Police investigate Geneva woman's disappearance
Police said Friday they could not rule out the possibility of foul play in a Geneva woman's disappearance 10 days ago.
Mia B. Hays, 20, was last seen at 1:17 a.m. Sept. 23 at a Greyhound Bus terminal at 630 W. Harris St. in Chicago, several hours after her mother expected her home.
"Mia would not do something like this on her own," her mother, Camille Spillone, said Friday. "She has a 2-year-old daughter. She would not just take off."
Spillone said the last time she spoke with her daughter, about 8:30 p.m. Sept. 22, Hays told her she was on her way home from a house cleaning job at the home of a St. Charles man she met recently.
She never made it home, and instead was last seen on video at the Chicago bus station.
Spillone said information she has received indicates the St. Charles man took her to the station and then claims to have left her there. A Greyhound ticket purchased in her daughter's name never was used or refunded. Hays left her cell phone behind.

CHICAGO - A west suburban Geneva woman disappeared 10 days ago. Police say they are not ruling out foul play. 20-year-old Mia Hayes was last seen shortly after 1 a.m. September 23, at the Greyhound Bus terminal in Chicago. Her mother, Camille Spillone, says Mia wouldn't just take off. She has a two-year-old daughter to care for.
Mia Hays is 5-feet 4-inches tall, and weighs about 115 pounds. She has brown eyes and straight brown hair. Her mom says the last time she spoke to Mia, she was on her way home from a house cleaning job at a home in Saint Charles.
If you have any information, please call Geneva police at 630-232-473. Ask for Commander Julie Nash.

I hope she is okay. Comments after the first article omsk99 posted (Daily Herald) mention she wrote on her Facebook that she needed to have a new life.

I hope that's the case here, too, lima24. Strange that she left her cell phone behind, and didn't use the bus ticket. She didn't have her ID or much money, either...

I think her being at the bus station is hinky. I wonder what the St. Charles man she was cleaning for has said why he took her there. It just doesn't seem like she would have called her mom and said she was heading home if she didn't intend to. Could that man have forced her to buy the bus ticket as a cover? It was never used after all. I pray she is found safe, a pretty girl with a little one at home waiting....

I wonder where she phoned her mom from if she left her cell phone behind. This all sounds very hinky to me. Hope she's just taken off and is safe.

"Spillone and Hays' cousin, Danielle Darrus, expressed frustration with how police have handled Hays' disappearance -- especially the lack of information shared publicly.
"They're not telling me anything," Spillone said.
Nash said police are sensitive to the family's concerns as they try to figure out what happened to Hays. Information about Hays has been sent to other police departments.
Darrus, who thinks police have sent the family "in circles," posted a plea for information about Hays on Craigslist. A family friend also posted a description of Hays on a blog.
Spillone said she put up fliers in the Cumberland Green Drive area, where Hays had gone for the cleaning job, and has set up an account through Chase Bank to raise money to pay for more fliers.
Spillone also said family members have contacted "America's Most Wanted" and a Kankakee-based radio station to pick up Hays' story, which includes a 2-year-old wondering about her mother.
Spillone's words tremble when she mentions Hays' young daughter.
"She keeps asking for her mom," Spillone said of the child. "I'm not holding up very well."

It's good news she was seen at the bus stop on the 23rd, so she must have spent the night somewhere. I hope she left on her own (even if accompanied by someone else), btu will get in touch with her family very soon, especially because she left a little baby girl behind.

Per Find Mia Hays facebook page:
There has been little information from police and no leads.
Frustration level seems high.

This whole story doesn't make sense. If I remember correctly (used to live in that area) Geneva and St. Charles are very close together. If she was from Geneva and cleaned in St. Charles, the Chicago bus station is at least an hour away. No where near on the way home, etc.

First the "house" Mia was to be cleaning is not a house, its an apartement to a 22 year old male. Tell me what 22 year old hires a 20 year old to clean his place. And what 22yr old picks up and drives home his "maid". And why wont he talk directly to the mother if he did nothing......and 2nd, why wont the police let the mother see the so called video tape from the Grey Hound station? How do they know that this person on the video is Mia if the family has not verified that it was her?!!!!
Why are other family memebers telling people that Mia is at a homeless shelter and that they have the phone number there. And why is this so called phone number not given to the police? Why not to the entire family that is spending there time and energy looking for her?
What the heck is going on! Someone knows more than they are letting on and this family is going to look like complete fools in the end

Where are you getting your information from? Specifically the part about the family telling people she's at a homeless shelter? Maybe I missed something.

I don't know what anyone can do about an adult that just decides to walk away.
Her poor mother and child are frantic and she is just off somewhere?
She has abandoned her daughter, it would seem.
Glad she's ok but it burns me up that she wasted 4 weeks of LE resources! The good news is she left her daughter behind safe with grandma.

I'm relieved that she's ok too, but her poor little daughter...how on earth will she come to terms, later in life, that her mother left her?
Then her own mother...Mia was HER baby. Four weeks of anguish, and Mia turns up because of the flier. What if she'd never seen a flier?

Good to hear she's not missing after all and is safe. I'm on the fence about her leaving her 2 yo daughter. On the one hand, better off with grandma than God knows where. On the other, she's abandoned her baby girl. Maybe she'll get it together and grow up but I suspect she wants to have a good time and not be tied down to a child. At least she's not laying dead somewhere. It makes me mad that she didn't let her mother know she was safe all this time.

I agree.
I think that if she is not willing to be a mom, then if grandma is willing, the baby is better off.
I do think she should have called her mom and just said, I am taking some time away and I am fine. But she did not.
It is a relief she is okay.

It really pisses me off when kids (and, imo, Mia is still a kid herself) have babies and then abandon them to be raised by the grandparent. As a grandma if, God forbid, my DD abandoned my g/kids, I'd happily take them on. However, to be honest, my child rearing days are over and, whilst I love my g/kids more than life itself, I really wouldn't want to bring them up at this stage of my life. I'm only 52 but do feel that I've done my job insofar as bringing kids up is concerned although I am am my kids' biggest cheerleader and supporter.

I think it is interesting she has spoke with her father in NC, but has not spoke to her mother.
Could she have wanted to put the baby up for adoption and Grandma insisted she keep the baby?

I guess it's possible although I think, more likely, Grandma has been on her about her irresponsibility and she's probably not ready to get an earful from her mom. JMHO.

Yes, Mia has made the mistake of leaving her daughter behind and I'm really disappointed in her but there's got to be something else going on with her. She's not the type of person to just take off on her daughter. Just wish she would come home and talk to her mom and work things out and make things better. It's not doing her any good to be out and doing this.

Welcome and thanks for posting! Is there a chance that she's let drug usage get out of control? Not that it's any of my business but that's the only reason I can think of to do what she did. I know some personally that have taken off for this reason.
