Has anybody been to there local fair yet this season. The one near me is closign Sunday I beleive. So today will probably be the biggest day. Yesterday it rained from about 6:00 p.m. to 10:30. And around 10:30 it was great to be outside. The day before I went to McDonald's and I saw all the traffic since the fair ground here are abot three miles from my house. And I told the lady at McDonald's I said "do you all have alot of buisness because of the fair", and she said "yes" I replied well "You got eat before you ride the rides" oh me ,maybe it was just me.
I am sure alot of little ones and kids had a good time. I hope.
Anyone else been yet???

Our state fair comes in March so is long past. Why would you stop @ McDonalds to eat before going to a fair? Why not enjoy all of the good (tho mostly unhealthy) fair foods? That is part of the fair experience to me. Eating the corn dogs, cotton candy, candy apples, blooming onions, funnel cakes, pork a bobs, sausage on a stick, shrimp on a stick, bbq, corn on the cob, philly cheese steaks, etc.

Here in our area, there are fairs and festivals year round. We have a mixture of cultures and there is always something going on of interest.

We have lot's of "festivals" around here which most are food related to which we will eat our way through so to speak but as far as our State Fair and "fair food"? No thanks, overpriced and disgusting we never eat there and always go somewhere else before going to the fair to eat.

 Well since I can't stand twinkies ummmmm yeah I don't like deep fried twinkies either. I don't like deep fried anything. Most tastes like the grease it is cooked in and I am not going to pay to eat grease flavored anything. The smell of "fair food" is enough to keep me away from a fair but I love going through all of the exhibits to see entries of things people have made. That is my favorite part that along with watching the 4-H kids with their animal entries.

We have a lot of festivals around here too during the year. Pecan festival, Rice festival, crab festival, etc. And they offer many different types of food but only one state fair. It used to come in October but since September is our peak hurricane month the city voted to move it to March when there is no chance of a hurricane.

At our state fair there are hundreds of food items that are not fried. Pork a bobs, bbq, shrimp on a stick, turkey legs, corn on the cob, sausage on a stick, Mexican food, Cajun foods, beans & rice, chili & lots of grilled offerings.

We also have a long standing family tradition of getting our family photo done there in the Olde Time place.
Those are cool. I have one of my DS & dil in the wild west mode. He is the gunslinger & she is a dance hall gal.

Where did I say that our state fair only sells fried food? Ours has a lot of different foods to however they are what I consider "fair food" which is what I stated in another post that I don't care for.

Like I said I like to go to our county fair and even our state fair for the exhibits. I love looking at all the quilts, the different entries that people bring in on their canning be it peaches, pears all different things. The baking competitions, the 4-H competitions for the kids. That to me is the fair experience see and support and acknowledge the people who enter and compete. I just chose not to eat my way through with the typical carney food that travels with the carnivals that come with the county/state fairs. To each their own.

For me it's the L.A. County Fair which runs until October 4th. I haven't been to it since the 90s, so maybe I'll have a look-see. The incredible variety of foods offered does enhance the Fair experience. I like the exhibits and the various "Fair Special" bargains you can get at the vendor booths. If I go, please pray that I don't buy a case of ShamWows!

Or deep-fried hot fudge sundaes?
Our state fair was in August. I went with my Dad, Aunt, Uncle and Uncle's Sister on Senior Citizen Day. They did the all the free body fat, cholesterol, bp etc checks. I sat on a bench and watched all the seniors collecting all the freebies to put in their free Viagra shopping bags.
Then we worked our way through the fairgrounds stopping approximately every 30 minutes for food. I was amazed at how much food 4 72-78 year old adults could eat.
I went another day with a girlfriend. I had a good time both days, but Senior Citizen Day was definitely an experience.

I wish our state fair had baking competitions, I would sure enjoy that. Ours does not have canning competition either. We don't have a big 4H but we sure do have a huge FFA turn out for the showings of animals. Then after all of that is over they auction the animals. You can get some really good deals on some very good food animals, especially then ones that did not place high in the standings. And your money helps the kid that raised that animal. Few of the food booths are ones that travel with the fair here & I avoid those. Most are people who do this once or twice a year in this area, a few from as far away as Ok or Arkansas. Some from Louisianna since we are so close to that state. And many local family owned small restaurants have booths. So maybe ours is not the same as what is offered @ yours.

We are making a family trip to Raleigh for the State Fair in Oct--can't wait! I took the older kids every year when we lived in Raleigh.
Husband and I took our little 2 yr old grand-baby to our local fair (very small) on Labor day--and she would not get out of the rides when they stopped.
I love fair food. All of it. At our state fair they have the best roasted corn, french fries and batter fried vegetable. OMG. And we always park so that we hit the Fudge Shack before getting to the car--so we get good and sick eating the last of the fudge on the drive home.

WOW someone should have went to bed a lot earlier, where in her post did you see her putting down seniors? And I missed where she said she weights or weighs 120, I'm jealous!!!

The best fair I ever went to was the Vermont state fair, the highlight was the demolition derby.

Oooh, I love the demo derby. DH used to enter the derby when we were younger. We spent weeks getting the car ready.
We also saw....
the high school marching band competition. Kudos to the coaches and the kids. They were all amazing.
chain saw wood carving entries..beautiful pieces.
livestock judging under age 10. The children were just beaming ear to ear.
and of course the lumberjack show, search and track dogs and several product demonstrations. Oh and the butter cow. Every year, the artist adds 10-15 small little things to look for in the display...similar to the "find it" pages in the children's Highlights magazine. We found everything on the list but one item...the ladybug.
A good time was had by all.

I know what you mean about the fudge too! There is always a booth called Copper Kettle Fudge @ our fair that has wonderful fudge. They cook it right there in a huge copper kettle. I love their chocolate walnut & rocky road fudge. Always get a pound of it mixed to take home. My very favorite fair food is the corn dogs. I have eaten corn dogs @ home, even home made ones & other places but they are just not as good as @ the fair.

This place at the State Fair makes every kind of fudge, right there. It is simply the best in the world--and that included my own.
The grand-baby cracked us up! She had never seen rides before and she rode on the carousel then on the police cars then Thomas the tank engine. There were kids waiting in line and when the police car ride stopped, she actually scrambled from the back seat to the front seat and kept saying "No down, I ride car," till my husband persuaded the attendant to let her ride again, and gave her more tickets.
Then we went back to caroussel and when it started to slow down she started saying "NO DOWN, NO DOWN, NO DOWN."

I have already stated in my other posts on this thread that I know there are non-fried foods at the fairs I never said there wasn't I said I don't care for "fair food" in particular and would rather eat at a restaurant or at home before going to the fair or after the fair. Some people enjoy fair food and their smells I am one of those who don't. I am not going to keep defending my position on this. I know a lot of people who feel the same way as I do and as far as the bad smelling animal exhibits....they smell like animals and they are groomed and extremely clean for showing and judging not wallowing around in filth. So that is not an issue for me either.

Oh, well.
No matter how well an animal is groomed, the livestock and horse stalls and chicken coops, etc, truly do not smell of sunshine. Those halls and stalls are not for the faint of heart.
However, this is not a controversial issue, and while no doubt there are ppl who do not love the sweet smell of comfort food wafting in the air at fairs, it is just not a big issue.
My daughter, in college, worked at the best restaurant in Boston. She said that when they would go in the basement for salt and sugar and such, the rats almost fought them over the supplies. :w00t:

I like the smell of the livestock barns but that is an odor I grew up with. I especially loved opening the barn doors on a cold morning to catch the barn odor, a mixture of animal, hay, feed, saddle soap & oils. But I sure can see how someone who was not used to it would find it disagreeable.

I love that smell too war..I grew up in the city, but Mom & Dad always "went out to the county" for our milk & eggs. I loved the milk farm, with that BIG OLD vat of milk being stirred by the biggest paddle & ever saw. We would walik down to the barn to see the cows, I named every one of them and the calf's would suck our thumps..its was cool and the smell always brings back good memories for me ...no the chicken house..that's another story...PEE EWWW!!

Oh, I love the smell of a horse barn in the morning with the hay, feed and saddle soap--AND horse!
But that is not the prominent odor in the large animal hall exhibits, unfortunately. :blushing:

Wow Mr. Moto, I can't imagine how big a fair would be for LA County! Probably as big as some smaller state's state fairs?! I must be one of the few, don't really like kettle corn but funnel cakes a must have. I even make them at home once in awhile.

Yes, it's pretty big, with lots of exhibit halls, rides and of course animals. The fair grounds are known as the Fairplex. It operates year round, hosting various events in addition to the County Fair. There's a huge computer show every month.

 I love those elephant ears. I'm not too crazy about most fair food, but do love those.

I have never heard of it or seen it done until I moved south. I had a co-worker that would get a small bag of peanuts and a coke for lunch almost every day. I almost died the first time I saw her pour that bag of nuts in her bottle of coke. Though I have to say she never did it with canned coke, it was only with the bottled.

I'm smiling at the 'elephant' ears. We have some elephant ear plants growing in the back of the house and I was talking to my mom on the phone one day and was saying something about them and bf thought I was talking about the fair food?!
it was funny, because I'd never heard of the food 'elephant ear' and he'd never heard of the plant. It was a confusing conversation for a minute :tongueside:

My bold show me where I said anything about better/safer/more sanitary? I said I go to fairs for the exhibits NOT the food. I don't care for it end of discussion thank you. As far as the animal exhibits the most overpowering smell I smell at our fair can't say that for anyone elses fair is sawdust. I don't see why this is becoming an issue.

Hi bird,
No, in my experience, the peanuts in my coke were always salted/roasted peanuts. Boiled peanuts are a whole 'nuther thing. In the soutneast, you can find roadside stands with cauldrons set up with fresh green peanuts boiled in salty water. The skins are soft and the nuts are too.
They are a real treat. I looked forward to them every summer when we'd visit relatives in FL and GA. Last year y mom, 2 sis's and I went to put flowers on my Nanny's & GrandDaddy's graves and I made sure I stopped at every boilded peanut stand I could find!!

Everytime you take a swig of coke you get some peanuts in with it. You have a salty/sweet taste. And when you first pour the peanuts in the coke it fizzles up.

Not much for fairs. The last time I went was a County, about 2 years ago. The gal I took wasn't an afectionaro. We went for the purpose of watching the demolition derby. I saw up-thread someone who's hubby drove in the races. Something I always wanted to do.
The closest we got to the fair was over the hill. Could smell the food from there...har

Bloomsburg Fair..it's a State Fair...every Fall, around my birthday..so it was a special thing. Haven't been able to take my Mom there for over a decade..never can again, with her.
She loved the Funnel Cakes. I loved the French Fries with Vinegar. Childhood memories.
I'd give anything to take my Mom there again..she refused to go in a wheelchair..so it's been SO LONG since we've been there. I think the last time was the mid nineties.
There is so much more than Food..Granted..it's seeing what the locals put in...quilts, sewing, food, animals, 4H, and so much more. But as I look at it..it's spending time with family..enjoying the things that are in the community and seeing the things you might not be able to do..but are so enamoured with, and so much appreciating the arts, crafts, etc.
I hope you ALL enjoy your Fairs.

1 6oz bottle coca-cola, chilled

1 minute before serviing, open nuts & poor into chilled coco-cola. Sip at your leisure. I guess the salt and the bicarbonation produce endorphins. You cure your hunger, thirst and tastebud cravings all at once. :tonguewag: IOW, an energy drink b/f energy drinks were kewl.

I agree, the Fair fare, (pun definitely intended) is part of the experience. The main thing is not to let it become a habit of how you eat. I just heard of one fair that had deep fried butter... can you imagine?! That being ingested should cause a week of vegetarian eating and workouts, lol!
