How warm or cold is it in NC at night at this time of the year?
Off Topic: Curtis Vance found guilty of murder.

I'm in the Charlotte area and it's been in the mid-upper 40s at night. Fayetteville is a little over 3 hrs. away.

(no surprise about Vance and thank goodness!!)

Hi, Pan! Do we know if it's a house, trailer or apartment complex yet?

Single-wide mobile home. It's in the video at this link.

http://www.wral.com/news/local/video/6397725/

Notice also the laundry hanging outside in the rain. I wonder if the blanket could've been on that clothes line before it ended up in the neighbor's trash?

Here is an aerial map of the mobile home park. There appears to be a lot of wooded area around, as well as a lake nearby. Wonder if searches have been done by the lake.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=embed&hl=en&geocode=&q=1116-A+Sleepy+Hollow+Drive,+fayetteville,+nc&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=53.345014,78.837891&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=1116+Sleepy+Hollow+Dr,+Fayetteville,+Cumberl and,+North+Carolina+28311&z=17&ll=35.101265,-78.921729

oops didn't see the previous post with aerial info.....though this google map shows the lake, by zooming out a bit.

Neighbors of missing 5-year-old knew little about family

In this article, it states that the mobile home park is near what appears to be a large dump site and is surrounded by woods.

Updated article ~

"Moore said she was awakened by noises outside her home at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

"It sounded like somebody was beating," she said.

She went back to sleep but was awakened later by police saying they were confiscating her trash can because it contained evidence in the disappearance of her young neighbor.

"Every time I think about it, it upsets me," she said. "The idea that this baby was missing is bad in itself, but actually feeling like I had something to do with it, that's pretty hard to deal with, this evidence being in my trash can."

Moore said she has no idea how the blanket got into her garbage can. She said police told her it was covered in feces and that feces were also found on the back porch of Davis' home."

Thanks, Lynn....Have you been watching Headline News? Getting lots of info since 5pm. Seems that the other woman has a child and she is the one who got her application accepted by that trailer park. Shaniya's mom put in an application but it was turned down.

They all moved in back in August. Shaniya and her mom, the friend and her two kids (one is an infant). The trailer park lady said that she didn't know where the infant came from since neither woman was pregnant when the applied to live there at that park. There was also a boyfriend and there were only two bedrooms for everyone. No wonder Shaniya had to sleep on the couch.

This will not end well :( sounds like terrible living conditions, dfs had been involved before, feces on the blanket and the back stairs/porch? I am wondering if that was bc she had died, all of us lose our waste when we die..or maybe a reason for frustration that caused something very bad to happen. I can see it on the blanket but the steps/porch (cant remember which) makes no sense to me

A blanket covered in feces? I hope this is due to there having been a "sewage problem" in that home and that the blanket was used to mop up. Would one use a blanket? Maybe. IMO, I don't think so.
Wondering if it's possible poor Shaniya had an accident and that she was punished.....

I'm just not connecting the blanket to the sewage problem, unless Shaniya took it to the bathroom with her and it got in the backed up toilet or something. Then I could see an irate adult punishing her. Or worse I could see Shaniya losing control if she was frightened or being beaten. That would explain why it ended up in the neighbor's trash ~ somebody didn't want it around the house. MOO

The mom was questioned all yesterday and evidently again today. No doubt she is being asked to offer an explanation about the blanket and what was going on at 3 am when the neighbour heard some kind of commotion. I hope the friend and boyfriend are being asked the same questions, separately. Would like to know what she/they are stating and whether the accounts jive and it makes sense. If not, I have a feeling that things are quickly going to unravel.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall to hear the possible explanations that might lead away from something happening to Shaniya inside the house. And about the sewage problem, I'd also like to know if anybody had complained to the landlord about it and how long it had been going on. I'm just not seeing renters ignoring something that huge if it had become a problem where one couldn't even use the toilet. MOO

There was that case in September where that little boy Wyatt was found in the Septic Tank, and the lid had been replaced. I'm guessing authorities would have checked that already though.

Also, IMO, if the feces covered blanket was from the septic issue, I don't see why it would have been thrown in the neighbors trash can.
And if the blanket and feces on the porch aren't connected to Shaniya's disappearance, I have a hard time believing it would be reported. It paints a pretty ugly picture for a reporter to make that mistake, IMO.

My heart is BROKEN for this little girl!!!!

I understood it to be before Shaniya's mother moved in. Apparently they've only been there since August & the incident was in July? I heard that too about the tapes. They can be seen outside the mobile home that morning "looking around". So if that tape is still around, also would be if anybody ever entered the home. I wonder what, if anything, is captured around 3am when the neighbor heard the "beating"? MOO

My worry is that the tapes maybe ran on a loop. Meaning that if they caught film of the family "looking around" at 6AMish, whatever happened earlier, might not be on the tapes.

You might be right. By the time LE even knew about video cameras something that happened around 3am could've been taped over. I think it would all depend on the equipment that the landlord installed. MOO

I did hear that too. She also was reported to have said she's tried for the past 4 yrs. to make the park a decent place to live. That's why I question this sewage problem and how long it's been going on. Maybe something just recent that the tenants created by stuffing the wrong things down the toilet. Or maybe something as simple as leakage under the toilet from it not being secured or a problem with the flooring. MOO

Reported that Barbara didn't know anything about the sewage problem, but who knows what's what.

ETA: Do we know if this MH Park is on the city sewer system or septic tanks? The MHs seem awfully close together for septic tanks, but I really don't know.

I tend to believe the landlord in this case. I'm also thinking it could be a problem that could be easily corrected but in order to protect the kids right now (while investigating Shaniya's disappearance) they used it as an excuse to say the house was uninhabitable. I'd also think it's a sewer system. MOO

Ok...A reporter for HLN Michelle Sigona interviewed the manager, Barbara Davenport, she oversees 98 units in the Sleepy Hollow neighborhood. Barbara says Antoinette Davis, Shaniya’s mother, applied to live in the mobile home park but Barbara says her application was denied. Only Antoinette and a 5-year-old boy were listed on the initial application. Barbara says BD, Antoinette’s sister, also put in an application at the same time application was accepted. That application only listed BD and her son as potential renters. It was quite a surprise for Barbara to later learn that in addition to BD and her son, Antoinette, her boyfriend, Antoinette’s 5-year-old son, Shaniya, and an infant were also living in the home. Barbara says she doesn’t know who the infant belongs to because at the time the women turned in their applications, neither one appeared to be pregnant. Michelle says more new updates soon....

OK. From what I've gathered over this loooooong day with these missing kids .... the dogs didn't pick up her scent leaving her residence. The dogs couldn't track her leaving, wandering around at 5:30 am to just before 7:00 am. Thus she never left her mobile home.

It doesn't say she was wandering around @ 5:30 am. That is the time the mother placed her on the couch. She could have left (by whatever means) as late as even 6:45, as it was 6:50 when the mom says she checked, and the girl wasn't on the couch.

IF Shaniya had left the MH (which LE doesn't agree with) then there would have been a scent to track at whatever time/some direction. The odd thing is the dogs picked up NO scent at all trailing off anywhere.

I had to take a phone call, so forced to only half listen. Was school even brought up? Whether or not she was in school on Monday is important. Who last saw the baby girl? The neighbor didn't even know she lived there.

Unless it's totally unrelated, but that would be too much of a coincidence, ...wouldn't it? Strange that they would make such a racket disposing of it. That garbage day was the day before also makes it more likely it would be found. I don't think this person/ people are too bright.

I'd assume that the park owners would back trailers up (you know, back to back for space). We lived in a single wide trailer when I was little, but for the life of me I cannot remember if there was a back door.

IF Shaniya had left the MH (which LE doesn't agree with) then there would have been a scent to track at whatever time/some direction. The odd thing is the dogs picked up NO scent at all trailing off anywhere.

"By whatever means"--such as being carried as was mentioned by other posters could possibly be why there was no scent. And, she DID leave the MH, she is not in it. The point was that she did not necessary leave the MH (being carried) @ 5:30, it could have been as late as 6:45, if the mother's version of events are truthful, that she placed her on the couch @ 5:30, and could not find her @ 6:50.

And why put her on the couch at 5:30am? To set up a staging?

I have not read whether any adult in that MH works--and I have not read anything that says they do not. IF mom works, and has to leave early, I can see putting the girl on the couch. My kids were removed from their cozy little beds by 5:30, 6am, placed on the couch while I got ready for work, in hopes that they were awake enough to put on clothes to be taken to day care.

Of course, there wasn't anything said about why she didn't check on the girl in the hour. And, it could very well be that the little girl had wet the bed or something, and mom put her out there, her place in the bed would be uncomfortable if wet.

And, there is always the possibility that something nefarious happened in that MH even prior to the 5:30am time, and that mom is not telling what really happened.

No. All public school systems must offer kindergarten, but children are not required to attend. Compulsory attendance applies to children between the ages of seven and sixteen and also children aged 5 or 6 as long as they are enrolled in public school.

It makes no difference what the mother says. The difference is no scent was found. Either badly trained dogs or she hadn't been outside for days and days. YES ... well trained SAR dogs would pick up scent of a person carried in arms. I've raised/trained 6 SAR dogs. My dog tracked people for miles and miles over mountains and streams in horrible terrain in Utah. Well trained dogs can track a person in a car. STARTS with a scent of the person. What was the scent item of Shaniya's given to the dogs? All those clothes on the line = freshly washed clothes.

Sounds like this child should have been at this home then, yet thus far no witnesses seeing her. Did Mom hide her because she wasn't listed on the lease? Wonder where they lived previous to that? Also wonder if the neighbors remember seeing this child before the family moved? Something sounds very wrong here.

Was wondering the same. Have no idea. I wonder why media mentioned that the "family" could not return because of the sewage backup. Would have assumed they'd be kept away because of the ongoing investigation. Just too strange...this!

IMO...either the sewage back up has something to do with her dissapearance, or she never lived there in the first place....and the missing child report was to cover up for a child who went missing before yesterday. Just thinking out loud.

We are on the same wavelenghth, Maya.

I have to keep in mind that oftentimes eary news reports in these type of cases are wrong. IMO

it is amazing the similarities to the HC case. Sad but True.

The neighbor said that the feces was all over the railing, the porch area and of course on this blanket. I don't know if they had scent dogs or cadaver dogs out there.

They better get to the dump pronto. This child is dead, and it looks/sounds like she suffered a horrendous attack.

IT IS a recurring theme. But the evidence in this case so far does lead me to believe it was a Sexual assault of great magnitude.

I wondered the same thing, but if you grab the nearest cloth in the bathroom, wouldn't it be a towel? Wouldn't a blanket be in a bedroom or on that couch?

I think this feces covered blanket etc and Shaniya's disappearance are related....too coincidental for me. I think something horrendous went on in that home that night.
I've had a backed up toilet and it sure didn't result in feces all over my railings and porch and whatnot.

Was it a sewage backup? or leaking sewage lines? Major difference between the two. If it was leaking lines, most of the sewage would be between the floors and underboards (can't think of what that's called at the moment). A backup would be easily fixed with a plunger or a snake. If it was leaks and had been going on for some time, that could leave a mess that could involve having to replace the flooring.

I think the main reason the media is saying that the family can't return due to the sewage problem rather than because it's a crime scene is simply the fact that it makes the family look even worse and, as we all know, bad news sells and if we don't like the people we're reading about, we are also apt to be more interested in reading about them (it makes us feel better about ourselves). Regardless, it sure doesn't look promising for that little girl.

The neighbor did not say that about the feces. Ms. Moore said she didn't know anything that, IIRC She said that blanket was found in her trashcan.

It was "sources" that said the feces was on the porch rail. I am not sure if NG added the feces on blanket to the story. It was hard for me to discern if that detail got skewed.

The raw sewage story makes me ill. I think there is more to the story of why family can't return. The raw sewage spill doesn't seem like it would only affect one residence. I hope that makes sense. So sad. It it depressing and maddening to keep hearing such these stories.

There is an Amber Alert for a 22 month old child in Hoke County, NC. I read that his hair and eye color unknown. WTH? I can't believe we can't account for where kids live, like Shaniya. Or what they look like? I can't comprehend JMT&OO.

They've made an arrest for kidnapping, but the girl's still missing:

Police say they've arrested a North Carolina a man in the disappearance of a 5-year-old girl but are still looking for the child.

Fayetteville police said Clarence Coe was arrested around 11 p.m. Wednesday and charged with first degree kidnapping.

Lt. Alex Thompson said investigators are still searching Shaniya Davis. The child was reported missing from her home just before 7 a.m. Tuesday. Her mother said she last saw Shaniya around 5:30 a.m.

Thompson said investigators aren't yet saying how or if Coe knew the child.

Police said Coe was arrested at his home in Fayetteville without incident. He was being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center early Thursday. A jail official said records didn't indicate whether he had an attorney.

Chance said the family has a history with the Department of Social Services.

"There have been major DSS issues with this family – who has custody, switching back and forth," Chance said.

Chance said it's unknown whether the child's disappearance is related to those issues. Police said Shaniya's father flew in from out of state Tuesday afternoon and was talking to investigators.

Does anyone here know what the previous issues are with DSS? Why haven't they released the mothers name or the BF?

So the blanket thing and the neighbour hearing the racket at 3am are not related? Why would someone put the blanket in the neighbour's trash can?
Did they then stay up till 5:30 and put Shaniya on the couch?

If this is a stranger, there's no reason for Antoinette to lie about the 5:30 time. Or was she in fact taken at 3am and the mom and home residents looked for her but were too scared to tell 911 that Shaniya disappeared a lot earlier...all that time waiting to call 911???

Since the investigation began, police have suspected foul play was involved. They said Thursday that Coe was a suspect early on. A police spokesman wouldn't say Thursday if he was cooperating with detectives.

Police responded to the home around 6:50 a.m., and Shaniya's mother told officers that she last saw her daughter at 5:30 a.m. The child was at the home with her mother, one other adult and a 7-year-old child.

"The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are very odd. A 5-year-old usually...(is) not awake at 5:30 a.m. normally, and they just wouldn't leave their home," Fayetteville police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said. "If she would have wandered out of her home, she would be around here somewhere."

Police K-9s, fire officials and deputies with the Cumberland County Sheriffs Office are searching the area. The dogs did not not pick up a scent. Chance said if the child was wandering around outside, the dogs would have picked up her scent immediately.

Shaniya is described as 3-feet tall and 40 pounds. She has brown hair and brown eyes.

She was last seen wearing a blue T-shirt with pink underwear. She is thin and has a scar on her foot.

Fayetteville police say three registered sex offenders live in the neighborhood. Theresa Chance said the offenders, along with everyone else in the neighborhood, have been interviewed.

The sex offenders are not considered suspects, Chance said.

This happens so often. The mothers BF's get thier kids. If I ever divorce, I do not want any men in our lives for this reason. You just never know.

I'm wondering now also if the custody dispute had anything to do with the dad not trusting this guy.

I'm wondering now if Shaniya went with him willingly, on a ruse. But then, why did dogs not pick up her scent.

As for this guy being the mom's BF as stated in a link above, I though the BF lived in the MB with them.

Yes, if Shaniya knew him should could have gone with him willingly.

What did the neighbor hear outside exactly? Anyone have clarification on that?

I also thought the BF was in the MH.

The neighbour woke up at 3 am from hearing beating/banging "on her MH wall", later clarifying that it may have been due to positioning the garbage can since it was stuck in an area between her porch and a wall. IIRC

Here is the articl;e about the blanket:

Investigators recovered a blanket that might belong to Shaniya Nicole Davis from a neighbor's garbage can. The neighbor, Andrea Moore, said police told her the blanket belonged to the missing girl.

Moore said she was awakened by noises outside her home at about 3 a.m. Tuesday.

"It sounded like somebody was beating (on the wall)," she said.

She went back to sleep but was awakened later by police saying they were confiscating her trash can because it contained evidence in the disappearance of her young neighbor.

MOORE: No, I`m not. I live across the street from the family.

GRACE: Oh. So you`re like the front`s-door neighbor?

MOORE: Right. I live on the main street coming into this park.

GRACE: OK.

MOORE: And they live on a side street off of the main street.

GRACE: I understand. Ms. Moore, how far away from your home is their home, would you say? How many feet?

MOORE: Oh, maybe 200.

GRACE: Now, I`m interested in that, Ms. Moore -- with me is Shaniya`s neighbor of about 200 feet away -- how Shaniya`s blanket, her baby blanket, could end up in your trash? Had their family ever used your trash receptacle before?

MOORE: Well, I can`t say that that family did, but many people use our trash cans on this side of the street.

GRACE: Two hundred feet away is quite a distance to walk to throw away a baby`s blanket. Ms. Moore -- with me, everyone, from Fayetteville, North Carolina, Andrea Moore. Police have recovered Shaniya`s -- little Shaniya`s favorite blanket in her trash

Is this the same lady who heard the noise at around 3am?

3. Blanket with fecal matter was found in Andrea Moore's trash can.

4. Fecal matter was found on the porch of the mobile home where Shaniya lived.

5. Unknown witness reported Coe as being seen with the child.

6. Coe is arrested on kidnapping charges and is to be arraigned Thursday afternoon.

7. Mobile home park manager reports Coe as being the boyfriend of mother and has been to mobile home on several occasions.

"There have been major DSS issues with this family – who has custody, switching back and forth," Chance said.

Chance said it's unknown whether the child's disappearance is related to those issues. Police said Shaniya's father flew in from out of state Tuesday afternoon and was talking to investigators.

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/6387156/

Also in article, it states that the police have been there on numerous occasions for drug related issues.

Maybe mom had bf to take Shaniya so her bio dad couldn't see/take her. I'm hoping there's going to be a good end to the story but somehow I doubt it.

Should this also be added to list? Someone mentioned this upthread.

Police spokeswoman Theresa Chance said the family has a history with the Department of Social Services as far as custody of Shaniya and other children in the house.

Chance said police also have been called to the home before. Officers served a search warrant at the home over the summer and found various illegal drugs inside.

Great job:laugh: I dont understand the feces being on the porch does anyone else understand this?

Let's think about this. IF the blanket was used to mop up a mess in the bathroom, would one drag it out onto the porch? I don't think so. One would put it in a garbage bag, I'd think.
Also, why mop up a mess with a BLANKET? Why not a towel if that was the closest thing in the bathroom? And ......on NG, it was stated this was Shaniya's FAVOURITE blanket (if that's true). Doesn't make sense the family would use that for such a chore.

So my feeling is that possibly something bad happened, and that Shaniya was IN the blanket, maybe dragged across the porch and the blanket opened somehow. Remember, with death, the bowels empty themselves. I hate typing this but it's a possibility.

Coe or whoever gets rid of the blanket in the trash can 200 feet away at the neighbour's MH. Maybe he's in a vehicle, maybe he put Shaniya elsewhere and then took her into the woods or to that nearby lake.

I hope I'm wrong, just very wrong.

I don't get it, either Coe was in the home that night, and they all knew what happened, or he did snatch Shaniya after 5:30 and the blanket business is unrelated.

Cog...I saw this reference last night. However, I was under the impression that this family only moved here in August. I am unsure about the dates here. Major confused.

IMO

I keep wondering about the feces. They were, from reports experiencing sewer problems. However, often times when someone passes on, feces is released within minutes of death. Sick and sad to say, yet this feces thing is extremely bothersome to me. Why is it on the blanket and porch rail? IMO

This is just an awful thought so please forgive me but could the fecal matter be from being molested/raped a certain way.

I see you and I are on the very same page, sad thought it is.

The Mom's lack of interviews with the press have me concerned. I know it is not a requirement, but it certainly seems common and somewhat sensible when a child goes missing. Either she was involved or she KNEW who did this? IMO
