I've pre-ordered Stephen Kiing's new book. It is due for download on December 24th. I've marked my calendar to turn on the Kindle for download, but I'm curious.
When the book is ready for download, will they notify me? By e-mail? On my Amazon account? Can they notify me if my Kindle is shut off?

Hello Moondance,.. Dont you just love your Kindle? I used to go on vacation and take a ton of books. and since we have to pay extra for weight i'm so glad to have my Kindle. I've named my Kindle....Her name is Kristie Kindle and she's my best buddy LOL.
I love how you can look things up and i love reading the newspaper on her...I honestly feel like in the next ten years high schools and colleges will start putting text books on something like a Kindle. Will save on paper and back problems in our young adults.
My son bought a Sony Reader and took it back after two days and got a Kindle.

Oh yes, a lot of books. But I've never pre-ordered so I wondered if they had a way to remind you to turn on the net so it could download. However, I won't forget. I love SK and reviews say this book equals The Stand.

I have a Kindle app on my iPod touch. So, I don't need the Kindle, per se.

hi justice yes i do love it and the thing i like best is that amazon will send you the first three chapters free and then if you like the author s style you can order it. i like the one click ordering too. but many books are not on kindle like the new book mommy s little girl and many others. my kindle is the only way i can read a book because i can t see books any longer so i make the font big and fewer words on the page and i can read a book again000 one thing i wish for is a back light. happy reading!

what happens if kindle goes out of business, do we lose access to all the e-books we bought due to the DRM? seems to me a e-book would only be good as long as the company you bought it from was still in business

I did find this page for sharing your ebooks with family and friends like you would a real book
http://www.ehow.com/how_5555987_share-books-between-kindle-accounts.html
that is a plus for them, at least you can share with those you trust like family

I really like the idea of e-books, the only issue I have is that if I say spend thousands on e-books for the kindle, I can't later decide to go to the sony e-book without having to re-buy all my e-books as the kindle e-books will not play on sony and visa versa

But here is an article (with some good comments) that might make you feel less concerned:

I am in love with my kindle. I've even downloaded the i phone kindle app and the kindle for pc app so if I forget my kindle at home and I'm sitting in a doctor's office, I can still whip out my phone and keep reading.
I will say the one downfall I've found is that having my credit card info on file at Amazon has made it far too easy to buy new books and I hate to even see my credit card statement. On the other hand, when dh is stumped at christmastime, he can give me a $100 amazon gift cert and I'm able to get 10 new releases!!!! Woo-hoo!!!
BTW, I took my kindle on a seven day cruise and bought four new titles before I left. Didn't weigh down my luggage like four hard-bound books would have. Just tossed the kindle in my handbag and I was off! LOVE THE DARN THING. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT.

much different, if you buy $10,000 worth of e-books, and the company goes under, you lose that $10,000 worth of e-books and have to re-buy the entire library

were talking 5, 10, 20, 30 years from now, will all the books you bought go up in smoke - DRM only hurts the honest people, if they sold the e-books at a fraction of the cost of a real book that would be one thing, but that is not the case from what I have seen

I figure if it goes out of business after 5-30 years I will have gotten my money's worth out of my Kindle.
I don't keep books anyway.....even hard cover or paperback. I send them to a shelter.
I am not sure what DRM means??? But the books I have bought for my Kindle are much less than if you bought them at the store. Maybe I am not understanding your post Lisa????

OK, I have a question?
http://us.luciddeals.com/kindle
Is this the same thing or not? If so, WHY is it so much cheaper here? Is this a legit site? Anyone ever buy from this site before?
I am so confused!

It says 'HOT"
I hope people who own a Kindle will keep posting. My sis and I both have discussed it frequently and we are teetering on the edge.
Moonbeam, you said you wish it had a back light. Do you mean backlighting like on a computer screen? From the two comments on this article, I gathered not having that is a plus. Unless I don't understand what you mean. I've never actually seen a Kindle.

One thing that has kept me from getting one is that our area really isn't serviced by Sprint and my understanding is you need to be able to get a good connection. Is this correct?
TIA

Another red flag is they call it a "Kindle Slim". I've never heard of a model called that.
I adore my Kindle- And at the time I bought it, I was working at a bookstore!
I can read a lot faster on the Kindle- just one of the things I love about it. LOL about loving Kindle more than dishwasher. I'm with you on that.
Uh...have the two of you who said you'd give up the dishwasher first ever had to live without? :scared: (And not used disposable stuff in place of glass and plateware?)
With children? And during the holidays with loads of company in and out?
I had to wait a loooooong time for my first dishwasher and I'd give up the husband before I'd give up the dishwasher. My motto" If it physically will fit, in it goes!

some of my Amazon video's I bought (not rented) no longer will download to my tivo as the DRM rules have changed by the author, has anyone had this happen with kindle yet, where ebooks you bought no longer work anymore unless you re-buy them once again? this is one thing about buying DRM vs DRMless products, with DRM your rights to the content can be changed at ANY time
Butterfly Effect 2 is one movie this has happened too, I can download and watch my purchase on my PC, but I can no longer download it to my tivo... crazy

I am saying with DRM, you could buy the book today and lose the right to use the book tomorrow, I have lost the rights to download some of the movies I bought from amazon unbox already, that is crazy, I bought them, they need to get rid of DRM, so once you buy a book, it's yours to read on any device you wish

"Imagine if Tower Records sold you a CD, but then, a few months later, knocked on your door and replaced the CD with one that you can't play in your car. Would you still feel like you "owned" the CD? Not so much, eh? "
this is what DRM allows...
Thanks, Lisa, for the links. I've been doing a lot of reading about DRM because I am really interested in a Kindle.
There is much discussion in different places over DRM formats for books. Many, who seem to be knowledgeable, say the music industry has about ruined themselves because of DRM.
I have three different types of e-book readers downloaded on my computers (Adobe Reader, Kindle for PC and MS Reader). One computer is a Sony laptop and one is a Dell mini. The Dell is easier to read on because it is smaller and lighter. But I really would love a Kindle if it is true it is easier on the eyes.
One of my issues with all three readers are the formatting errors and no page numbers. I would probably be more forgiving if reading was easier on a computer.
How do you Kindle owners feel about books that have already come out in paperback still being sold for Kindle for $9.99? That's a big turnoff for me. I can buy them cheaper at a used book store. And on this issue, maybe I would feel differently if the Kindle was much cheaper.

Yes it's happened with the Kindle Lisa -
On Friday, it was “1984” and another Orwell book, “Animal Farm,” that were dropped down the memory hole — by Amazon.com.
In a move that angered customers and generated waves of online pique, Amazon remotely deleted some digital editions of the books from the Kindle devices of readers who had bought them.
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/18/technology/companies/18amazon.html
Amazon’s published terms of service agreement for the Kindle does not appear to give the company the right to delete purchases after they have been made. It says Amazon grants customers the right to keep a “permanent copy of the applicable digital content.”
Retailers of physical goods cannot, of course, force their way into a customer’s home to take back a purchase, no matter how bootlegged it turns out to be. Yet Amazon appears to maintain a unique tether to the digital content it sells for the Kindle.
Amazon effectively acknowledged that the deletions were a bad idea. “We are changing our systems so that in the future we will not remove books from customers’ devices in these circumstances,” Mr. Herdener said.
