First/second seasons, I didn't watch. The premise sounded ridiculous. Then, one night, nothing else to do, so I watched it on demand. Been glued to it since.
I have to catch up before I watch the new one. Why does it take so long for these type of shows to come out on DVD. I don't get Showtime, but watch on DVD.

John Lithgow's character is one creeeeepy guy. :scared:
I was surprised by the Lt. and Angel. I'm gonna watch it again tonight on demand and I'll report back more then.

Fantastic opening episode. :thumbsup::thumbup:
Didn't take long to introduce John Lithgow's character did it?
The first thing I thought of when the episode ended was: aren't the victim's body parts still in the back of Dexter's S.U.V.?

Yes some of the parts were in the car and I think some fell out. I don't want to give away too much since some haven't watched the whole episode yet. John L is one crazy killer! Poor Dexter I have a feeling he going to slip up more this season having less sleep because of the baby. Great start to season 4

Don't you know it! Jimmy was so good! You could just tell that the other actors were in heaven on screen with this guy. I think the quality of his work caused the other actors to raise their game too.
Wasn't he on The West Wing a few years ago? He is just a wonderful actor IMO.

It is strange to think about Dexter and Deb. I look at then closely when they are doing scenes together and try to see if there is any hint of romance. I don't think I see it. I love Deb's character. I'm near the end of Season 3 and it is good to see her pulling more tools than just a hammer out of her tool chest. LOL. I remember Dexter from Six Feet Under. He was great there too! He played gay so well, it was hard to stop thinking of him that way.
Jimmy Smits was on West Wing for awhile. I googled him and he started out playing LE in Miami Vice the series!!! He was Don Johnson's partner before the other guy. I didn't know that. He then went on to play in LA Law. That show was huge in the 1980's. That is where I got a huge crush on him. He later went on to NYPD Blue. I cried when he died on that show. I also saw that he had been in quite a few movies including Star Wars movies.

Rita is killing this season for me. I'm not sure why they are writing her like this, but it's annoying me to no end!
It's a good thing that I have John Lithgow to fall back on because none of the other stories are doing anything for me.
Dexter

It is becoming obvious to me that Lundy does recognize what Dexter truly is.
Whenever Lundy speaks to Dexter about the Trinity Killer, Lundy always repeats the same mantra: "not enough evidence"
Now.... all of us that watch the show know what Dexter does when there is "not enough evidence." Dexter takes care of "justice" himself.
That is what I see happening here. It seems Lundy is leading Dexter into this case for the sole purpose of Dexter taking care of it because law enforcement cannot.
For those who doubt my theory above... watch the facial expressions coming from Lundy when he speaks with Dexter. Listen closely to the words Lundy uses.
And, of course, you will notice that when Lundy and Dexter were discussing this case while the dummies were being thrown from the warehouse... Lundy includes Dexter when Lundy speaks about the "thrill of the hunt" and "thats what kind of people we are."
And finally... why would Lundy seek out a blood spatter expert to help him with this case? Dexter is not a detective. He's not even a police officer.
So... as I stated above... I do believe Lundy is on to Dexter's true nature. And I believe Lundy might very well know of Dexter's past. Meaning... I believe Lundy knows about Dexter's mother being murdered in front of him, Dexter's brother (Ice Truck Killer), and the fact that Dexter's father took Dexter in as one of his own when he found Dexter in the puddle of his own mother's blood.
Alas... all of the above is just a theory of mine. :)
Now... what the hell are the writer's doing to Rita's character?!?
Here is a woman who has been a mother for, what, ten years now? The moment she has a newborn she becomes über-b!tch. She is treating Dexter as if he were a child.
Something's gotta give with Rita's character. The writers are destroying her part in this series.

Well... last night's episode was a doozy.
While watching the episode, I was thinking that Lundy was going to somehow become the Trinity Killer's next victim.
And then the episode ends the way it did.
I believe both will survive. But if not... Debbie will be the only one to survive.
I can't wait to get on board for this season. I just finised watching last season's finale. It was very good!
I just switched from HBO to Showtime. I guess I'll have to wait until next week for the next episode. I was told by Time Warner I could catch up by On Demand. I hope that's true. I can't wait!!!!

I like just about all the premium channel series (Weeds, Entourage, etc.), but the only ones I really MISS are Dexter and Big Love.
Will re-instate it for a few months after the first of the year.
Thanks for the commentary.
I am so EXCITED!!! I just found out that the guy who plays Dexter (Michael C. Hall) was born and raised in my town of Raleigh, NC!!! His mom still works at a local high school! I thought I picked up something with his accent. I hope he comes home to visit from time to time. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled for him.

Anyone watching Dexter tonight? I missed the entire season and it's being redone tonight in a 4 hour Dexter marathon on Showtime.
I don't get Showtime but I've just finished watching Season 1 on the 101 Direct Tv right before Season 4 began. Then last week I got to rent Season 2 and 3. Then, I got this solicitation call from DD because I had just downgraded my service. Just before I hung up on him, I heard him offer me all DD programming including all premium movie channels for $4/month for 5 months. The catch? They want to get me hooked so I'll sign up. The cost? $179/mo. Got to be kidding. Didn't know anyone paid that much for TV, lol.
Point being, I got the 5 months for 4 dollars and tonight I get to catch up on Season 4. I'm hooked on this show. Is that disturbing or what?? I love this character and the whole bunch (just for entertainment value).
OOps, starting right now!

Darn, I just realized from the website videos that I've missed Episode 11 and 12 of Season 3 so there's a gap for me. I've watched something like 32 hours of Dexter the last 3 days and now I realize Blockbuster missed one when I ordered. There must be one DVD with only the last 2 episodes on it.
I love this guy playing the Trinity killer. He's a super creepy bad guy. Jimmie Smits was better than I expected also (boy he's gotten fat since Law and Order, lol).
Lila was a great character. Nothing scarier than an obsessed ex.
I like Deb better the longer I watch. Didn't like her at first. Don't like Rita at all and she's getting worse. All that bitchiness she blamed on "hormones". So constantly needy. I can't see the series letting him kill her off though, but I'm hoping they figure out a way.

OK, I've watched all 4 seasons this week and that kinda makes them run together.
When did Batista break up with the vice cop? I thought they had something good going.
The Lt. has grown on me, kinda of like Deb. But not Rita, I hated her character from the start.
Deb's surely gonna cheat on the boyfriend and he's such a great guy.

Batista and the Vice cop broke up after the wedding and before this season started. Someone asked Batista about her in the first episode and he just said something about "moving on". I liked her too but have him and Maria together keeps the cast tighter. Deb has grown on me also. Did you know that the actress that plays her is now married to Michael Anthony Hall (Dexter)? Thanks withay. Thought I was all alone talking to myself.
Rita is so manipulating in a passive aggressive sort of way. And not a believable character either. She really is a weak point in the show but maybe you're right. I love Batista and starting to really like the Lt. What the heck is up with Quinn? Why won't he leave Dexter alone? He's too dumb to be on to him but what's up with the friendly overtures?
Deb and Lundy together is almost creepy in itself. To much like incest. I'm in Episode 3 now and she's lusting for Lundy still (even though I know he gets killed in the next show). I haven't figured out this episodes victim yet.

I can't figure out what kept Dex from being caught when the bodies were found from the plastic. Wonder what he does with it? Just one hair with the follicle would identify him inside the plastic. I wonder if his DNA would be in the system for elimination just like his fingerprints? He doesn't even wear a hairnet when he "works" on his kills.
Did you know that the actress that plays her is now married to Michael Anthony Hall (Dexter)?

Weddings ~ Dexter Siblings Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter Are Now Real-Life Spouses
Don't worry folks, it's legal. They may play brother and sister on Dexter, but in real life Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter were lawfully wed on New Year's Eve, according to Hall's rep, Craig Bankey. The outdoor ceremony was held in Big Sur.

Dexter only kills evil people or people who have evaded the justice system. It seems to me that recently the gore has been slightly less than at the beginning of the series. The only "innocent" person I can remember that Dex did away with was the cop who was on to him. Didn't watch marathon so I can't remember his name.
For me, I just love all the characters (except Rita LOL) and think the scripts are so well written.

The murder that Trinity committed last night was very gory. And all Dexter could do was watch it happen. He was running a little late. I guess.

I sincerely hope Rita and Dexter separate. I don't see any way that Rita will allow Dexter to keep the apartment. And I also don't see any way that Dexter could convince Rita to let him keep the apartment. Shy of telling her the truth, that is.
But really... Dexter started dating Rita to "normalize." Dexter married Rita (and the kids) to "normalize." Dexter is a sociopath. He knew he needed something that would make him look and act normal to others.
If Dexter and Rita were to divorce, Dexter would still have that.
I'm not saying I want Rita written out of the show.
On the sociopath subject... surely those watching have noticed Dexter is starting to "care" about others in his life. Once in last week's episode and once in last night's episode.
Back to Trinity... does anyone think Dexter will lay off Trinity for a while just because Trinity turns out to be a married father?
In Dexter's words... he's "like me."
I think Trinity is killing his own family (himself included) in effigy when he commits his murders. Look forward to finding out the truth about the "ritual," though.
Dexter, as soon as I watched that scene with Trinity last night I knew my words would come back to haunt me!

Watching the show last night, it never occurred to me that Anton might have shot Deb and Lundy.
You and Debb (the poster) might have a point there.
I was very disappointed to find that Lundy did indeed die. As I've said before, I stay away from spoilers and I don't even watch the next episode's preview.
Before the end of last night's episode, I was hoping we would see more of Lundy through Dexter's listening of Lundy's tapes.
But now... Dexter knows exactly who Trinity is and where he lives.
I don't see any reason why Dexter would still listen to all of Lundy's tapes. Darn it.

Dexter, as soon as I watched that scene with Trinity last night I knew my words would come back to haunt me!

I'm with you on that one. What exactly is his "ritual?"
Does anybode besides me wonder where the affair with Harry and Dexter's mother will lead to?
I'm thinking that Dexter is Harry's biological child. That would explain to me at least, why he adopted Dex and left the other child.
Maybe I just think too much. lol
Oh and Dexter didn't actually kill Doaks. He was struggling with finding a solution besides killing him when that crazy woman he was sleeping with found Doaks and blew the place up.
 So far, Dexter has only killed people by "the code" right?
Oh Mom, you're right...I'd forgotten the exact circumstances of Doaks, so that means Dexter hasn't gone outside his code. At least as far as I can remember.

It's fiction.
LOL like I didn't know....
Perhaps Dexter will keep his apt and let Deb live there. He can use it when she is at work or on a date, once she recovers sufficiently of course; or
He could start a hobby that calls for him to need a quiet space like bomb making, LOL; or
He could convince Rita that he is working undercover and he needs it for top secret reasons that Deb doesn't even know about; or
He could plead with her that he needs it for mental health reasons. She has confirmed it isn't for drugs or women; or
He could move everything onto his boat for privacy.
Oh, does he use his air conditioner? I don't understand how he runs it with the blood slides inside. ????

Dexter only kills evil people or people who have evaded the justice system. It seems to me that recently the gore has been slightly less than at the beginning of the series. The only "innocent" person I can remember that Dex did away with was the cop who was on to him. Didn't watch marathon so I can't remember his name.
For me, I just love all the characters (except Rita LOL) and think the scripts are so well written.
The cop you are talking about was Doakes and while Dexter did imprison Doakes and think about killing him, that is not what happened.
Lila exploded the cabin with Doakes inside. Then Dexter followed Lila to Paris and killed her for killing an innocent (Doakes).
Dexter accidently killed Jimmy Smits' brother (Oscar) but I think that is the only innocent that he has killed. And he did that after Oscar pulled a knife on him.
I was reading on another board a thread that questions about the man that Trinity cursed at and practically begged to get beaten up by in the alley? Trinity kept standing there and calling the man names that I can't print here. The guy eventually beat the tar out of Trinity. Why did Tinity do this? His face looked all confused. Why? I have a theory. Trinity suffers from multiple personality disorder and the family man who returned home Sunday night, has no memory of what the other personality is doing. Perhaps there is a different personality for each murder. And the Trinity personality in the alley? Who knows which one he was. LOL
Just a theory.

I'm not sure what exactly is the ritual with Trinity. But it is obvious to me that there is a very specific sequence of events that has to happen at very specific times. To me, he is re-inacting something that seems to involve 1) a young woman...a sister or girl friend, 2) his mother,3) a man and 4) his father. And since Dexter and Lundy did not know about the step where Trinity gets beat up, there is a good possibility that there are even more steps to the ritual. But since they do not end in murder, Lundy never found out about them.

Did you see the look on his face when he say the news that Lundy was dead? He looked surprised and that makes me think he didn't shoot Deb and Lundy. I think now that Anton did it.

Are you referring to Trinity looking surprised when he saw it on tv? I think I recall that. Wasn't he sitting in a diner? Maybe Trinity did do it, except that one of his personalities doesn't remember. I hate the beat to death (pardon the pun) my theory that Trinity has multiple personalities, but did you catch when the security guard offered Trinity a cup of coffee and Trinity said No thank you, it turns me into a different person. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Time shall tell.

I must take back my previous words regarding Dexter and Rita separating. Excellent solution on tonight's episode. :)
It seems Dexter is going to allow Arthur (Trinity) to live a little longer. Looks like Dexter is researching Arthur so Dexter can learn to fit into society in the successful way Arthur has.
The revelation of Arthur's sister, mother, and father was a welcome development to the plot. I like where this season is going.
All in all, I think tonight's episode might be this season's best. And no one was killed.

After I watched it again I wonder if Trinity's sister killed herself and her mother killed herself after the girl died and Trinity's dad died because Trinity killed him because he was molesting his sister. Trinity looked so angry when Dexter had her ashes and he said "don't touch my sister" I don't know if this is what happened to Trinity's family but it's just a theory.

That is a great theory!!! It would fit into place too!!! I think you may have nailed it.
That would explain why he was cursing at the man in the alley and calling him names. Perhaps he was reenacting the way his father treated him when he was a child. The tub scene could be from when he found his sister after she committed suicide and perhaps his mother killed herself by jumping off of a building. Maybe he beat his father to death. I look forward to see how this comes together!
Last night was good, although Rita better lighten up. She has gotten on my last nerve. Does she annoy anybody else? If it's not going her way, she is a pain. Something tells me something strange from her past will come up in the future about her secret first husband.

This season is getting better and better.
I have to say though, Dexter's dad's appearances are going a little overboard. It used to be Dexter's "conscience" was his own "Dark Passenger."
Now it seems Dexter's dad is taking the place of his "conscience."
Anyway... Dexter killed an innocent man! Or did he? Will Dexter delve into the photographer's past to find something, anything to justify Dexter killing him?
And we now have a new Doakes in the form of Quinn. When Quinn's character was first introduced I didn't like him at all. Just when his character began to grow on me, the writers switch it all up. I have a feeling Quinn will end up catching Dexter in the act or something similar. Like maybe finding the blood samples hidden in Deb's (used to be Dexter's) new apartment. No matter what happens, Quinn will have to be taken out of the picture sooner or later.
On the subject of Deb... I knew all along that it was only a matter of time before she found out the truth about where Dexter came from.
Can you imagine how pissed off she's going to be when she finds out that Dexter is the Ice Truck Killer's brother? Deb was in love with that guy! He tried to kill Deb. Dexter saved her. If the writers leave this plot line to be fulfilled next season, I will be highly disappointed.
On the subject of the Trinity Killer (Arthur). Not to toot my own horn but I called that one. Dexter is trying to learn from him before he kills him. I'm afraid that Dexter won't be able to do that before Arthur gets another kill. Dexter needs to kill Arthur before Arthur kills again.
That's all I got for now. Anyone else have any thoughts about last night's episode?
Oh yeah. One more thing. I think Batista and LaGuerta will start up again. In secret. Bad move if they do though.
For the readers out there, I suggest the books. The first book is what season one is based on. The book was released well before Showtime decided to make a series.
The books, written by Jeff Lindsay, in order of publication:
Darkly Dreaming Dexter
Dearly Devoted Dexter
Dexter In The Dark
I still have yet to read Dexter In The Dark.
Dex, you've been reading my mind...my thoughts exactly on Quinn.
My thoughts on Dexter's mistake - killing an innocent? IMO more will be revealed. How could he make a fatal error like that; gotta be more to it.
Since you called it on Trinity, what do think about the coffin? Could it be for "Kyle" ? Mayhap Arthur has recognized himself in Dexter and believes he needs to be stopped?
That baby is so darned cute and I loved the way he reached out to Dexter's hand when he was in the highchair. Also enjoyed seeing Dexter giving him the bottle.
Great show last night. What is Trinity building? Dexter needs parenting classes. You can't leave kids alone, even though another adult was supervising. If his son had gotten sick and Dexter wasn't there, Rita would have killed him!
Ref. the blood samples in air conditioner. I thought Dexter moved the slides to the air conditioner in his new backyard office air conditioner. Remember when he turned it on the first time with the odd look on his face.
I heard a rumor that Deb the sister is leaving the show. Is this true?
I'm getting sick of Dexter's dad. It's too much of him. The best talking is when Dexter talks to himself. His father talking to him he is okay in small doses.

I think the writers got the hint that many fans (like me) were about fed up with Rita's whining and neediness and let up with that last night.
I think Trinity is building a coffin for his daughter. I think the time and her age is coming right for him to complete the "perfect' reenactment of the original trauma. Remember, he insisted on cutting his own lumber (the lumber yard wound not do) and he got hot under the collar when Dex asked why. Also, Trinity gets very emotional and obsessed when he's working on it. It must be perfect.
I don't get why they're letting Dex get so careless. He left a trail of evidence with the photographer. Also, why is he suddenly going for killers that are in LE sights anyway. He started out just going after killers that had escaped justice. The last ones haven't even gone to trial. Maybe it's because Doakes was right. Dexter is out of control. He's also forgotten rule #1---Don't get caught. He really rushed that photog job instead of getting more evidence. The stress of family life and Rita's demands are making him escalate and become careless. He also seems to be trying to prove Harry was wrong about a lot and it's getting him in trouble.
Doctor J,
You are right about the wood. I had forgotten how pesky he got about it. What did you think about not being able to kill the wounded deer? I'm still holding out on my multiple personality theory.
I think he will dig further into this last kill and discover that the guy was a killer after all of some victim that maybe LE doesn't even know about it.
Remimd me; Why does Dexter not want his sister to know the identity of his mother?

If Deb finds out who Dexter's mother was, then she will also find out that there was another child who Harry did not adopt. The child that grew up to become the Ice Truck Killer, her lover and Dexter's brother.
And she will learn about what Dexter was exposed to (his mother's murder) as a child.

I saw that the next episode it looks like Trinity opens up more to Dexter and shows him the bathtub where his sister died. I will be interesting to see how his sister died if she killed herself or someone killed her. I'm also wondering who the coffin is for? You say it's for his daughter? Then will his wife be next and then Trinity since he is the father of 2 kids?

I have all 3 books and still haven't finished the first one. Are the other books like the Showtime episodes?
The second and third books are not what Showtime based the second and third seasons on. The second and third books have nothing to do with the series. But... one subplot from the second book is in the second season. And that is... that Doakes is suspicious of Dexter. There's more, but I don't want to ruin the book for you.
READ NO FURTHER AS THERE IS A BOOK SPOILER:
In the first book, Debra discovers her brother's secret (and in future novels does not expose him), and LaGuerta is killed in the climactic confrontation.
As we all know, LaGuerta is alive and well in the series. And Debra has no clue about Dexter's beginnings. In the second book, Dearly Devoted Dexter, Dexter discovers that Cody and Astor share Dexter's need to kill and he helps them by teaching them the code of Harry. Their need to kill was brought on by their abusive father, Paul Bennett.
Of course, in the series, Cody and Astor are just normal kids.

This season IMO is the best so far......
When I first saw your above post I didn't agree with you. No offense. :)
Now I have to say I think you're right. And I think John Lithgow's character has plenty to do with it.
Last night's episode was fantastic. As the episode played, when they showed Arthur (Trinity) wiping down the coffin that he built, it hit me right then. Arthur built his own coffin. I noticed the size of it as he was wiping it down and I was thinking "that coffin is just about the size of Arthur."
I never did think Trinity shot Deb and shot and killed Lundy. And now I have to accept my friend Crispy's theory. That damn reporter sure as heck shot them both for the story alone to save her job. But I still wonder... if she meant to kill Deb. So Crispy, I'm with you for now on that theory.
The scene where Arthur was about to kill himself... just great. Of course, I'm thinking "no way." John Lithgow is a major character this season, no way will they kill him off so early. Yet, for a few seconds there, I thought it was really gonna happen. Turns out Trinity is killing his family in effigy. But I had the wrong family members in mind when I posted the same thought originally.
On to Quinn. The new Doakes. Vince has now given him information about Dexter's past. Guaranteed he's going to look up Lila and find her missing. I wonder now if there will be 2 "final confrontations" at the end of this season.
Of course, there is still another serial killer out there this season that isn't getting the attention he/she(?) deserves. The Tourist murderer. Yeah. I added "she" in there for Crispy. :) If Crispy's theory is right, then I believe that damn reporter has been killing the tourists all along.
Maybe 3 "final confrontations" this season? Although, Quinn could be the one to bring the reporter down. She might accidentally say something to Quinn only the shooter/killer would know.
Batista and LaGuerta. I knew they'd do it but I was still thinking "what the hell are they compromising their career's for?"
And to Starshine: this show is a morality play. It is about a serial killer. Yes. But it is about a serial killer who kills those who kill innocents. If Dexter didn't kill the people he kills, more innocent people would be murdered. But I'll give you this one, as far as we know right now, Dexter did kill one innocent person.
So what did everyone else think about last night's episode and the direction this season is going?
I wonder what Dexter will do when he gets word that it wasn't Trinity who shot his sister. Why didn't they calculate the bullet projectory in the beginning. I sometimes wonder about that dept. Not as smart as you would think.
Also, what about Rita? That woman is something else. Are they opening up a way for Rita to leave? If that happens it would free Dexter up again to spend more time on his hobby. LOL.
I was rather mystified with the haphazard way Dexter took off with Trinity. Very risky IMO. It's probably good things didn't go through. Dexter is trying to do things fast as opposed to correct. Big mistake.
I still think he will discover that the guy he killed did murder some innocent person in his past.
John Lithgow is great and I would certainly take nothing away from him or this season, BUT I do think I liked the season with Jimmy Smits better. Might change my mind tho as things progress.
I knew the wholesome, family man facade of Arthur was too good to be true, and apparently next episode his son is going to let Dexter in on what goes on behind closed doors. That will give Dexter even more fuel to exact "justice."
When Dexter was outfitting the motel bathroom in anticipation of dismembering Arthur, I thought of the Melanie McGuire case. Did anyone else follow that trial and make a connection?
Debb, IDK about Rita. Think the flirtation with next door neighbor will bloom into a full affair? Will he have some hidden past? Remember the first husband, then Dexter...she picks dangerous men!
Crispy

Rita playing house with the neighbor was quite interesting. Hopefully she'll walk across that front yard and never come back!!
