Remember the old saying about not eating shell fish in the months with a U in it?

No, I had never heard that, but then, I dont eat shellfish, no matter what month it is. LOL

The saying was that you only eat oysters in the months that have R's in them.

Perhaps, we grew up in different parts of the Country and have different saying for the same issues.

What part of the country did you grow up in?

From the OP's link:

Until the 1960s, raw oysters were rarely eaten in the summertime. (The old adage was never eat oysters in the months without an R in them.)

Both would be more or less the same, with the exception of the months of may and february.

You will like this one, nine.

Should you really only eat shellfish when there's an 'R' in the month?

If you've ever gotten seafood sickness, you may think shellfish should be eaten only when there's a "Z" in the month -- as in, never.

And that is exactly why I dont eat shellfish. Eeeeeewwwwww nasty, nasty, nasty. Oysters, to me, look like something someone else has eaten and couldnt keep down. YUCK. Just looking at the pic on that page made me gag LOL

I like fried oysters but I don't look at them while I'm munching on them.

This is one of those things I probably shouldnt have such a strong opinion on, since to be honest, I have never tried ANY shellfish. LOL...just the thought of it makes me shiver. It's like Cow Fries...never tried them either, but I KNOW I wouldnt like them.

You've never had lobster or shrimp? Now that's some good eatin'. Lobster and shrimp (or prawns) and king crabs are Crustaceans, while oysters, scallops, mussels and clams are Mollusks. Do we have to worry about ALL mollusks? Mabe oysters are the only ones some of us would eat raw.
And Crustaceans - should we say "forget Sushi?)
I like all of the above cooked anyway. As you say - some good eatin'

The article only mentions oysters. Do folks eat a lot of this stuff raw?

I love all types of seafood.

I also love raw oysters. Yummy they are so delicious. The way they look has never bothered me. I put a lot of Tabasco sauce/salt/peeper on mine. What I have never understood though is some people who eat raw oysters swallow them without chewing them. That is what makes them so good, imo. They have a very firm chewy part to them where it was connected to the shell.

But I never eat raw oysters if the month doesn't have an R in them.

We get them from the seafood market and I never get the oysters from a supermarket.

A bushel of oysters are so expensive though. Last year they were around $40.00 a bushel. If we buy the bushel it is because we are having a cookout where we have raw oysters on the half shell, oyster Rockefeller and fried oysters available.

When my husband and I have fresh oyster stew we get a quart of shucked fresh oysters plus a pint. It expensive for one meal but highly worth it imo.

imo

The danger with the raw oysters..it doesnt effect raw clams? I mean the "R" month rule doesnt apply to clams? Or does it?

Raw clams are risky, too. http://www.thisweeknews.com/live/content/food/stories/2009/04/08/safeandsanitary.html

I love me some Appalachacola raw oysters or chesapeake Bay oysters. Those are my favorites. I can eat 4-5-6 dozen at a sitting if they are really fresh. And, yes, it is like playing Russian roulette with them.....but I still do it.

When I lived in Galveston, we'd go out in December and oyster. Took our knives and gloves and popped them open right there and ate them with red sauce on crackers. Fun!

a little alcohol imbibed with them probably killed any bacteria:blink:

I love shrimp, crabs and lobster, but not oysters and crawfish

oysters are like chitlins, people put a lot of Tabasco on them and swallow, think is do to the aphrodisiac myths or something, both to me are disgusting

No, I remember do not eat shellfish is the months without an R in them. Those being May, June, July and Aug, the months of higher temperatures and higher incidence of red tide. Problem today is the 12 month harvesting. jmg

My question would be, can cooking accomplish the same as the anti-bacterial process? If so, why not prohibit the serving of raw oysters and allow the enjoyment of oyster stew, escalloped oysters, fried etc continue?

ok, I do like oyster stew, as long as no sand in it, just have not had that in forever, grandma use to cook it, not something I have ever ordered out or prepare myself, one byte into a oyster that is gritty and it's all over I am done

I love raw oysters and when I was little my dad would buy a quart of oysters and make oyster stew. Just the thought is making my mouth water. I like oysters cooked and raw, and Oyster Rockefeller is heaven.

I also love raw mussels. They are delicious too and have a much firmer flesh then oysters.

AND I love, love, love sashimi. BTW Sushi is NOT raw fish, sashimi is raw fish. Tuna (ahi) is the best. We eat it with wasabi and soy sauce or hot mustard and soy sauce. It's very expensive for the good stuff but now and then we splurge.

I've also eaten raw octopus. But it's pretty chewy and it's not one of my favorites. But if I was hungry I could eat it.
