Good food for thought. We seem to be heading this way and I hear more and more people starting to think that maybe socialism is okay. This article points out exactly why it does not work. There is no place for individualism in a socialist country. Once they start to socialize any part of it in a way where everyone MUST be involved or go the jail, we will are doomed.
Von Hayek accurately foretold the fate that would befall dissenters from the plan. They simply could not be allowed to get in the way. Opposition would soon be treated as subversion, with debate shriveling to non-existence under the glare of the state. Those who refused compliance would first be marginalized, then dehumanized, and finally (failing re-education) eliminated. Collectivism and individualism cannot long share the same bed. They are political oil and water, and neither can compromise its position without eventually succumbing to the other. The history of the twentieth century is littered with the remains of those who became "enemies of the state" for merely drawing attention to this flaw. As Von Hayek predicted, the socialist vision would not be achieved without bloodshed.

Gotta chuckle, when an article starts out by citing the political insight of one joe the plumber..........Wow, I thought 'they' were past that debacle.... Another tripe article. imo of course!
Obviously you didn't read the entire article and review of the history it points out. The person you mentioned was barely a side note and it didn't get into any political insight (your attempt to dismiss this as nonsense?), but a good example of how anyone opposing the current administration is demonized, but read on and really think about what has happened in every other socialist country. I take it you are all for socialism and the restraints it will have on our freedom?

Ah yes, americanthinker. I notice they couldn't resist mentioning Hitler in the article and Joe the Plumber gets mentioned.
One point they make is you need to study history. The author should take their own advice.

I did read it, hence the chuckling. The demonizing occurs on your end, not mine. I take it that you're all for rhetoric, and will use any amt of it to try and spin things in a direction to make our Fine President and the Administration look bad. Fishing only works, if something takes the BAIT:wink:
I think it's a good article and it reminds us of how socialist countries have always failed and points out some basic reasons why. Some posters here have gone back and forth from saying that this administration is not socialist to turning around and asking 'what's wrong with it, anyway?' I'm not fishing, btw, just trying to discuss things. If you think it's "bait", then why are you bothering to post on this thread? Just curious.

Yeah! Socialism is bad.
Bad that is, if it favors the American People, such as the Public Option and Social Security.
Not so bad if it is the American People who continue to bail out failed banks, insurers and other WALL STREET folks.
As long as we continue to pay for big bonuses and salaries of "the big guys" Socialism is good, even if it is called Capitalism.
Just My Humble Opinion

Excellent article and precisely why I fear for our country now. Socialism is a tried and failed idea imo.

One reason I stated the author should take his own advice and study history. And learn the facts. But as I said, it's americanthinker.

"The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money" - Margaret Thatcher.
Love this. Wise Lady, that Margaret Thatcher, someone who would definitely know more than anyone here!

Oh, I know. Very humiliating to write about something and totally have no idea what it is. :blushing:

Socialism fails because it rewards mediocrity and punishes success. If your policies make failure appealing, it is likely people won't work harder.
How wise, flare! Another reason Socialism cannot succeed after the initial attraction.
The BBM should be a quote!

Good read on Democratic socialism, there is more than one kind of "socialism," but of course the first one that comes to mind with the right uses it is communism.... not necessarily so.
