I liked the comments. Someone said we need a "Garage sale Czar".
Maybe this is Obama's way of reducing the unemployment numbers. One meaningless job at a time.

The problem is the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA), passed by Congress last summer after the panic over lead paint on toys from China.

He would need an assistant "Garbage Czar". I've even been known to put something in my dumpster that might be dangerous. (Please don't send this post to the WH!)
:w00t::bored:
God, don't give them any ideas!
Of course knowing how they like to diversify to the point of wasting more tax dollars, we would have to have a Wet garbage Czar, Dry garbage Czar, Smelly garbage Czar, etc.

September 2, 1977 - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has culminated a major regulatory proceeding by issuing a final ban on lead-containing paint and on toys and furniture coated with such paint. This action was taken to reduce the risk of lead poisoning in children who may ingest paint chips or peelings.
Now how the heck did those toys with lead based paint make into the US?

Lead paint was not fully banned in the US until 1978.

Not to mention toys passed down from generation to generation that may end up in a yard sale -- could have the seller big trouble.

I'm starting to believe that Obama is far more dangerous than anything I could put in a garage sale but hey, that's only my opinion.

I love what one of the people interviewed said "Ultimately, the parent needs to really evaluate and be watchful of what the child is playing with. We as consumers have to be careful. It really comes back to us."
Wow, who would have thought of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY as opposed to Government Control? Shocking, I tell ya!!Whether through ignorance or malfeasance, there are dangerous people. Because of their return policy, Walmart has had consumers buy sprayers; then return the box to the store containing an old sprayer with chemicals from years prior endangering anyone handling the box.
Perhaps, the responsible citizen encountering a similar yardsaler should call LE?

Wouldn't you think the Feds have better things to do, like catching Tax Fraud Cheats? They wouldn't have to go far. Just stay in Washington D.C.

They could start with this administration. That would keep them busy for awhile and then they could move on to the Congress.
But it may be strange having a less than honest official heading a department trying to ferret out the tax cheats.

I have an old riding mower in the garage that I have been thinking about selling in a garage sale, but maybe I'll keep it for a while in anticipation of the Lawn Mower Clunker program.
I know what you mean. I needed a new bulkhead and thought maybe there would be a "bucks for bulkheads" program, but I just had to go it alone.

I saw the title of this thread and just had to visit. I thought it was a joke or something.
Frankly, I wish someone would do something about garage sales. I mean, who decided that they would start so early in the morning? Why? Everyone knows that you have to wait until closing before prices are lowered in anticipation of having to carry all that crap back into the garage. :scared: Things need to change so that the garage sale world can flow smoothly along.

We have had safety regulations in this country for years. Perhaps if they had been enforced, children that now have severe health issues would still be healthy. As for lead in paint, do any of you know by looking at something whether there is lead in the paint? So all you so-called responsible people could very well buy something at a yard sale and as a result of your not knowing, altimately sicken or kill one of your own children or grandchildren. And you would probably blame Obama for it.

Surely, surely, surely - you give young parents (and grandparents too) credit for being aware of some of the things that are going on in the world both on the buying and selling end of things.
Blame Obama? Most of us know he can't leap tall buildings in a single bound. MO
You know they probably don't. Aren't these the same people who make excuses for people who bought more house than they could afford, signed up for credit cards they can't pay, took out car loans they couldn't pay, etc.
They probably don't believe it is possible for people to keep track of recalled products themselves, read contracts to know what the terms of the loan are, be able to know what their net income is and how far it can stretch in order to pay your own way.

You would think Obama would just use one of his tried and true tactics. He could just give everyone who was going to have a yard sale a lump sum of money and trash the junk. It would get rid of the bad items. Oh sure, it will be a lot of waste, but it would also continue to encourage money for nothing.

Blame Obama? Most of us know he can't leap tall buildings in a single bound. MO Then you are aware that all older dinnerware that is glazed is hazardous because of the lead in the glaze. And you also are aware that until less than 10 years ago, that included dinnerware made in the the US. And you also are aware that China and Taiwan still use lead in glazes so if your dinnerware was made in one of those countries, you could very well be poisoning your family. Many of us have plates, meat platters and even pitchers that are crazed. Crazing is those hairlined crack that appear in the glazed surface. Most people still use those plates. If you were to put say B-B-Q chicken or pork on a crazed meat platter, the acid in the sauce will leach the lead out of the glaze and into your meat. Not too long ago a whole family started having health issues. After an investigation it was determined they were all suffering from lead poisoning. The culprit was a pitcher that was used to hold orange juice. The acid in the juice leached the lead out of the glaze on a daily basis and they all drank lead with their morning orange juice. But being so smart and so responsible, you would never feed your family from glazed dinnerware.

OMG! I thought this was a joke! It is true? How rediculous is this? The unemployment rate is higher than ever. What a great idea to crack down on garage sales. Now all of the millions of people who make a living selling on ebay can be out of work too! Oh, but the oversight committee assigned to this will be making big bucks, have great insurance, will be able to buy new cars and homes. Yeah, that's right, Obama is looking out for the little guy! Give me a break!

I for one, is sick of the government treating us like children. I want to be able to live my life without big brother holding my hand and telling me what I should be able to do in every aspect of my life. Bush tried to do that. Then greedy people whose only interest is profit started selling us moldy peanuts mixed with mice droppings ground up in peanut butter, e-coli tainted meat, downer cows in ground meat, e-coli and salmanella vegetables and fruits. Many consumers got ill and some even died. So, as long as the main goal is profit, our choice is let government regulate things to keep us safer, or take our chances on getting ill or actually dying every time we sit down to a meal because it is for sure, industry will not regulate itself.

but questionable sugar substitutes, psychoactive prescriptive drugs for children, fluoridated water, mercury in light bulbs; mercury, adjuvants, and who know what else in vaccines is all okay-- even good for you, 'cause the gov't says so.

I'll take my chances. I don't need or want the govt telling me what I can or cannot eat, drink, wear etc. Heck, since if I grow my own, is the govt gonna send out a team to inspect each ear of corn or head of lettuce? They gonna come out and check each egg my chickens produce?

The BIGGEST reason we have had problems with our food is the importing of items from Mexico, etc. We used to make money selling our oranges here in California. Now, WE have to pay the packers to pick them. Another wonderful Government idea. Put the US farmers out of work and import from countries that urinate and defecate in their groves and fields. NAFTA was approved by both the democrats and the Republicans. Here is a thought. Close the borders for both illegals and their tainted products. Americans would be safer and more prosperous all the way around.

If a child were carelessly exposed to disposed of chemicals or lead paint, I would think then that the parent or guardian of said child could be called "careless". I don't think the government should have to worry about every careless parent. Maybe we should have government workers at every crosswalk too? Does the government have to hold your hand every step of the way? Cheesch. . .

Actually, Bush never tried to "run" our lives like Obama and his regime are doing.. IMO.. It was just this year that the Govt took over the auto industry and started buying up banks..etc.. I've never seen such stupid programs such as "cash for clunkers" and now cash for appliances. Where are the 5 million jobs that were promised? we wouldn't need all these poverty programs created by the Obama admin. if more people weren't unemployed.
