I agree. Another example of "nanny" state? omy... it's crazy. And I wonder about the person who "reported" this big-hearted Mom. Maybe someone who was not in the "cirlce of friends" who benefited from the arrangement... Pretty petty, it seems. I did exactly the same for one neighbor: her kids came to my house til closer to bus time and they and my kids (and I) went to the busstop. It was a simple kindness. But now it takes a license to do this? I'm kerplexed?
Does the state benefit if this Mom would agree to licensure as day care, etc? Revenue to the state or something? Geez-Louise.

I had this happen. I had a simular situation w/some parents, which was fine, but another women's children which she left home alone alot even though they were no where near the age appropriate to do so, nor was her children very good children also ended up at the bus stop w/us even though, we did not agree to watch out for those children . One of them got kicked out of everywhere he went, and is probably in jail somewhere now. Would also show up at our door. Never fed, never dressed appropriately. This child would start fights at the bus stop, knock on doors in the mornings, mess w/stuff in the neighbors yards, tear down flower beds. He was awful. So no one would have complained about the children, me and one other mother was watching but those other children that just happened to have been in the mix. Others were complaining about. . and ofcourse, even though we were not responsible for or had we agreed to watch over those other children. We frequently got the brunt of the neighbors being mad at those children. We did try to yell at the one alot but he was 6 and so unruly, no one could do much w/him. He once set his house on fire. No kidding.

Holy Cow. This is ridiculous. Of course the lovely woman giving of her time and heart to do this is taking a "risk" if her friends turn around and "sue" her..but it surely doesn't seem likely. Sounds like a jealous or gossipy neighbor causing problems for all these women..the Sitter and the Mothers who are so grateful for that little bit of help in the mornings.
That question about having "EXIT" signs in the house (as in a daycare) is a red herring, as I see it. I'd guess many of "us" have done this to help out a friend..be it before school, after school, as "pick up" if emergency at school when the bio mom isn't available or unreachable.
With everything that is going on economically today and parents needing to get to work, and the bus stop is in front of their neighbor's home, what is wrong with this? Have your neighbor Licensed to watch your children for an hour or less before the bus comes? And..that one person's comment to the question..have them use an umbrella? Gheesh. I'd surely rather have my kid in the "care/watch" of a kind neighbor friend, than standing under an umbrella at a bus stop, alone, where they could be "swooped up". What is wrong with people?
They'd make this lovely woman get a daycare license to be a good samaritan, of sorts, to open her living room to those little kids so they can be warm and WATCHED until the bus shows up? (redtape, money..and she is NOT getting paid, plus she is a Friend of these other families)
First..I wouldn't entrust the care of my child to anyone..licensed or not..that I didn't trust, entirely...and know they would treat my child the same as their own...emergency..they know where the door is and all exits. Realistically, in a daycare..if the caretaker was "knocked out'..what then? What does an Exit sign mean? Any more than having told the children..here's the door..here's the back door..here's the telephone..dial THIS number? This woman is not making Money doing this..she is being a Good Neighbor and Friend.
I don't know how many others are..but I grew up in an "era" where neighbors looked out for each other..it wasn't a substitute Mom/Dad..but it was for emergency..or letting the kid in the house until the bus came - no $$ passed hands - and maybe it was a "trade off"..you watch my kid..I'll be backup for yours. I'd rather entrust the "care" of my child to a friend/neighbor than to a licensed daycare - one out of economic infeasibility for it, but mostly because I know my friend and neighbor and Trust him/her.
Somebody here wanted to cause trouble. For Shame.

ITA, no doubt envy or jealousy. So very sad. HLN reporter said the law on the books is so old it could actually apply to you allowing your child to bring in another for a sleep over and could easily encompass you hiring a baby sitter. Unreal, who would have the money to appeal or change the law, hope the state stands up.

Or perhaps someone who runs an in-home day care and wants the revenue of these ladies to possibly bring their children to HER business?
I think it's getting way, way too out of hand. You can't go to the bathroom or blow your nose these days IN YOUR OWN HOME without someone wanting to regulate it. Everyone just needs to get a life, get a job and leave their neighbors alone. Unless they see the parents blatantly abusing their children or the elderly in their home. Then, go ahead and report.
These women obviously did NOT have a problem with leaving their children there, they weren't coherced to do so. And, the part where Lisa says she asked about a friend coming to play w/her daughter and the answer was--only if the parents were @ home, but she couldn't have the friend over to play w/the daughter if the parents were going to the store. GMAB!!!! There is a whole world of people who do that--who the heck can afford a baby sitter for every little thing. Around here--"Hey, do you mind if I run to Dillons while Johnny is over there?" Or, perhaps even, "I want to run to Dillons but Johnny doesn't want to go. Can he go over and play with Jr for a while?"
I guess that means that, every time your child wants a playmate over, you have to grill the parent(s) to see if they are going to remain in their home while the kids play? Do you have to call their home phone periodically to make sure they are there and not out shopping or something?

Bolding mine.
I'd be looking at the neighborhood licensed day care provider who's ticked off she can't charge a minimum $130 a week per head for less than an hour a day each.
I have the highest degree of confidence common sense will win out in this case. It's so petty as to be laughable if there weren't real lives being impacted by it.

Boy oh boy..the more I read other's responses...which I agree with, BTW..it almost seems like this could get so out of hand..and end up Parents of their own children have to have a DayCare License? so their children can have friends over for a playdate? Sounds OUT THERE..but I wouldn't be surprised if some NUTCASE tries to turn it into a Regulation/law.
It's absolutely crazy and a waste of time, court time/legislative argument..and is hurting a lot of very very nice people.
Gheesh.

@ least the congressman on the show w/them seems to have common sense. Too bad someone has to go back to the legislation covering this and make changes. Like he said, someone is taking this beyond the letter of the legislation. For shame on the person "reporting" and for shame on the investigator who took it further. Once s/he talked with the moms and understood the situation, s/he should have smiled, and said "carry on!!!!" and left. Investigation closed. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or someone with a degree in whatever to determine there is nothing wrong w/this situation.
I see someone else tho't also of the reporter being a licensed daycare provider who sees money slipping thru her hands. Or, it could be a mom jealous that she and her kids were not in the group?

I have tenants in a home near a school bus stop. The stop is a couple of doors from the home of a registered sex offender. The children now go to the home of my tenants - along with a couple of cousins who are there really early and the mom walks down the drive with all the kids when its time for the bus. The school bus drivers are making an unofficial "adjustment" to where they stop. Hope that no idiot "powers that be" get wind of this common sense manner of dealing with the problem.
My tenant has child in each of the schools: Elementary, Middle and High school.
The sex offender lives a few feet outside the required 1/2 mile from a nearby elementary school. We measured. Nothing we can do.

That wouldn't surprise me in the least!!! Leave it to some stupid law being duly enforced, to allow them full access to some poor, little kid standing all alone at the bus stop...under an unbrella...

I wonder when grandparents won't be aloud to spend a day with their grandchild because it could be concidered babysitting for free.

I'm sure that will be next. Won't be able to let your kids spend time w/the cousins, either. Especially if you and hubby might go to the movies or shopping while they are there.
People need to get a life and stay out of other people's business. GOVERNMENT needs to stay out of people's lives and businesses.
