DETROIT - Soupy Sales, the rubber-faced comedian whose anything-for-a-chuckle career was built on 20,000 pies to the face and 5,000 live TV appearances across a half-century of laughs, has died. He was 83.
Sales died at Thursday night at Calvary Hospice in the Bronx, New York, said his former manager and longtime friend, Dave Usher. Sales had many health problems and entered the hospice last week, Usher said.
At the peak of his fame in the 1950s and '60s, Sales was one of the best-known faces in the nation, Usher said.

RIP Soupy :rose:
Loved watching his show with my Dad, too..lots of laughs. Loved the 'pieces of green paper with mens faces on them' - was priceless and funny even though it got him in a bit of hot water.

Time for me to sleep..almost..but I've spent a lot of today (among other things) watching Soupy's videos on YouTube. he was funny...special sense of humour...growing up with that as a kid, IMO, you had a more "sophisticated" (?) or "weird" sense of humour? I love FANG..I remember as a kid...mimicking him. Between Soupy and Phillis Diller..I just loved them.
When I lived and worked in Boston, there was a company...I think the name was "Pie in the Face" or at least it was one of their Offerings..no doubt from Soupy..you could order a "pie in the face" to be delivered! Really!
RIP Soupy..many times...make my Mom laugh up there, ok?

I loved his innocent humor ! :rose:
HAHA..not so innocent at times, was it?! I loved it too..and even if I didn't totally understand it Back Then..as years went by..it was definitely even more Funny. I saw it, as I got older, as a sardonic sense of humour - almost Brit in flavour...and hitting on things..as comedy does..that many don't even think about.
I think he played to the adult audience, even more than the kids. He was no Mr. Rogers (sp?) or Captain Whatshisname..but I loved his show more than those others that I hardly ever watched. How he'd pick on the people in the "studio" - it's funny. Gosh..stage people do that all the time..but you'd never see it on TV!
Gosh..would love to go for Halloween as "FANG"..guess all I need are two fluffy arms with nails?! The rest behind a cardboard box? LOL
