If you haven't been blessed to hear or see this video then do so now. Apparently this woman who is almost 48, unemployed, lives alone with her cat Pebbles, never been married and never been kissed went on this show Britains Got Talent and just blew everyone away. People were laughing and rolling their eyes when she first come out but in the end it was she that got the last laugh. The audience gave a standing ovation during the song. To see the judges reaction and especially Simon who I can't normally stand with this look of utter shock is truly a good sight to see. She sings "I Dreamed A Dream" from Les Miserables. If you don't know the words go online and look them up. Susan's dream has come true I am sure of it. Here is the link Susan Boyle (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lp0IWv8QZY).

This is so inspiring! I love seeing Simon's eyebrows go up - and then he even smiles. I've watched it more than several times by now and have to grab a tissue each time. Her voice is incredible. The music in the background at the end during the interviews adds a nice touch (French horns are my favorite). I hope this woman finds her dream.

I can't stop listening to her, amazing voice. A beautiful person!!!!!!!!

Guess Simon finally learned never judge a book by it's cover, finally.

I've listened to this at least a dozen times. The words paired with her noting that she'd never been married, or kissed for that matter. And, that she was currently unemployed just touched me. It was the perfect song, with the perfect delivery.

I hope every single dream she has ever dreamed comes true!

I read the story on cnn and came her to post the video. I have goosebumps. It takes forever for me to download youtube (dial up) so i rarely do no matter how good its meant to be, but from the comments i had to.

I will be seriously disappointed if she doesn't get a professional career because i so want to buy a CD of hers.

I don't know paul potts, the only one i can compare her to is perhaps Judy Garland..but she might be better. It was a treat to watch the judges mouths open in shock. Simon Cowells eyes went from bored cynical to pop eyed lol.

Anyone who appreciates wonderment and miracles should watch the video. It will leave a smile on your face for the rest of the day.

eta does anyone know if there are some home videos singing or anything of hers posted? I keep replaying it but would love to hear more songs.

i just rewatched it this time to pay attention to the judges faces.

I have never ever seen Simon Cowell look like he was in heaven before. every time they went to his face, it was like he was watching an angel, complete contentment.

Piers..he choked back a tear or two as did the woman judge.

not often you see the judges in such amazement especially Simon!

Here is a piece on her by the shows site: She is so funny too! http://talent.itv.com/news/story/item_100074.htm

And Susan isn’t worried that the showbiz life would send her off the rails like so many stressed-out stars before her. She laughs, “It’s a challenge. Life is a challenge sometimes but this is different. And I like to test myself”

“If it all gets too much and they lock me up, I want a great big straight jacket with spots on it. A pink one…”

“…And a big zip on the back so I can escape!”, she i

I saw this too. Brought tears to my eyes when she sang.
I really wish her all the best and and great success. I hope that indeed she becomes as well known as the singer she mentioned. With a voice like that she deserves it, and the rest of us would only be lifted up all the more with hearing this treasure of a woman sing professionally.
Love her personality too, completely open, witty, and comfortable with herself. She seems like a great person.

ABSOLUTELY, VC2...

Humour...gotta have it go get through life..

She has it... She was so "funny" in responding to Simon...

I have faith in her...(like I had faith in the PS jury) and I did in Paul Potts..but there is something "extra" in her...I expect to see her in live theatre...Elaine Paige...?? She beat her out...and she beat out Judy Garland and even the one I first thought of in appearance (not voice) ...Kathy Bates (not just the looks, I think...but the stage presence too??) Mae West...I know...not a singer..but you put all those together? You've got SUSAN BOYLE, IMO.

ROCK SUSAN....

I'm one of your FAVOURITE fans...

My Husband and I are MEZMERIZED by her performance.

I cant stop watching it and always cry tears of happiness for her. From what I have read this lady cared for her Mother for years, was bullied and ridiculed in school, bought her dress in a second hand shop for this performace and took 3 buses to get to Brinton's Got Talent. She was snickered at and people rolled their eyes in the audience when she said she wanted to sing like Elaine Paige.

Man did she make them look SHALLOW!

I hope she makes MILLIONS! She deserves it. I am already planning to buy any cd she puts out, cause I am sure she will have a recording contract VERY SOON.

Expectations and Perceptions. Susan Boyle taught me something. What a gorgeous voice, that brought on happy tears.

I think she has made many people realize that opera/show music is worth listening to. I am a country music/oldies girl except for the 3 tenors - irish and italian lol.

I have watched it 8 times since i first posted here. Contessa Brewer on msnbc ticked me off with her asking diff ppl if really its bc she was not a young beautiful woman that made it so spectacular, if she had been it wouldn't be such a hit.

The last time i watched i realized the woman judge knows the song intimately, just before the crescendo - i think thats what it is called, when the voice goes up and up in range and power - she had her hands clasped then she raised one finger, just like you might if you were conducting in your mind to say "time to reach for it in the next section" and as soon as Susan did, with such control, total power...she stood up and clapped. Now i am replaying it just to listen to the amazing control.

they may as well give up the rest of the contest. It wouldn't surprise me if each of those judges contacted someone in the music world within 24 hours telling them to listen to the clip. How in HADES did she stay buried in a little village for 47 years?

bah i have never posted so much on a stupid song :blushing: i sound like an MJ fan lmao. btw, the link i posted, the person who put up that youtube has a note on it to subscribe to him or put him as friend and he will email with the way to vote for her from anywhere in the world. This was the first audition then she goes to semifinals and finals where the viewers make the decision. I also liked how he started it, showing buckingham palace and the caption "Here is a fairy tale that Disney missed" or some such.

what is her voice called? contralto tenor or ?

He was STUPEFIED. i giggle every time i see his face go from "yeah right" to "omg" Especially since she was so cheeky with him, waggling her hips at him with the "and thats just one side of me" when he rolled his eyes at her age.

Brian Williams was on some show today talking about it. Apparently he had it on his newscast last night. Said there have been 9 million hits so far on youtube. He sent it to all his family and friends and said one tough VP at NBC, a woman, confessed to watching it five times and crying each time. I love uplifting stuff like this, especially after all the bad crime news we have had......

Gem is not the word. She has done a great deal of good for that genre of music too. I never expected to be looking for mp3's of les miserable

what gets me..she must be self trained or she would have moved up the ranks. Yet the article on perez hilton about the "sensation" said it so well.. she has poise. Her hand movements, her comfort level with the judges and audicence were all professional level.

I haven't downloaded the video of potts yet, but i think you mean Nessun Dorma. "no one sleeps" Pavarotti made it close to his theme song, i know so little about opera but that song i know. It is beautiful. LOL there are only two pieces of that sort of music i recognize the names or sound of immediately, that one and of course Bolero. The sexiest song ever even though it has no lyrics.

Yeah..what a musician I am, huh? It is Nessun Dorma....Pavarotti....

Ravel's Bolero..another amazing piece.

This woman, Susan Boyle, couldnt' have chosen a better piece to sing. She is AMAZING. I love Paul Potts too...that was the Nessun Dorma piece...and I still see Cher..in Moonstruck when I hear that piece..or PERFORM them...I've performed the opera and Les Miserables..there is nothing like that music...I'd get "chills" in the Pit Orchestra. Susan Boyle would have put me over the tops. I've never heard anything like her...other than Sandra Phillips...if anyone knows her..amazing..in Raisin and many other Broadway shows.

VC, I missed that article. Thank you for posting it.

I didn't post it, someone else did, i just commented and quoted.

However here is a post: Piers Morgan one of the 3 judges has a blog. He posted his views on the first show and susan of course.

I can remember the moment she first opened her lips perfectly. We were at a big theatre in Glasgow, 3000 people were laughing their heads off, Simon and Amanda were stifling a chuckle, and then she started to sing.

And I can honestly say it was one of the most extraordinary moments in my perhaps equally unlikely career as a talent show judge.

Because Susan Boyle is not just a good singer, she’s a fantastic singer. Someone whose stunning range, tone and delivery is worthy of comparison to anyone – Elaine Paige included.

As I watched her performance back again last night, I texted Simon in Hollywood: ‘My god, Susan was even better than I remembered – she’s unbelievable.’ He agreed, and I could almost feel his beady little eyes going ‘KERCHING!’ down the line from his new Beverly Hills mansion

He also has a behind the scenes bit about Simon Cowell when another act was on that night that had me burst out laughing:

And as for the magnificent Fabia’s cleavage-bursting disco-dancing, words, temporarily, fail me. I didn’t know whether to laugh, cry, or run to the Britain’s Got Talent security team for protection. What you didn’t see on TV last night, by the way, was Mr Cowell running up on stage and sticking one of her nipple tassles back on. Let’s just say his grin was even bigger than it usually is…

I just watched the Paul Potts video. There is no comparison imo. He was great, Susan Boyle was wondrous. You could see it in the judges too, impressed..loving him, but there wasn't that visceral reaction you got with her. He was professional operatic level. She is that and beyond.

Excerpt:
" Susan went on the talent contest to fulfil a fervent wish of her late mother Bridget, who died in 2007.
She revealed: "Mum loved the show and used to tell me I should put my name down and that I'd win it if I did.
"But I never thought I was good enough. It was only after she died that I plucked up the courage to enter."
(Bolded by me)

She was tormented terribly as a child.....and yet she retains a wonderful sense of spirit.

The susan boyle fact file

some excerpts:

• Susan was one of nine siblings, and is devoutly Catholic. Reports suggest that she received a round of applause entering her local church the day after the show aired.

• She suffered a mild form of brain damage at birth.

• Since the death of her mother she’s lived alone in the family home, with only her cat Pebbles for company.

• Before now she has only ever sung in local choirs and at karaoke, despite singing since 12.

• She says she was picked on as a child, and neighbours say that even now that some of the local children picked on her.

• It is rumoured that she will be offered a record deal by Simon Cowell regardless of whether she wins Britain's Got Talent or not.

• Her favourite drink at the local bar is apparently a simple glass of lemonade.

There are a couple of other great quotes including one where she says society is to quick to judge on looks and maybe she will teach a lesson or set an example.

Also she thinks her age and life experience are her biggest assets.

http://entertainment.stv.tv/home/88485-britains-got-talent-the-susan-boyle-fact-file/

one story i loved, cant remember the link is that the kids in her village stop and congratulate her now. This is a woman who as picked on not just as a child but also an adult by the very same age of children.

She is amazing. Her whole life story, including mild brain damage at birth.

I wish her mom was here to see it too but i am sure she is an angel on her shoulder.

Since i had never listened to les miserables before or every heard of Elaine Paige, i just downloaded the mp3 of her version of the song. All i can say is that Susan Boyle is far far better. Susan has the power in her voice that Elaine does not. The only way i can describe it is my search for the perfect version of Amazing Grace. From Mahalia Jackson to Frank Patterson, Helmut Lotti brings the power of the song to my soul and i am still looking for more. (ff susan gives you goose bumps then find his version of amazing grace, it will make your hair stand on end)

Elaine Paige is a tinny voice to Susan Boyle's. I don't know opera but i know what i like. I like pavarotti in a couple of songs. I love the male tenors. "will ye go lassie" makes me want to dance a jig. Michael Flatley may be a *&()_ as a man but omg what a dancer and he makes music come alive. I don't care that he has to have sex b4 every performance lol. I watched the live 3 tenors in Rome at the world soccer cup special and melted. I guess what i am saying in this whole paragraph is i know a voice that is exceptional and i can compare it to the best even though i have no real knowledge. Like ppl who say they don't know what porn is but they know when they see it. I was blown away when i listened to elaine paige's version of I Dreamed a Dream. Blown away because it was a kindergarten level compared to Susan. Light, airy, breathy like someone who is singing from the top half of her lungs. Not powerful and emotional. Elaine will be wishing she could sing as well as susan can. Having gone through a shocking breathing illness i really feel the difference in talking/singing from the depths or the top half.

Rumor is that Simon Cowell has decided to sign her to a record deal whatever the result of the show. That is one heck of a statement. I will never forget his face going from bored to his eyebrows up in his hair with shock. LOL i still laugh at Piers Morgan saying that he could see Simon's beady eyes going "KERCHING" when he texted him after seeing the show on tv (i guess after all the time between live and shown) and said that unless he is an aardvark that susan will be selling a lot of records.

uh oh jayne. If you are one of her biggest fans you better not compare them :tonguewag:

Now she hopes her TV success will help her find love - and has even set her sights on panelist Piers.

She said: "Appearance is everything in this industry and I'm happy with the way I look. But don't compare me to Paul Potts... I'm much better-looking than that. And I've got my eye on Piers. He's gorgeous.

"I remember when America's Got Talent first came on and I saw him and thought, 'He looks really nice, I wonder who he is?'

"I like his face. I was too embarrassed to tell him how I felt when I was at my audition but I had my hair curled especially for the show and wore a dress I'd bought a few months back for my nephew's wedding.

"I like Simon Cowell, too. He is beautiful but he's the boss. I've got too much respect for him to have feelings like that.

I have the same wish. Simon Cowell has already signed her up for his Sony bgm label. Well according to Susan they are "in talks" which from her comments about wanting to work for him in the same interview tells me its a done deal.

I suspect he will time it to go with the final, which i expect her to win. The week after anyway.

I have been looking at the hosts, ant and dec. Obviously the judges had not heard her before but the two hosts must have seen the regional that she won. LOL i wonder how much chuckling they must have done between them, knowing that she would knock the 3 off their seats before her audition. You could tell they knew, partly because of all the people she was one chosen for a preview interview and their lack of shock but complete enjoyment when they said "you didn't expect that did you?" as she started into the song :D

Just beautiful!

I'm also impressed by how Simon, Piers and the female judge (don't know her name) sit there and act like civil human beings.
I'm sick to death of Paula acting like a drunken groupie, and all the arguing and childish behavior on AI.

I just listened and it was truly amazing. To think this woman is 47 years old and could have forgotten all of the hard work she was doing and caring for her mother, but she didn't. Just a wonderful story.

God gave her a glorious gift and we should thank her for sharing it with us.

No one is laughing any more, Susan.

Entertainment weekly has the biggest whiny buzz kill of the story. I think someone is tone deaf:

She has a decent voice, sure. But let's not get carried away. She's no LuPone, and her talent is only really shocking if you've already counted her out as a squawker on account of her granny hairdo and pre-fame Julia Roberts eyebrows. Once the element of surprise is gone, we're all going to be stuck with the fact that she's a capable, but by no means extraordinary singer. And is that really worth all the fuss?

In response to the article above, someone posted the Producer of Les Miserables reaction to Susan:

In a press statement, producer Cameron Mackintosh has echoed the comments of judges Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan and Amanda Holden, saying, "Just like the judges and audience I was gob-smacked by the emotional powerhouse performance of Susan Boyle's show stopping rendition of 'I Dreamed a Dream.' Vocally it is one of the best versions of the song I've ever heard. Touching, thrilling and uplifting. I do hope she gets to sing it for the Queen.

I have watched this clip so many times.. she is pure joy.. her excitement, her voice.. is just amazing.. what a gift.. I probably will watch it many more times. Wonder if our news networks here will bring her over for a interview... I would love to see Larry King interview her.

I read this on CNN this morning.. will leave the link.. but going to paste Larry's comments... I think he fell in love... lol.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/TV/04/16/susan.boyle.simon.cowell/index.html

Larry wanted to offer Boyle a kiss.

"I have just heard you sing for the first time -- thanks to CNN -- and I must tell you this: You are a fabulous talent, simply amazing to me that no one took advantage of your voice and passion up until now. I am a happily married man, but if I were not, and if I was in the audience, I can guarantee you that I would ask for a kiss, and if you were gracious enough to indulge me, well that would have been one of the great highlights of my life. Looking forward to the first of many albums."

I'm assuming of course they meant Larry King...

Can't wait to hear her again... utterly amazing.. and Simon's face was priceless.

Right now i am shaking with rage at TMZ. I can't even bring myself to post the link, but just google Susan Boyle, TMZ and the word Support. Make sure children are not watching when you open the page.

They need every advertiser on their page called. So far out of the bounds of human decency to a woman who does not deserve it. They need to be hit in the pocket book. The only thing i can remotely compare it to is when BOR said that shawn hornbeck liked part of being a captive to a sex predator.

I hope Simon Cowell has the decency to help keep at bay the vile vultures of the entertainment industry. Watching her after the panel, it was obvious Susan Boyle was not comprehending.

I never thought i would say "thank goodness for simon cowell" but with him signing her to his label she will be kept safe from the vultures. He has the clout and the ability to decimate them if needed. my biggest worry was that some slick talking agent would sign her up before she knew what was what.
Especially with her mild brain damage, she was ripe for plucking by one. Not that she is stupid, just would be a lot for anyone let alone someone with a bit of handicap.

What??? isn't Susan Boyle's voice?

Her voice is unique. I've heard a lot of them...Elaine Paige included.

She was singing..it wasn't lipsinc...it was real. If we've been duped..then we have, but I do not believe it at all.

Paul Potts wasn't a dupe...he was/is real. I will feel very much "taken aback" if Susan isn't Susan. I think the woman is fabulous. I believe it is her singing...I believe she deserves all she can have in life and a singing career.

I think people are jealous and they are trying to "smear her"...that's what I think...just like the children who bullied her.

But...I could be wrong...but don't think so...not this time.

Please do inquiring minds want to know if it's her.....

Regarding the Cry Me A River audio: The comments I read there have to do with technicalities, saying that there is a difference in timber, tone, pronunciation etc. That Susan's voice, which is basically untrained (but superb), has a deeper timber .
The voice in the recording is clear and sharp with a different vocal pattern, the vibrato is faster than Susan's, and the pronunciation is typical of Americans, and not from GB or Scotland. Plus the recording is sound studio quality. That she was 10 years younger when it was recorded doesn't matter, certain patterns don't change. Pavarotti's vocal pattern for example did not change over the years, it was always recognizable.

Others are arguing that Susan (from listening to her at the BGT show) would be able to mimic linguistic patterns, has a sophisticated sense of style, and that she has the same sensibility to phrasing and text. They believe it's the same singer.

I just don't know. I'm not an expert on the intricacies of voice like these people.
Anyway that's the gist of what was discussed.

The source of the audio recording did come from a newspaper, so it appears legitimate.

We will find out though since Susan Boyle will no doubt be giving interviews, as already is planned, and no doubt the topic will arise. She will either corroborate it or not.

I'm not sure either, but not because of the song. I do think this is a song she might choose to sing. As cheerful and open as Susan is today, I would bet that she is well acquainted with "crying." her spokes man has confirmed it this morning.

the editor of a paper in a tiny council town got the idea to use unknowns in a cd for charity and i think it is studio sound...that they had at least a studio.

the difference in voice? i think she has the kind of talent than can cover a number of ranges, and this is not a belting song, she treated it like a woman feeling exactly what the lyrics said...a young woman.

Before you think this is condescending of Piers Morgan, it is in response to Susan's comments about him:

And talking of treats, I picked up today’s newspapers to discover one of my own. Susan Boyle, a spinster who has never been kissed, has named me as the man she wants to end this unfortunate situation with.

‘Piers is gorgeous,’ she cooed, ‘I remember when he first came on America’s Got Talent and I thinking, ‘He looks really nice, I wonder who he is? I was too embarrassed to tell him how I felt when I was at my audition but I had my hair curled especially for the show. Up until now I have never met the right man but maybe that will change now I have met Piers. He’s a very handsome man. It is quite hard to choose between Piers and Simon because they’re both lovely but I think it would definitely be Piers.”
http://www.officialpiersmorgan.com/2009/04/14/britains-got-talent-episode-1/
video:
"I have decided to extend an invitation to Susan to take her out for a meal to a very romantic restaurant with some roses and some fine wines and some glamorous waiters to offer her the chance to break her kissing duck," Morgan said. "Susan, if you are watching, I am available."

http://www.officialpiersmorgan.com/2009/04/16/piers-puckers-up/

I hope she has the date of her dreams, and both have a wonderful time. I chuckled at how his girlfriend was nonplussed that she perferred piers to simon. She better because of you read the comments in both his blog and under his video message sounds like the public is warning him to be a gentleman and will tear him to shreds if it is not a special night for her.

Amanda Holden says susan does not need a big makeover. Agree"

But, Amanda Holden told the Daily Mirror that she will do her best to stop Susan from being "spoiled" by a celebrity makeover.

Amanda said: "I won't let Simon Cowell take her to his dentist and I certainly won't let her near his hairdresser.

"She needs to stay exactly as she is because that's the reason we love her. She just looks like anybody who could live on your street.

"The minute we turn her into a glamour-puss is when it's spoilt. That can perhaps come later when she's signed the album deal and conquered America.
http://programmes.stv.tv/news-gossip/88978-makeover-would-spoil-britains-got-talent-star-susan-boyle-says-amanda-holden/

Sounds like all the judges are going to take her under their wing, sSimon would be the best for a recording deal since he has the power to ensure the best and smartest treatment of her. Piers and Amanda will hold his feet to the fire to be sure she isn't used by stupid ideas of how she should appear.

YW! after listening to Elaine Paiges version of I dreamed a dream, i thought it was far less than Susans, partly because she did not have the deep timber of hers..it was all sung as one style of voice and made the song less powerful.

After listening to cry me a river, it struck me ath Susan is more than we just heard in the audition...far more talent than we know. Her rendition of cry me a river is what i would have expected from Elaine Paige, the higher voice style that would still sound much like she did in "i dreamed a dream".

Susan is a voice that can go anywhere. She can reach levels often seen more in tenors and then carry a song as if she was a pure alto with no deep timber at all and it sounds like two completely different voices. She is fantastic. I understand your first reaction because it just is not normal for a singer to be able to switch from one complete vocal style to another. I don't mean song style, i mean vocal. I know she is a musical theater style not opera, but a comparison would be Pavarotti trying to sing cry me a river and sound as Susan did. Just not going to happen. Would be a great version but in his own style, his voice is not an alto that can turn into a sweet voice of a young girl. (apart from the obvious male voice vs female, i just dont know a woman star well known enough to use as the example)

Judges Apologize to Susan Boyle:

Morgan said, "I would just like to apologize to Susan Boyle, because I think it's long overdue, because, from the clip, you know, (millions of) people could see that Simon Cowell (the third judge that night -- he of "American Idol" fame) and I -- we don't have the best reputations, I think, for courtesy in America. I think we owe her on apology because it was an amazing performance. As I said, we were all laughing at her when she started, and by the end, the last laugh was on her."

I've listened to that clip so many times and can't get enough of it. It is just such a shame that she has not been "discovered" before now. She is just an amazing natural talent, and a truly lovely and authentic person.

Speaking of eyebrows, I remember reading many years ago that Ingrid Bergman refused eyebrow shaping and make up when she arrived in Hollywood. The studios didn't like her natural look. Kudos to Whoopi (The View link posted upthread) and Amanda for their perspective. We need some REAL people to admire, not plastic, over-done makeovers.

I am in AWE of Susan Boyle. This morning on national TV (don't remember the channel..but I think it may have been with Diane Sawyer?) She was "interviewed"...it appears the voice from NY (or wherever) doesn't get to Scotland for a few seconds..those few seconds of dead silence when Susan was asked a question...I was thinking..Oh, no...she doesn't know what to say. NOPE..my guess is that she heard the questions seconds after we did...like pushing a key on an organ. Very glad to hear how Amanda said "nooooo makeover" (at least not yet). Good for Simon and Piers....they obviously recognize not just raw talent, but raw humanness and humility. (I was a bit disappointed in Potts' words about Susan...oh, they were kind and congratulatory, but figuring how he came up from where he started to be a millionnaire, I just wish he'd have been a bit more "awestruck" by Susan...not probably meant to be "competitive" but it just seemed that way. Still very very much like/adore Paul Potts, too. But Susan? I think she wowed those judges, and the audiences everywhere (LOOK at the number of "hits" on YouTube in just a few days!) I wonder what other gems she'll choose to sing. Hopefully, this one again...and there are so many other beautiful Broadway tunes that her wide range in vocals could WOW them again. e.g.: Candide, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Oliver, Cats, Pippin (I know it's an old one...but there are some GREAT songs in that, if anyone remembers!) Even opera. I see her with the vocal qualities of Julie Andrews...hmmm..song from Camelot?

WOW WOW WOW....I need to quit gushing about her and get back to my business!

Go Susan...

Are you talking about Paul Potts? Did he say something?

Well here Potts praises her enthusiastically when they were both on air.

Also, ofcourse now she's flooded by mens' offers who now think she's the cat's pyjamas. I think, given her reactions, she has good common sense not to be taken in by the con men and exploiters, which has had me a bit worried.

I think the only one she will take up is Piers Morgan's offer of dinner and a kiss. Given that she is the one who said she wanted him to give her one first.
Even if she doesn't, she will always keep the video of his invitation.

I can't watch the msnbc video :( it keeps saying its not allowed due to usage restrictions, i guess bc i am in canada. If anyone can find it on youtube please post it, i so want to watch the complete clip of her song on msnbc that starts with "send up a flare". I think the title is different than that.

Also a great interview with Piers, including the info that even though simon is trying to dial back expectations it is a one horse race, that last night he told Piers that he had never seen anything like it in his career. Ever!

JI just saw her video for the umpteenth time, and I thought "yeah, opera...that could be her thing". Wouldn't mind seeing her doing something from Camelot, but better yet, how about a real life version of the Von Trapp family of The Sound of Music fame.

I'm not an easy cryer, but every time I watch her performance, tears roll down my face. I'm usually for the underdog, and I think she's finished with her underdog status. She's one of those people who has a voice that, imo, people would want to listen to no matter what her measurements are. She's beautiful to my eyes and ears.

"they called me susan simple" An indepth terrific article on her.

She adopted eccentric habits such as keeping money in an empty whisky bottle and cheerfully allowed herself to be teased by the local children on the rare occasions she ventured out of her pebbledash-fronted terrace house.

They called her Susie Bong, or Susie Simple. This week Susie Simple went global.

It all began last Saturday when her rendition of I Dreamed A Dream, from the musical Les Miserables, was screened on the launch of the third series of ITV's Britain's Got Talent.

I'm so "stuck" on this woman's talent...

yes...Von Trapp Singers...something from the movie? Camelot?

I could see her putting Sarah Brighton in the same category as Elaine Paige (and I love both of them...no dis to them at all)....i.e. Susan can UpStage them! Phantom of the Opera (All I ask of you (for personal reasons...RIP Steve)...would love to hear her sing it, I believe she can "do it" amazingly. Her lower voice is even stronger, although I do love Sarah.

Candide (Glitter and be Gay? She just may have that upper range and vibratro...would love to hear it, if so...I do think she has the range..) (The most difficult score I've ever read)

West Side Story (Tonight, tough without a partner, though)

Pippin (I Guess I'll Miss the Man or Corner of the Sky (my fav) (I'm a diehard..the first musical I ever performed...LOVE it!)

jmo

J

And Rent? She just might "scare" a lot of people with her rendition of Seasons of Love..think? (I taught school in Trenton...the kids loved this song..it's emblazoned in my mind...I can see Susan doing this...don't ask me why..but I can..)

OMG...Moon...there are SO MANY people like Susan (not as good, probably? but might be?) living in their simple lives..never had a chance..have the talent. So many people do not realize that there are those GEMS living their simple lives but with talent that would WOW anyone, but that they didn't have that chance or opportunity to be heard.

I have a Master's in Music..because I fought for it..paid for it...many many years in debt to pay it off. I do NOT have her talent...but I have my own in instrumentals. Ten to twenty years ago, I might have been able to stand on that stage and "play"..My Dad always wanted me to...

That's why I posted..IF I HAD THE MONEY, I'd back her...100%. I am SO GLAD that Simon is going to help her.

My son is so talented..not like her..not like Geoffrey Gallant..(Check him out!!!) but superbly talented. Check him (Gallant) out...support him, please..if you care about talent and kids. I've talked with his family several times..That child has a real future...

I'm coming up on the one year anniversary of my mother's death (19th)..she had an amazing voice (had I not ruined mine..I could sound like my mum...3 octaves)..not as great as Susan's (I swear she has 5 octaves)..no way...but it "rings a bell" for me. She took care of her mother. I could not..I was thousands of miles away from mine. She has such Talent. I want to see this Woman SUCCEED.

She will Jayne!! Underneath that insecure side, she has guts..real guts and total confidence in her singing. She won't have to be trained to be secure in her ability, she knows it. I had no idea that had applied to another talent show on tv back in 2000 and was told "you don't reach people" and not given the chance. I hope the producer/host who said that is now crying buckets of tears at the amount of money and ratings he lost!

After seeing Ms. Boyle on Larry King, I wonder if she's mildly autistic. Her whole demeanor reminds me of Temple Grandin, the cow expert who is also autistic. Maybe it's because they resemble each other; I don't know.

We're listening to her over the internet and think she is simply wonderful.

Can you imagine how she sounds live? I love her "Cry Me A River".

Of course all of this will change her...we are the sum of our experiences and she's entitled to grow and stretch rather than remain static.

I can only hope that sub-species of humanity, those who take advantage of the innocents in life and seem to be so prolific in the entertainment world, don't ruin her life.

Ms Boyle relates well to others, emotes, laughs and is charming so I don't think she is autistic, Most autistics do not have any of these characteristics. According to her story, she was mildly brain damaged at birth. Great gal and the best of luck.

Your correct, it was stated that she was deprived oxygen at her birth.. as suffers some mild mental handicap... I find her very engaging, has a beautiful voice, her voice is such a gift.. can't wait to hear more of her. When she laughs.. it just makes me smile... I wish we could watch BGT too... can't wait to hear the next results... the ratings for that show has to have gone through the roof.

In interview with her priest Father Basil Clark, gives more insights into Susan as a person and singer.

Oh i will be so nervous when she steps out on stage in May.

"In a sense, there is a beautiful voice trapped in this damaged body," he said. "It is an absolute contrast. There she was on television acting very peculiarly and the audience was expecting peculiar things to happen and then a voice of an angel comes out – and that's Susan."

Father Clark said that local people who knew Miss Boyle, the youngest of nine children of a family of Irish immigrants, were "enormously proud of her and wish her the best.”

he also talks about how worried he is for her.

OK...now I get it....about Susan Boyle. I jumped the question/query...sorry.

I just listened to that "ridiculous" news release about "Cry Me A River"..NOW that is NOT Susan Boyle...if that is what the poster's are saying, I totally agree. That is NOT her voice...Susan is MUCH MUCH better and a much more mature and "full voiced" singer. OK...now I guess I understand the "issue".

Cry me a river is NOT Susan Boyle

But Susan is indeed Susan. That voice on Cry me a River doesn't compare at all.

OK, Jane, so you believe Susan Boyle IS actually singing on the British TV show. Not a lip sinc, etc.

However, you do not believe that is actually Susan Boyle singing Cry Me A River on the CD. And that is because Susan is much much better than the person on the CD. You said: "That voice on Cry Me A river doesn't compare at all."

Can you give your specifics on the comparison. Thanks in advance for your insight.

I was "wrong" apparently...it was a voice that didn't have the range Susan Boyle had in the BGT song. BUT...I listened to it a dozen or more times...It's a totally different timbre in voice..BUT...now that I've listened to it so many times...I can see that Susan Boyle did that 10 years ago or so..or could do it TODAY.

Sorry..if I've misled or confused people. I was so much FOR Susan and when I heard that song, I thought No...NOW? That only ADDS to her talent.

The telegraph article made me cry. She spent her whole life savings on the two songs, before the 1999 recording by the editor in her village. She tried so hard and got rejected so much.

Does anybody know when the next BGT show is? I guess I just assumed it would be once a week.....?? TIA

a good article on her from an orchestral musician who has accompanied the greats:

What that audience and I heard is, quite simply, the real article. In a world where the airwaves are jammed with noise, the voice of a true soul can be unique.

In the matter of Ms. Boyle we could analyze her instrument (the cumulative vibrations made by Ms. Boyle when she sings) and her musicianship. The instrument is perfectly supported, clear and unforced. Musically, just in the last few notes of the first phrase, Ms. Boyle knows how to respect the rhythmic structure while keeping it spontaneously alive. For my musical friends: Just notice in that first phrase how she elides the pitches at the end of that phrase; "and a day" are the words (I think!) or mi-fa-sol in C.

But such analysis isn't needed. The audience heard somebody truly singing from her heart, unimpeded by false ideas about music and singing or corrupted by narcissism.

Susan is wonderful, I wish her all the best. I am nervous of her singing Whitle down the wind, just think more soprano and her comfort range. Then again who knows what she is capable of. Go Susan

Grammybear, ITA. Her priest really upset me, he made her sound as though one minute she would be singing beautifully and then just go off uncontrolably. Susan certainly seemed to hold her own during the many interviews, she seems in total control. Singing is her life, she has done beautifully, she is very poised and graceful in her replies. Scary to think so many would change her with a make over. I was glad Amanda stated she would protect her as well as Simon. Piece graciously extended an invitation to tea/dinner.
I am looking forward to her next debut, I believe 7th of May. I espectially want to here her version of Whistle down the Wind since I've really only admired Sarah Brightmans version. Cheers and good Luck to Susan.

I think the priest did just that..made her look like a bifurcated person..one time this...another time that. Maybe that's true? BUT....he was probably seeing her in the "light" of caring for her mother, running the house..having this "gift"...dunno.

I "swear" she will outdo Sarah Brightman (who I adore..from Phantom and on). That is ONE tough song..but she sang one of the toughest..."I dreamed a dream".

I'm thinking that people are looking at her like some sort of "savant" (SP?) or Turrets' kind of person. Well...what if she is? I worked with an absolutely Amazing Percussionist..Turrets (again the SP)..but could he "outplay" anyone? Yes, indeed. She doesn't have that..no way...I worked with that colleague of mine long enough to know she couldn't have been onstage that long without an "outburst". Savant or terribly brain damaged? I don't think so...but perhaps indeed damaged enough to make her WHO she is..and that isn't all that horrible IS IT? God gives us as much as we can handle..maybe less...sometimes maybe it seems like "more"?

From what I've now truly listened to, digested, and taken to heart..this woman has a talent that is just superbly amazing. She needs perhaps to be a bit "coddled" and "cared for"...but she can outdo Paul Potts (and I LOVE Paul Potts...no "dis" to him). (She is almost like a Robin Williams of vocal qualities - I know that sounds stupid - but she can emulate whatever style and timbre she wants to, it seems....UNIQUE) I want to see her WIN (BUT..I also want to see the Stavros Duo do something GREAT...if they make 2d? do they still get to perform???..they are AMAZING).

Jayne!!, What you said, I totally agree.... Paul Potts, I don't know, he stunned the stage, he ain't no Andrea Bocelli for sure, my fav..
I think Susan can be anything or anybody she wants to emmulate. Have you heard her song Cry me a River? Bolled me over, totally, I can picture her in front of her mirror, accapella, singing in her minds eye exactly as she sees the song to be sung. She is stunning, she knows the pitch, she has a built in tuning fork! Anyone who cannot see beyond her cover is a fool. I can close my eyes and just listen to her renditions if only she had more to give us. Anxiously awaiting, may her Mothers love guide her in her quest. Check out this site, Paul Potts and Sarah Brighman virtual duet w/ Andrea. I think Paul used this on TV. Sorry, have to do search on top. Great site for show tunes.

the man who wrote I dreamed a dream compares Susan Boyle to Edith Piaf

Alain Boublil, who, with composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, penned the score for Les Miz, told the New York Post, "I think of Edith Piaf. . . Piaf was a small woman who looked like nothing. And then she opened her mouth, and this beautiful sound came out."

I would love it!! I have learned more about musical theater music in 2 weeks than my whole life. I checked out Edith on wiki and what a tragic struggling life she had until she finally made it. and even after. Though with her beginning 20 years its no surprise that there were carry overs.

she looks terrific, it makes me sad though that the reason is she and her family felt hurt at some of the things said, i suspect "Hairy Angel" being screamed from headlines each day was the hurtful one. I cringed every time i read that nick name the british press gave her.

Caroline Boyle (no relation) of Miss Toner's salon told ET that it was a "collective decision" between Susan, her family, and the stylist to give her a new look: "We decided [that] to change her [a lot] was not a good idea -- you know she's charming as she is -- so we just trimmed it a little and put a little color in, [to] take away the gray."

Caroline explained that the reason for the cut and color, which cost about $51, was partially due to criticism from the press: "I think the papers like to sell papers, so they say some horrible things, but it's not nice for [Susan's] family to read those kinds of things, so I think that's why she had a wee, mini makeover -- just to make her look her best, rather than change her."

What an amazing lady. I have this dream of going to see her on Broadway and seeing her. Then bumping into her on the street and asking if she would like to join me for a burger and a tea at the diner. Wouldn't that be great?! Wouldn't be her brand of tea, though. I do hope she stays as sweet as she is.

VC2, yeah people can be mean. But I bet it made her feel good to get a makeover. And in that case I am all for it. I'm sure she's had enough heartache in this life and it is great that she has gotten the break she always dreamed for. I hope people drop the nickname as well.

What is going on with simon and piers? From talking about how great Susan Boyle's voice is, they have turned to this:

Cowell added that Susan was not even a stand-out talent. "She was just one of a group of very good auditions," he said.

And Piers Morgan also had his say, describing her as "a 48-year-old woman with a little talent".
http://www.whatsontv.co.uk/reality/britains-got-talent-3/news/bgts-susan-is-too-famous-says-cowell/5659

had read his comments about her needing to focus and win the semi's but they hadn't put out the other comments before.

I read an article earlier today or last night where susan's brother is making noises about how susan should quit the show, but i was hoping it was the brother just being a noddy.

Susan Boyle is in London, all ready for the semi finals that are either tomorrow night or the night after.

A few recent articles:
Barbara cook, the soaring soprano will be at Lincoln Center May 30 and said this in an interview (out of the blue too, not even a direct question)
TM: You work so hard, and you do go out and see a lot of shows, but I know you also spend time at home. What do you when you're relaxing?
BC: By nature, I am a night person. I just love that period around 3am, when I know no one will bother me then. I sometimes watch a lot of YouTube. I think I've seen that clip of Susan Boyle 15 times, and I cried every time. It's just dynamite. And yes, I occasionally watch myself too.

Simeon Cowell has already got her debut album planned:

Simon Cowell and record company bosses have made plans for Susan Boyle’s debut album – even before she performs live on TV for the first time.

The Scottish singing sensation has been getting vocal coaching and is expected to wow viewers again in the semi-finals. She remains the bookies’ favourite to win the contest.

The Czech National Symphony Orchestra have already been provisionally booked so she can record an LP of Broadway classics next month. And if she is successful on BGT, she will fly to Prague and record tracks during a three day visit.

I know she will win. If I wanted to hear a 12 yr old sing a Michael Jackson song I would listen to Michael Jackson at 12, I didn't care for the young boy or young girl singing( that was on youtube). Susan deserves to win on her voice talents, her singing is awesome, and I am a old rocker at heart but will buy her cd in a heartbeat. Wish we could find a link to watch it. Good Luck Ms. Boyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's wonderful, what a surprise it was when he started to sing! I hadn't heard of a male soprano before.

Here's one I very much enjoyed too:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMKw-A0hKjc&feature=related

I'm not sure it's called soprano when a man sings like that. I think it's called falsetto.

Hmmmm...I guess I'm kind of wrong.

Thanks for all the links to Susan Boyle. As I was going through them I ran across this one that has the story of her life. It wasn't always the easiest.

http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/2009/05/04/2009-05-04_the_susan_boyle_story.html

It sure wasn't

FYI, not only is she thru (none of them sang tonight, tonight was when they revealed the 40 who made it..judges choice) but there was reaction from her.
http://talent.itv.com/videos/video/item_200216.htm

AND!! for all those there that can watch live stream (i am so jealous)

The 48-year-old has been handed the coveted final slot in tonight’s semi-final, which is expected to draw record audiences for ITV1.
In an unprecedented move, the channel will broadcast her performance to audiences across the world by streaming the show on its website.

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view/81890/SUSAN-S-TERROR/

That is between 8:30 and 10:30 pm british time.

Maybe someone can find the exact info on the itv website.

Funny comment of hers from same link as above:

But she admits she finds all the fuss in America and her YouTube stardom baffling. She admitted:
“Until six weeks ago the only tube I knew of was a tube of Smarties!
“The support from all over the world has been unbelievable.

Thanks VC2 for the info and links. I wasn't sure how it works but now I know the judges looked at each performer's video again and chose the group of 40. And then they perform again.

If there are 40 and Susan is last, did semi finalists also perform today (Saturday)? I can't see how 40 are going to do their thing within 2 hours tomorrow.

I'll be sure to watch tomorrow. I read somewhere that Susan will not reveal what she's singing till showtime.

no they didn't perform today. And they wont all be doing it tomorrow. ITV confirmed Susan will be singing tomorrow (and the last one to sing that night) but i think there are 3 days of the semi finals thenn the final.

She got through the auditions (remember the glasgow audition was the first one. She won the regionals, but only a few saw that from the production team) Then went to the glasgow audition and was given 3 "yeses" allowing her to be considered for the semi finals.

Tonight (saturday night) they did the reveal of the 40 chosen.

Tomorrow is the start of the semi final's. I believe its all going to take a week

I so hope she wins. Her voice is phenomenal and her back story just adds to it. Caring for her parents, a learning disability, laughed at and bullied in her village even up until the show by the kids.

the most hearbreaking comment i heard her make was when she said "i am not lonely any more". She has 8 sisters and brothers, is a very nice lady and shouldn't have had to be lonely anway.

On Oprah Simon pointed out something that was great though. In the pre audition interviews, she said she was going to "rock this audience" and also half way through the song she gave this little smile saying she knew she had them!

btw...for those thinking that the reason she was pre interviewed meant it was set up, far from it. I read an article where Ant and Dec (the ryan seacrests of the show) had decided not to bother interviewing Paul Potts. They were upstairs having a sandwich when they heard the audience bring the house down lol, and said "i think we better get back there". Ever since they have pre interviewed each contestant bc they never wanted to be caught with their pants down again.

I am so jealous. i have no way to watch this, i want minute by minute updates :D

eta and i am thrilled simon has already decided to go through with an album for her. However i think this is another BGT first. their contracts say they cannot discuss/hire/sign or meet even with a manager until the show is over. In her case i understand an exception being made.

Oh...and did you know she met Andrew Lloyd Weber?

VC2
05-24-2009, 01:16 AM
Here is one comment about the meeting:

Andrew Lloyd Weber ran into Britian’s Got Talent breakout start Susan Boyle at a studio in London where she “impressed him enough for the creator of West End hits such as Cats, The Phantom of the Opera and The Sound of Music, to consider her for a part.
Lloyd Webber even has a role in mind but is refusing to reveal what it is.

http://ca.glam.com/blogs/style_critics/evita_composer_andrew_lloyd_weber_to_cast_susan_bo yle_in_west_end_production

what i find fascinating is that she has been given studio access at a studio that andrew lloyd weber goes to, and a voice coach. BGT/simon cowell is going further for her in advance than i think has been done before. One poster here (Jayne) said she thinks her range is as great as Julie Andrews. I must say having listened to all her songs (whistle down the wind is my favorite) i think she is right.

Here is Lloyd Webers actual quote:

He recently met Boyle, the internet sensation from Britain’s Got Talent, at a recording studio in London and he told The Sun he had a role for her.

“She is a terrific sport and she’s a great fan of my shows,” he said.

“If she wanted to be in one, well it could happen. It would have to be the right role. Maybe I know what it could be, but I’m not telling. She’s got a great future”
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/susan-boyle/5327753/Susan-Boyle-to-be-given-West-End-musical-role.html

She may not win...but remember the 7 minute youtube where she says she hopes to have a career as a professional singer, and cowell smirks saying "why hasn't it happened yet?" and she responds "i haven't had the opportunity but here is hoping that this changes that"?

well it has...win or lose

That is the mark of a professional (not in the sense that she is but the tenacity and the grit needed to be one)

She had 50 million people watching, a woman who volunteered in a small little village, had tried out for competitions when younger but always lost or humiliated (that 1995 jerk host, on the floor looking up her dress), thrust into international superstardom literally overnight from the day the show aired, she got shakey and then she got it together and did what she knows she can :)

Well..I guess he did tell a "white lie" about singing in public...he's done theatre before, as I understand it. that is "public" but it's a far cry from "singing in public".when you are alone onstage in front of that large of an audience..than being on stage with a troupe of actors behind you..and hardly that large..at least what I figure where he's acted before. he's done community theatre before..right? Yes..he should have told it "like it is"..but..in a sense "so what"...I've read many of the others have "faked it" too ..in that sense..Susan Boyle did recordings before..so did Julian Smith..and several others..but NOT to audiences or in such a dynamic set up as this.

I'd bet Stavros Flatley never did a performance like in front of more than family or friends..and they were Fantastic. IF THAT is what BGT is after..then STAVROS fits the bill waayy above the others, I'd imagine..as well as 2 Grand (grandfather and grandaughter)..and Kieran..the little drummer.

Well it wasn't exactly a small community theatre.

The UK Sun obtained a video of Jamie Pugh's performance with his group at Her Majesty's Theatre, the West End home of Andrew Lloyd Webber's international mega-hit The Phantom of the Opera.

The group, reports the Sun, performed a medley of Rod Stewart numbers under the heading Great American Songbook. Jamie Pugh seemed so confident he even did a solo of Louis Armstrong's classic What A Wonderful World. The program for the night gave him a mention, saying: "This is Jamie's first foray into the world of musical theatre and marks his first public appearance. "He has dreamed of making this journey ever since he was a boy, when he saw Les Miserables in London." To read the full article in the UK Sun, click here.

I was never a bit show tunes person either and she converted me as well!

This song..Memory, it just fits what is happening to her.

One verse:
Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I musn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

i saw this comment under a youtube of it, no idea if its true or not:

got this from a fan site...this fan sounds like they have seen Cat's...and says the shaky beginning was done on purpose...here is what they said...

Whatever the cause, at that point she transformed, following the concept of the verse as I observe it. Grizabella, the grey beauty, is reborn during her singing of the song Memory. Susan didn't falter. She play acted the part to perfection.

I was curious about the person who posted on YouTube who said s/he saw a version of CATS where Grizabella did start "shaky"..(have performed Cats..two different productions and never recalled it)..and just checked another youtube of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-L6rEm0rnY

NOT that it matters...if Susan Boyle was a tad nervous in the beginning..it was hardly noticeable...and it was "effective" theatrically. All to HER..she was FABULOUS. They say the first and last notes are the most important..and she nailed them both!! PLUS..something new from her next time?? Wonder what it will be..

I'm so non-talented I didn't recognize a stumble, unless it was the 1st couple of notes that seemed a little off. She grabbed her stomach as if to steady herself--that's the only reason I caught it. Without the stomach grab I would have thought it just one of those songs you have to tolerate the 1st stanza of just to get to the good part. lol.

The site is lagging and freezing so badly now I can't watch with my old laptop. I suspect it's getting too many hits.

I can't find Jamie Pugh's performance from tonite. If anyone does, please post it. Also Diversity not up.

It can't possibly be random chance that Susan got the "coveted last spot". I'm sure the producer's made the world watch the whole show first.

Great point about Susan being last, I hadn't given that a thought.

Well it doesn't really matter if the stumble was deliberate or not, the public voted her in. She did seem a little more tense than her last performance but I am sure it was because they keep saying to her that the whole world was watching so I am sure she just wanted to live up to all the support, to which she did.

i just can't imagine how tense she must have been. Like you said, the whole world watching being reminded of it, and just .. her dream is within her grasp after 30 years or more. It must be mind boggling.

She sure keeps her sense of humor tho,

I didn't think she looked as relaxed as she did in her first performance. She looked like she was having the time of her life the first time...she looked strained this time. Given how her life has turned upside down since we first saw her, it doesn't surprise me in the least. I thought she looked quite pretty. I was afraid they'd changed her so much she'd be unrecognizable...Amanda said she wouldn't allow major changes in Susan's appearance, and it looks as if she kept her word.

How many weeks until the finals?
