need name of book

I was just telling a friend about a book I read twice...one in the 70's and again in the 90's, but I cant remember the name.

It was about a boy who came from India. he was going to college in the 60's in burkley. He meet a hippy girl going to college and they had tea a few time in the caffateria and went to the movies once. well he built some big romance up in his head...anyways she was shocked he thought they were getting married. so dumps him...well...ends up he kills her. gets away with it and is sent home to india, where he gets married and has a kid...

does it sound familier to anyone? do you remember the name?

It actually does Chitchat. I'm sure I read it too, but like you, I cannot remember the name of it. I'll do some research and if I come up with it, I'll let you know.
