Money is good..time is better. Many shelters are really hurting because their contribuions are way down while more animals are being dumped on them. Bring newspapers...never could get enough...bring food or treats... and visit these cooped up animals. Take them for a walk as many of them are trained to go outside and need the exercize and socialization. I go every day. Believe me..you will get as much pleasure as you bring.

My son & His Mentor go every week to the local shelter and help out. They scoop poos, clean litter boxes and walk the pups...he loves it..falls in love every week with a new friend...I could have 100 of them if I left it up to him. So far 3 cats and 2 dogs is about my limits for now.

I have four cats. I need to discipline myself.

Our local shelter has been having a problem lately with having enough food so we have donated bags of cat & dog food & cases of canned dog & cat food several times. We are also on the list to take in dogs if we are struck by a hurricane. Anything anyone can do is very much needed & appreciated by the workers but more importantly by the animals.

and people should get their animals spayed and nuetered..We have created an over population of unwanted animals....we need to do what we can to control it.

Please remember not to just drop by--you must fill out forms, have vet references, go to training and be approved before volunteering at shelters.

An e-mail from Purina that I received:

"It doesn't take much to be a hero to a shelter pet - a little time, and a lot of heart. When you pledge to volunteer at a participating shelter, we'll help, too. For every pledge, Purina ONEŽ brand pet food will make a $5 donation to participating One Hope Network shelters, up to $500,000 (purchase not required)."

My DD manages a rural county animal shelter. With the economy the way it is, folks drive out from the city and dump their dogs and cats by the road. My DD's shelter is totally overwhelmed with animals.

I can't believe I am praising Walmart but I have to give them credit. There is a huge Walmart distribution center in her county. Once a month a truck pulls up and donates all the food and other supplies she needs.

Plus she loves her volunteers. They help keep the animals in the shelter exercised and loved.

Our shelter finally raised enough money to build a low cost spay & neuter clinic a couple of years ago. The vets in town donate their time.

Kudos to your DD & Walmart! :cursing: to the idiots who dump animals.

I wish I could. (sigh) I used to help the no-kill shelter whenever I visited my cousin in Chicago and felt very rewarded.

I used to volunteer at the Chicago Ridge Animal Shelter in Illinois.

I went on Tuesday and Thursday evenings after work and on Saturdays. It was rewarding, but heartbreaking.

Yes this is trus DS had to go through paper work & training and he is on a set schedule each week. Every Thurday at 6:00.

Yes, that is how it works. Otherwise, it is chaos when there are too many volunteers or too few. Plus, they need to do background checks on every volunteer, and training to walk dogs or to foster, etc.

My daughter and I went to give dogs baths for the year leading up to her becoming a Bat Mitvah, as her service, and I liked it so much I still do it once a month.

Well..here's an idea..that many shelters might not like..but the ones I went to were accepting.

Shredding..all those checks, balances, papers. I recently moved..and had to "toss" so many papers...finally am going through them. I'm living on the "edge" financially..so I kept..YES 6 garbage bags full of shredded paper as litter..ran out of space to store it..and frankly..there will be more over time. But, I took 6 bags to the local shelter - they accepted them. It can be used as litter...bedding for the bunnies, hamsters. Maybe not the Best..but it's usable and it's "free".
