Accused murderer had violent past

Friends of Helen Buchel couldn’t understand what attracted her to John Brown, the man charged with murder in the deaths of Buchel and her 12-year-old daughter.

“He seemed sneaky, and I knew he had a violent past,” said Kim Cascio — a childhood friend of Ms. Buchel’s — before Brown’s hearing Monday in Geneva City Court.

Brown, 35, of Manchester, was charged Friday with first-degree murder and a parole violation after the bodies of Ms. Buchel, 34, and her daughter, Brittany Passalacqua, were discovered in their upstairs apartment at 148 N. Main St. in Geneva.

One of the ways that parents can protect their children is to be hyper-vigilant about who they introduce into their child's life.
For a few bucks, we can get background checks on a new BF or GF. In this case, Helen Buchel even knew that Brown was a convicted felon, fresh out of prison, but she apparently chose to believe his song & dance routine, at least until recently.

Helen Buchel leaves behind a 15 yr. old son, who spent half-time with her and half-time with his father. My heart aches for this boy, who discovered the bodies.

I certainly hope that this time he has NO parole. I see the neighbor says he started hanging around after Ms Buchl was injured in a 2 car crash. Hmmm....perhaps it was because she would be coming into some insurance or perhaps a settlement, if she was not @ fault in the crash? Or, I guess we could assume he was there to "help" her after she was severely injured? And, maybe he did think he would help her, but betcha he was looking more to help himself if she was to get any sort of monetary settlement.

I absolutely 100% agree with you about background checks. I ran one on a guy one of my friends was dating recently. I think they're mandatory when bringing someone into your life, especially if you have children. But as you said, this lady knew and still went out with him. It's very unfortunate for the child - 15 years old is WAY too young to die.. very sad.

Nowadays I think it is a good idea if both men and women pull background checks on someone they are planning to have a deep meaningful relationship with whether there are children involved or not.

imo

We all know some people can seem "normal" and then go off unexpectedly. His past history would have been the only tip-off. I'm glad the son wasn't home or there might be three dead. JMO
