Texas man.

From the link:

The bacteria, most often encountered in seawater, rapidly spread throughout his body, and even the amputation of his leg could not stop it.

I never heard that before today!
Wow.

Seawater, although in most cases is pruifying and cleansing, contains multiple micro ecosystems. It is a double-edged sword. where these destructive bacteria are present it is fatal.....but is also a natural cleanses and provider of minerals,

It's real.

A lady friend of mine "caught" it. Severe intrusive surgery and massive antibiotics saved her life but disfigurement is testament to the horrible nature of this disease. Imagine telling your beau that you had a flesh eating bacteria.

The fatal turn is usually when it goes systemic and hits the lungs heart muscle and kidneys.....for some reason the liver puts up a bigger fight.....this is from some of the people I know who were sick or died from salt water intrusion flooding....I dont know about people swimming in the ocean anywhere else, though.

I remember the lady got the disease when she went to the hospital to give birth. She had a healthy baby, but she lost her arms and legs. What a nightmare.

Yes, horrible. Even that is an understatement. But I just read that she finally settled with the hospital for an undisclosed amount. Hope she did well.

The lady I spoke of suffered fist size fissures that sunk to the bone.

The problem back then (several years) was that doctor's didn't know what was wrong and D/X took precious time. They managed to save her legs but trauma is everlasting.

How awful! I have heard of such of things; there is a program on TV that shows various types of bacteria and other things. I saw it twice and cannot watch the program. Most of what I heard, things that attack the body usually happens in foreign countries and their waters. I can't remember the show or channel.

Sad for this poor man. This stuff is scarey. TY for posting. No swimming for me.

These things can mannifest in any body of water anywhere....Bacteria/lifeforms know no geographic boundaries that are created by man. It is fortunate that here in the Western World, medical care is available to more people than in other parts of the world. That is why it appears that these things are more prevalent in foreign countries.

A dear friend lost her husband to this disease 5 years ago. He had never been sick a day in his life except for the occasional cold or stomach flu. He complained of a sore neck one morning, by noon he called his wife at work because he was in severe pain. Five days later he was dead.

The doctors could never determine how he contracted the disease.

I don't know how much medical science knows about these forms of flesh eating diseases. An RN friend of mine said a man had this and was hospitalized where she worked. She told me she was really fearful of this illness and that's so unlike her. The man recovered but lost a good deal of his flesh on his thigh she said.

I don't think they always know how people contract it.

This is nasty stuff. I believe Ive posted before that I had this flesh eating bacteria in my right shoulder several years ago. It was the nastiest thing Id ever encountered and took forever n ever to get rid of it. I lost a lot of "flesh" in the shoulder region but was extremely lucky that they caught it and dx'd it so fast.

I used to live in Quebec. The then premier was a victim to this disease, necrotizing fasciitis, in the mid 1990s. It came on suddenly and I remember well when he was in hospital with this. For 10 days we heard nothing other than why he was in hospital and how very serious this was. No one knew how he could have contracted it. It was not expected he would survive. He did but he lost his leg. Amputation is what saved him. It was the first time I'd ever heard of this thing and it scared me to death.
