My daughter was on a site that claims to be Tom Riddles diary. It started asking her personal questions like her name and where she was. I took over and asked some pretty pointed questions and it answered me fairly detailed. I mentioned reporting it and it said "You can't have me shut down." It said that it can't be found and the 10 year olds are too old for him. Where should I report it. This can't be good.

I'd phone your local LE agency. If they can't help you, they'll direct you to someone who can. Please keep us updated.

Yes and my husband thinks it's just a bot but the answers it was giving me seemed pretty real. It's asking kids where they live? That's just kind of freaky. Maybe I spend too much time here and I'm paranoid?

Well I'm kind of concerned about the last sentence you wrote in your first post, and the question about where kids live. I'd call the nearest police station and ask for advice.

have the kids ever been on there before? I had never heard of it and don't keep up with that movie or whatever it is but if that is a bot it sure is a smart one that does not like to say bye it kept asking my name when I said bye and then I put LOL and it got angy I was laughing out loud...keep us posted if you find out it is ok or we should be concerned

I live in a podunk town and the police aren't going to take this seriously. I'm looking for an online resource. The site isn't connected to the book and when it asked my daughter where she lived she ran right up and told me. I asked it if it spends much time luring children and it said yes. I asked if it was aware that asking children personal questions could show signs of being a pedophile on the other end. That when it asked my age. I said 10 and it said I was too old for it. I said are you aware how easy it is to track IP addresses and it said "you can't shut me down." That's when I came here. My husband thinks I'm overreacting but I'd rather err on the side of caution. In any case, it's definitely phishing.

I googled "How to report phishing scams" and a lot of sites came up including government agencies, but these address identity theft issues more. I'm not sure how a possible pedophile situation could be reported.

A 'bot' is a robotic program that replies automatically. It works well if you're clear but get weird and it falls to pieces.

A bot offers automated responses with little human interaction. I found a site that encourages reports on possible online predators. It was answering my questions very different than it was for my husband. It was asking me what I was wearing and telling me that it was far more intelligent than I am. I went ahead and sent a report admitting I might be paranoid, but like I said. I spend too much time here to think that overreacting to something that is potentially dangerous is better than underreacting. My police dpt are the type to not check out reports that ends in a child living in a tent in someone's back yard bearing their children for 18 years.
I reported it here: CPReports@comcast.net
I'll keep you guys posted. BTW my daughter said "WOW! those people sure helped you fast." I said "They all wish that they could have helped other children sooner." So thank you all, and thanks from my daughter.

What to report
We accept reports about cyberabuses (crimes that take place online) such as cyberstalking, identity theft and child exploitation.
If they somehow have information on where to find your child, they insist you notify local LE before they'll get involved. But in this case, since your daughter didn't give that information, reporting to them would be the way to go.

Pull up FBI's website and locate that area. They're probably the best ones to notify b/c there may have been related crimes across straight lines. Call them NOW, save what you can of that site, speak to someone in the FBI for this specialty and see if they want you to keep him on line perhaps to help trace him or something.
BUT ACT NOW, you may just be saving someone's life.

Climbing Rose echos my thoughts completely and what I was about to post but she said it for me. You can probably forward the link to the FBI somehow or at least call them. Your internet security may say it is a safe site but they are probably meaning it is safe from viruses, worms and trojans. I am sure they do not mean "safe" as from a predator or sicko. It is most likely a automated reply..but what if it isn't and asking where a child lives and what they wear is to hinky for me. IF it is automated, they just want the info for stats..but if it isnt then in this day and age, no one on the internet should be asking a child where they live. Better to pursue it and turn it over to FBI who will check it out....or call Dateline or one of those investigative agencies..even our local news will do a investigation on suspected crimes.

Ditto. CRose is "on it". If you can print any of the pages that came up, if you saved them or can retrieve them "do". CRose is giving you valuable information. Unfortunately, I have found that local police (not because they don't want to, necessarily) do not Take Action unless or until there is a "reason" per their protocol. Found this out by trying to report internet "fraud" but had to take it to the FBI site.
Harry Potter or not - that is entirely idiotic for a site to be asking those questions...with our "world" in the way it is. "What are you wearing?".."Where do you live"? Would a kid say New Jersey or give a house address? Doesn't sound very Innocent to me. IF, they are legit...they can be "sanctioned" and set straight.

And if you get no satisfaction from the FBI's website or your local LE (which has been said that they usually don't act until something has happened) try submitting the information and the site link to 20/20 or Dateline or some huge news media-----weren't they crazy about doing pedofile stuff a year or so ago? I cannot believe they wouldn't be interested in researching this. I would think they have "people" who would be more than happy to research this and report back what they found. If you see it in one of their segments, you'll kow the results, if not, maybe it was harmless-----------although I don't think it sounds harmless. JMO

There are several sites out there like this. I know Burger King had one years ago with a giant chicken. They have a database that stores all kinds of words and phrases and how the character should respond to the words if you ask it a particular question. It looks like live replies, but it's just using a database. It can be quite convincing.

I wonder how many parents wished that they'd reacted a bit more. When it comes to my kids, I'll overreact any day of the week. I did report the site (I appreciate all of you that jumped in to help, like I said, always better to be safe). R~O~S was correct in saying that my daughter was wise to stop and tell me about it, because I'm a member of this site I've taught my children to be very cautious. Why go there? She's a little girl who read the books. She stopped immediately and told me. The Diary IS a bad thing in the movie. The books and movie are fictional, but predators aren't. It may be a phishing site or it may just be a really stupid person that never stopped to think that asking kids what their names are, where they live and what they are wearing is a really REALLY bad idea. If we learn nothing more than an ounce of prevention on this site that tells us the horrors of the little Caylee Anthonys, Jessica Lunsfords, and Elizabeth Smarts of this world, we can at least try to protect our little corner of the world. I thank everyone who helped me to protect mine. Not to mention that I saved every link that those of you who cared enough to respond, gave me. I'll report anything I don't like the look of.

Apparently there are sites that do that sort of phishing. I don't know the age of the child but if it were my child, I wouldn't permit access to any site that is interactive and which asks questions of the child. That would effectively solve the problem.

She's 12 and she is not permitted on hinky sites. This is why she stopped short and came and got me. I asked the questions to determine whether it was okay or not. I err on the side of caution. I can put up fences to keep them from the freaks of the world or I can teach them to recognize something that doesn't feel right and come tell me. I brought it to the attention of some of the various links I was kindly given here. And to other moms some have appreciated it some are going to tell me I messed up. I'll stick with the ones who recognize the effort I've made to teach my children to recognize potential danger when I'm not watching over their shoulders.

In this day and age, there is sofware available to block unwanted sites from one's computer. That's one way to handle it. No one is criticizing you, at least I'm not. It's not that hard to prevent this, however. A quick search on Google will help you find out how to do it.
Even though I'm an adult, I limit my visits to certain types of sites. I only go to ones that provide information that is useful to me in technical and legal areas of interest. These sites are tried and true and are frequented by people who are like-minded.
Traveling too far into strange areas, even though they are seemingly appropriate, can lead to unexpected results. For that reason, even as adults, we have to be careful. Even if people aren't phishing for information, you can pick up a virus that can either cause you to have to redo the whole computer or can even make the hard drive unrecoverable.
It's a jungle out there in the internet.
