and out!
She has impeccable posture, gorgeously glowing skin, chiseled bone structure (much to do with her own attention to those details during workouts), and overall, she is one of THE most statuesque First Lady's of all time.
She also, (with the help of Barack, of course), produces absolutely beautiful children!

Hear, hear. I especially agree that praising one specific first lady, in this case Michelle Obama, does not equate to a condemnation of any other. Each one possessed and brought a unique compilation of
attributes to the White House.

I looked at everyone of these pics and Michelle Obama looks very nice in every piece of clothing she wore.
In fact, Michelle Obama could throw on a sack from Miller's tent and awning and she would look marvelous.
Michelle Obama is tall, lean and all legs. Something I wish I possessed.:blushing::laugh:

She appears to be high-waisted, so you end up not being quite sure if the belt was intended to be at waist level or empire level. My DD has the same problem, and I always ask her where she THINKS she's wearing her belt. It ends up being one or the other, but a lot of times I can't tell. Most of the outfits are delicious (except the orange one). Who is the designer that adds the bow along the neckline? I saw that in several pictures, and wish we knew who the designers were.

julie .... I haven't looked at all the pictures yet, but the ones I did see mention the designer.
Thanks lady for posting that ....
jmo
Ahhh, thanks. Not all of them tell who the designer is (on the right of the screen for all the others out there brain dead like me), but I did see that the bow on the side of the neckline was done by more than one designer. I guess I need to get a bow on the side of my neckline of my sweatshirt, so I'll be in step with the fashionistas

She wears the belt where the designer intended it to be worn, and She is not high-waisted. Very few individuals are. The style of the dress sf all the rage right now, and it looks great on her. Few can wear that style as many do not possess her stunning figure. mo
I believe Ms. Obama's figure may be described as pear shaped. Small at the top and large at the bottom and many of the outfits she wears emphasises that. See photo #23. MO

(snip) and She is not high-waisted. Very few individuals are.
Do you have a link to prove that 'very few individuals are high waisted' as you claim? I'm high waisted, and know others who have this (IMO) unfortunate fashion challenge. I had no idea that we are in the minority, as there are so many millions of various body types out there. Where did you get that fact? TIA.
