i was shocked when he said smoking probably caused his cancer and yet he hasn't stopped :(
God bless patrick his wife. :rose:
I'm not too surprised. I used to do home health and you wouldn't believe some of the people that still smoked. Their conditions were horrible, they couldn't even walk from one room to the other because they couldn't breathe, yet they were sitting there smoking next to their oxygen tanks! :scared:

Currently battling pancreatic cancer.
That is so heartbreaking. Many people, especially those who are battling cancer can die if they get pneumonia.
My prayers are with him. May God see him through this.:rose:

My mom was dying of mestastized colon cancer spread to her lungs.
During her last week she asked for a cigarette, which she puffed once and choked. She made a comment that this addiction is hard to kick even in your final days.
Somewhat like dying of liver failure and still drink..........

I have worked in hospitals for many years and let me tell you the worst offenders are nurses and get this, respiratory therapists; i kid you not. does anyone remember the days when smoking was allowed on coronary care and intensive care units? I do; physicians were pretty bad offenders at that time.

Yep, that would be my mother. I'll never ever understand it.
And as much as I love Patrick Swayze, he's making excuses just like my mom. There are ways to curb the withdrawals.....patch and even a pill.
And even though the damage is done, it still takes a toll on your quality of life. My mom takes off the oxygen to smoke.....then complains she can't breathe. :cursing:

IMO, and everyone note the IMO, before you kill me too, i opine the following:
1. smoking will not affect the actual state of his cancer
2. smoking will affect his trying to stay alive no matter what, as in this case where he has contracted pneumonia.
3. i have had patients with lung cancer who smoked, even knowing they had lung cancer. it was advanced to the state that there was nothing to be done, and they saw no need to quit. it was very painful to watch them try to breath until they died, though.
4. if he said the smoking caused his cancer(which i saw posted below somewhere), it was because of the cases of beer required to go with the cigarettes. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0811061swayze1.html

well after watching the BW interview i realize why he hasn't totally stopped is because it would make him go through withdrawls and his dr said that could kill him faster then the smoking could at this point :(
I did not see his doctor say quiting could kill him faster. If working non stop and only getting 4 hrs of sleep a night throughout the time he was taking harsh chemo did not kill him I doubt withdrawal would have. For all the bragging he did about being strong and being able to withstand the pain of treatment, I would think he would take the same attitude about withdrawal. He is saying he can beat cancer but he can't beat cigarettes. I believe he is amazingly strong and if he wanted to, he could do it. The thing is..... he does not want to, and he should just admit that and quit making excuses for not even trying.
If he had stopped when he was diagnosed his lungs would be stronger today and maybe better be able to fight of this pneumonia. Totally his choice but I can't pity him here. Do hope he gets over this and keeps on living life to the fullest.

What you say is true, but in all fairness to those individuals, we didn't know what we know today. It's easy to point fingers, but it's not really fair. IMO JMO
I agree with you here....well partly.
I know that back when my parents began to smoke they did not know the dangers. Plus, I believe the cigarettes became more and more dangerous after they already became addicted. But, I do know that the dangers have become known to them after they were addicted and there is "help" out there to help them quit and I believe they just truly have not wanted to. What is fair? Is it fair to me to have to watch my father waste away because of his addiction? Is it fair to me to have to watch my mom struggle to breathe and not be able to move and bascially become a "living dead" person because her quality of life is gone? Is it fair to me that I have to go into a stinky home I can barely breathe in to visit my mom? Is it fair to me to have to deal with anger at the same time I have to deal with the grief of watching this addiction destroy my parents' lives? And then I have to deal with the guilt I feel for the anger I feel. Is it fair to me that my daughter has this same addiction and if she doesn't stop soon enough, I know she will go down this same road? Any addiction affects others....not just the person.
I know I touched a nerve with you and I'm sorry you don't seem to like me (even though you don't know me). You don't even know....maybe I DID have this addiction and DID quit. You assume I never knew the addiction.
I just know I love the people in my life who are killing themselves with cigarettes and I feel so helpless and angry at times about it. I love Patrick Swayze and believe the smoking COULD NOT help his current illness. I so wish he would have sought help to quit. I didn't see the interview, so maybe he did. There is help out there and many others have managed to quit and I just think he could have it "in him" to quit too. I just wish he could/would have so he could have the best quality of life possible with what he's got left. It's not about judgement...it's about caring for the person.

you might want to watch the interview again. he said his dr told him withdrawls would be too rough on him and might kill him.
IMO you sound like you really don't like PS much.........
I did not see his doctor say quiting might kill him. Did you see his doctor say that?
I don't know PS well enough to say if I like him or not. I like his acting, I like that he is standing up to cancer and fighting. I wish he could have stood up to cigarettes and stamped them out of his life.

It's a really difficult situation. Yes, it would be wise for him to quit smoking, but he believes (as I do) in quality of life, not simply quantity of life. He's said, if he finds out he has any chance of living outside of 5 minutes, he will attempt putting them down. Since he's addicted it's my guess, he just doesn't want to deal with withdraw along with everything else he's forced to deal with.
I would probably feel much the same way. For anyone who has never been a smoker, I'm not sure you know how difficult it is to quit. While some have given us the "411" into their own families refusal to quite smoking while facing severe health consequences, I think it goes to show just how difficult of an addition it really is. My own mother had throat cancer and went thru a Tracheostomy operation TWICE (it came back or they didn't get it all) in which with the combined surgeries; one on each side of the neck, she had her throat literally sliced from ear to ear and had to wear a trach. After all this, she put her finger over the hole in the trach and continued smoking. Not once did I call her stupid or even think as much. Probably because I understand the addition and how difficult it is to overcome.
Turning the oxygen off to have a smoke screams to me how difficult it is to give them up.

Oh, and I'm not going to kill you, you're entitled to your opinion like everyone else.
To address this issue though, he never said that smoking caused his cancer. He simply said, it's quite possible that it may have played a part. I don't think there is anyway of proving what part smoking may have played, and he at least acknowledged that those who smoke are more likely to develop this form (as well as other forms) of cancer.

I just read this again and see how someone may interpret what I said as if I'm implying others may not know how difficult it is to quit smoking. I never meant to imply any such thing. I wouldn't have the foggiest idea of who has smoked, still smokes, or who has quit smoking. I was only speaking in generic forms with all of the above. I wasn't speaking of anyone or any poster in particular.

for #3, if these patients had quit smoking would it only prolong the amount of time they lived in such a condition that it was as you stated, too painful to watch them, or would they die quicker or the same either way as the cancer progressed?
I think even if I had quit smoking, I may take it up again if I had a terminal illness and knew I was going to die

[QUOTE=forensicpsy;12648865]Of course you're right.
If he chooses to continue to smoke now, so be it.
--------------------------------------
Many professionals concur that an addiction to nicotine is more difficult to kick than heroin. I wish that I had never started smoking. But, telling someone to quit, is like someone who has never suffered from clinical depression tellling a clically depressed person to just get over it and have some fun. If you have not been there it seems so easy to give advice, or chastise. If my medical insurance allowed payment for a three month program of inpatient care for detox, therapy, and an environment where I would not be able to have access to cigarettes, I would jump on it. Unfortunately, when I try to do it on my own, no matter what method I use (patches, gum, weening, etc.) I reach a point where I feel that I am about to lose my mind and might hurt myself. So, I light up a cigarette, and I can function again. I am surprised, with all of the class action suits against the tobacco companies for illness, that there hasn't been a class action suit for those who want to quit, and are not able to unless they go to an inpatient detox/drug treatment facility. After all, it has been proven that the tobacco companies lied, saying that there was no proof that nicotine is addictive. But, I guess that lawyers who take on class action suits want monetary settlements which they get a big chunk of, rather than professional, managed care to help cure the addiction of their clients. As for PS, remember, he started dancing at a young age. Many professional dancers smoke profusely. Some of the biggest ballet stars were seldom seen without a cigarette when they were not on stage. So, PS became addicted to nicotine at very young age. I can understand how difficult, with the added pressure of his illness, how giving up smoking might seem like an impossiblity. Sure, there will be people who will respond that they were able to give up smoking. But, as well as the addiction to nicotine, there are many other reasons why some people cannot give up the habit. PS has always seemed like a decent man to me. His smoking does not deserve some of the harsh comments that I have read here. I would not wish such a painful illness, with a negative prognosis on anyone...
I quit smoking for 10yrs and started smoking again after some deaths in my family. Stupid yes, better than getting addicted to drugs yes.
I cough now, so I know it's not good for me, I'm able to concentrate better and get more done than when I didn't smoke. It doesn't make sense, I know, but it's like my crutch in life and gives me something to look forward to after I've accomplished something.
I've been on both sides and I'm back on the smoking side, so I get Patrick's illogical logic.

None of you are living with the stress of what PS is living. Nor do any of you understand what the withdrawal would do to him at this point. His doctors know best.
I have a friend who has clinical depression and wanted to quit smoking. His doctor told him no, not until his meds were working for a substantial amount of time could he even consider it.
No update on his health. Just ran across this (Patrick and his wife Lisa)-thought you might enjoy:

Swayze: I Haven't Quit Treatment
http://www.newser.com/story/49378/swayze-i-havent-quit-treatment.html
Swayze Fires Back at 'Negative' Tabloids
Patrick Swayze is sick of reading tabloid stories claiming he's losing his battle with pancreatic cancer, he tells Access Hollywood. The Beast star says that rather than being at death's door, he is responding well to a new course of chemotherapy, and he has plenty of positive things in his life to focus on—including a new puppy.

I really admire Patrick for his courageous fight against this horrible disease.
I lost an Uncle to pancreatic cancer and he did not last 4 months. Awful and painful on the patient and the family.
My best friend lost her fight with Hodgkins after almost 5 years. She died January 1st last year.
At some point you reach the stage of quality versus quantity of life and I truly believe that is an individual choice.
God Bless you Patrick.

I was told the same thing a few years ago when I wanted to stop of course no doctor will tell you to not stop smoking but they will tell you it could be better to wait especially in treatment's on stress anxiety and depression but I guess at this point it does not matter we have lost Patrick Swayze today:rose::crying:

In an interview with ABC's Barbara Walters in January, Swayze said his work on that show was exhausting, requiring 12 hour workdays in Chicago, Illinois, doing his own stunts. But he said the show's character "just felt right for my soul."
"If I leave this Earth, I want to leave this Earth just knowing I've tried to give something back and tried to do something worthwhile with myself," Swayze told Walters, when asked why he decided to do the show. "And that keeps me going, that gets me up in the morning. My work ... is my legacy."
I will never forget this interview he was so real and he will be missed

Oh..My. I loved him..yes in Dirty Dancing..yes in Ghost..but in his many other productions as well. What a talented man.
I was hoping he would get through this. He DID look good, as others have said..last time I "saw" him.
So many talented and "nice" people..leave this earth waaay too soon. If he had skeletons in his closet, I didn't know of them, nor would I care. He was an amazing dancer..good actor..and apparently a wonderful "family man". So so sad.
What a LOSS.
RIP...May you be dancing in Heaven, Patrick, as we write here. Sympathies to his entire family and friends.

Never did we hear anything bad about Patrick or his marriage...He was a true American man...talented, passionate, and married the love of his life...(that btw, the tabloids never had any 'pal' reporting on disharmony)
Let us all say a special prayer for his beloved Lisa tonight...she I am sure is dealing with a mixture of relief that his pain is over, grief because her best friend has move to the next existence, and that emptiness that all of us feel when a loved one is lost.

I adore North and South...have the collector's edition...as well as Road house, Next of Kin, and other greats of Patrick.
I can't say enough about a man that was not only a celebrity due to his efforts, but also due to his 'less sung acts' those of kindness to those in need, to his private life, that actually was private, and to his desire to fight cancer with the dignity and the class that defined him.
An American role model, one to be proud of.

That is the beauty of real respect as well as message board friendship..we can disagree on this or that...but the bottom line is that the respect and friendship always offers a common bond of community.
In some ways it is sad, in others it is beautiful that in a tragic event we find the very human desire to comfort one another..even if we did not have a real relationship with those lost.
That is the definition of humanity..and no matter how angry we get with each other at times that bond will never be destroyed.
It is at times of death we consider our own lives, our own choices and how we will be remembered, in a way, we are all celebrities, because we are known by those that otherwise we would never know.
I know I sound corny, but with the death of Patrick Swayze it made me remember some dear posters, those that made me angry, at times, happy other times, or just 'Yeah, they are on my side' at other times..but IMO, Patrick was just like us, a real person, not out of reach..not a pompous star...just a guy, someone that could be a neighbor...
Okay, I am too emotional...let me just put on record...at times I may fight with some of you..but never do I wish harm to any of you (you being posters) I honor and respect all of you.
