SAN ANTONIO — The former stepfather of a murdered 12-year-old Vermont girl was sentenced Friday to more than 16 years in prison on child pornography charges.
U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez sentenced Raymond Gagnon in San Antonio to 16 years and eight months in federal prison.
Gagnon expressed grief and remorse in accepting the sentence.

The FBI found child pornography while searching Gagnon's San Antonio home after his former stepdaughter, Brooke Bennett, disappeared in Vermont last summer.
Gagnon had been married to Brooke's mother for four years before the couple separated in 2004.

In the plea agreement, Gagnon admitted to having hundreds of images and video files of prepubescent children engaged in sexually explicit conduct, including sexual acts with adults. Gagnon collected many of the images when he was living in Alabama, before moving to Texas, according to the document. He faces additional charges of possession of child pornography in Alabama.

I pray that Alabama gives him long than 16 years. He deserves it!

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday they will seek the death penalty in the case of Michael Jacques, the Randolph man charged with kidnapping, drugging, raping and killing his 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett last summer.


The decision, disclosed in a “Notice of Intent to Seek a Sentence of Death” filed at federal court in Burlington, comes 13 months after Brooke’s disappearance and death gripped the attention of Vermonters and led to reform of the state’s sex offender laws.

Jacques is accused of plotting Brooke’s death for a month, persuading another girl who he had repeatedly molested to help him lure Brooke to his home and then concocting an elaborate scheme to make it look like Brooke had run away to meet someone.

Her disappearance June 25, 2008, triggered a massive search by police and federal agents. Her body was found a week later covered over with dirt in the woods a mile from Jacques’ home.

“Jacques committed the offense ... in an especially heinous, cruel and depraved manner, in that it involved torture or serious physical abuse to the victim,” federal prosecutors wrote in the notice filed with the court.

According to a statement released by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Burlington, the decision to seek the death penalty was made by Attorney General Eric Holder on Aug. 14.

Members of Brooke’s family said they were informed of Holder’s decision in a meeting at Coffin’s office Tuesday morning.

“I don’t feel free to comment,” said Cassandra Adams, Brooke’s mother. “It’s a lot to take in right now.” Efforts to reach Brooke’s father, James Bennett, were unsuccessful.

He wasn't sentenced for that. The 16 years was for the porn. He still faces charges regarding the missing safe, tampering with evidence, obstruction, etc.

Right, I understand that but why would they not seek charges against him if he engaged in a sexual act with a minor? That is what I don't get.

Thanks for the updates. I followed this case when it was going on, but then it seemed to drop off the radar. Do you know if they are going to hold the other girl accountable at all for luring Brooke into that situation?

I haven't heard about that. I would think they probably would not since J had been molesting her since she was 8.

I also followed this case from the beginning, right after they found her is when IS got hacked, remember?

Sadly when IS was fixed, was the beginning of the Anthony Saga.

So, is the uncle the mom's brother, or the dad's? I know the men have different last names, but they could be half-brothers.

What was his purpose in plotting her murder for a month? Did she have some info she was threatening to go to LE or her mom with? (I remember reading about the case early on, but like you say, it was kind of derailed by the Caylee Anthony case, so missed out on a lot of things.) TIA
