BONAPARTE, Iowa -- The estate of a southeast Iowa couple killed by their son has been auctioned off to seven buyers for nearly $1 million.
Saturday's sale came nearly three years after Shawn Bentler of Quincy, Ill., was charged with killing his parents and three younger sisters at the family's home near Bonaparte. Bentler was convicted of first-degree murder and is serving life in prison.
Sullivan Auctioneers refused to name the buyers at the request of the Bentler family, and the buyers themselves declined to comment.
The 445-acre estate of Sandra and Michael Bentler was divided into seven tracts of land. One included the Bentler home and 28 acres of surrounding land, which sold for $225,000. The rest was divided into six tracts and sold on a price-per-acre basis. The total purchase price was $973,800.
State law prohibits those convicted of murder from benefiting from their victims' deaths.
A court ruling in April 2008 determined Shawn Bentler's two daughters -- Cloe Nicole Bentler and Avaley Ann Leslie -- each would receive half of their grandparents' estate. The estate had an estimated value of $2.8 million at the time, which included a controlling interesting in Mount Hamil Lumber & Elevator, Mount Pleasant Lumber and Donnellson Elevator. The companies were sold after the murders.
