I'm not trying to defend this guy but out of curiosity, why did the cops have to kill him? According to the link:
"He kept walking toward the officer with the knife in his hand and that's when he was shot."
Walking? Why didn't the officer just shoot at his leg and incapacitate him?

The article said he was reported to have been smiking embalming fluid. i think it acts much like Angel Dust; makes the smoker so reved up that anything short of death will not stop him. The cop tried to get him to stop coming towards him with the knife...he probably felt he had no choice. It's easy for us to 2nd guess LE when we are not in danger, not so easy if he was coming at us with a knife and he had already stabbed 3 people including a 3 month old infant.

My understanding is LE is trained to protect the public and themeselves. They have to make life and death decisions in an instant. They might only get one shot so they have to maximize its effect. So they aim to kill. Shoot or be shot. I am sure another can explain it better but I hope you got the gist of it.

Because they're required to take the body shot. Any fire arms instructor, safety instructor or department would insist on it.
You aim for the largest body mass so:
1) They don't get another chance to come at you, he was armed with a knife, that doesn't mean he didn't have a revolver in an ankle holster.
2) So the bullet doesn't pass through a lesser body mass and hit an innocent.
3) So you don't miss all together trying to pick and choose what's to be a less than mortal injury, resulting again in a total innocent being hit.
4) If you point a gun at someone or something, you had better be prepared to kill it. That is the only time you should be pointing a gun at anything.
Can you imagine the outrage had they decided to be cutsie, rather than doing their job, which was to stop the guy that's intent on killing people.
Because they missed when they had the clear shot, the guy goes on to kill even one innocent person? Potentially a cop, but any innocent, dead unnecessarily? Or if he took someone hostage, with a knife to their throat?
Their job is to resolve the problem, not make it worse. Their job is to reduce the number of victims, not maximize them. Their job is to protect the innocent, clearly the guy who just savagely stabbed three people including a three month old baby isn't an innocent.
Those three people he just stabbed are waiting for you to resolve that problem so you can now tend to them, and their injuries.
The medics can't move in to aid the victims, until the threat is neutralized.
Would a hostage situation, the teen holding LE at bay as the three victims bled to death have gone over well?
Second guessing is really easy, unfortunately peoples lives hang in the balance of those split second decisions made in the middle of an emergency situation, they don't have the luxury of hindsight. There is a standard operating procedure and as long as they follow it, it's the bad guy that ends up on a slab rather than the three month old baby.

I wasn't second guessing. I have no sympathy for the perp and he got what he deserved.
I was trying to understand why the officer used deadly force. The article lacked many of the details and I'm sure the officer made the right call based on the circumstances.
With that said, I've seen cases where they incapacitate the suspect by aiming and shooting at other body parts and then arrest them.
We don't know if this guy had a gun or not. He may have.
If this was a life and death situation, I understand.
Thanks for replying everyone.

I can assure you, they don't aim for anything other than the largest body mass.
That's exactly why, you aim center body, if you're off your mark you're still likely to hit your target. You may be off center, but you'll hit your target rather than an unintended target.
Your target rarely stands perfectly still allowing you aim & steady time.
FWIW we are talking about the street cop, not the swat team who often needs to be more precise and usually is shooting long range. But they're snipers, called in for exactly the hostage situation the street cop wants & needs to avoid when they have the ability.
