i have been feeding purina one brand wt management to my 2 dogs for about a year now, i switched back to regular purina one after having the following problems, hair lose , skin color change, and dull fur, there is very little fat in the wt management food so yes they do lose wt. but, i'm not sure it's worth the problems it causes, beyond normal shedding drove me nuts, i couldn't vacume enough it was every where, with in a week of switching back i have noticed a decrease in hair lose, my dogs fur got so dull and dry even after a good bath the fur had no shine, i even noticed the skin darking odd but, true. i see a slight difference in the skin color and it's only been a week of the switch, i think it's better to cut down on the food then feed them something with no fat and proubly no nourshment. another thing i noticed was they were always wanting more food, i am now feeding less of the regular purina one and they are satisfied and not begging for more,

My beagle mix had gotten entirely too fat so I had to do something. My vet recommended the Science Diet weight loss food and after 2 months Lucky has slimmed down a good bit without any of the side effects you noticed. She also suggested (I mentioned it on another thread) that dogs LOVE green beans and they have almost no calories and are good for them. That is what he gets for a treat and I also mix 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup of beans in with his kibble. I also had used Beneful Weight management on another dog with no side effects either.

been feeding the wt management for atleast 11 months before i started noticing the problems, so i'm thinking it was from the long term use, i'm kind of afraid to try it again but, right now they are both at a good wt so by cutting down the amount of food (which they are satisified with) hopefully they won't put on excess wt. i do give my doggies veggies, they like the green beans, they also like carrots. If the need arises where i need to cut their wt down i'll will try the science diet you recommended.

I realize the premium dog foods are more expensive to purchase, but because they're not packed with fillers, you feed less, they get nothing but nutrition from what they eat & the bonus is they don't expel as much waste because they actually absorb all they eat.
Dakota needed to lose 20 lbs, it was my fault. We were using regular dog biscuits as training aids. Dog biscuits have a lot of calories, way too many to use as a training aid.
Dakota is a GSD, he now only takes in about 1-3/4 cups of dry Eukenuba a day, we supplement with a variety of healthy treats, carrots, bananas, green beans, even pineapple. I try very hard to keep a mental note of how many in a day. They're low in calories, but still you don't want to overdue it or create a bad habit where they "expect" treats for everything they do.
Dakota has lost weight nicely, slowly and in a healthy way. In the end the premium food doesn't cost any more because the lesser serving size causes it to go much further.
It's what my vet recommended, it worked well. We never reduced his calorie intake below what he should have had as a normal diet for his ideal weight. He never knew he was on a weight loss program. By feeding the calorie intake for his ideal weight, he wasn't taking in enough calories to maintain the elevated weight he was carrying.
The weight loss was slow but consistent. I didn't see it, the vet noticed, my kids noticed, I see him every day, I didn't notice. They had to put him on the scale for me to realize he'd lost between vet visits. Now that the issue is resolved, I don't expect to face it again. If we do, it will be my fault because I stopped paying attention.
Now if I could get him to understand the kitty cat left overs aren't for him, I could get away with giving him one or two extra rewards a day. lol

Three of my dogs are on weight management, and one of them lost his shine...they all shed excessively. About six months ago, I ordered this supplement that I'd been hearing about on a pet radio show, The Pet Show. It's Warren Eckstein's Hugs and Kisses. It's a nutritional aid for healthy skin and coat for dogs of all breeds. The first ingredient is lecithin which is great for shedding. It's also antioxidant rich and highly digestible. I highly recommend it. The shine is back and the shedding is minimal now without changing their diet. Even my eye allergies are much better because of less fur flying around the house.
You can go to thepetshow.com and click onto the online store and on the right, click onto Hugs and Kisses to check it out.

I had weight problems with my baby, and started using a Premium name weight product.
She started to poop more. One day she pooped 4 times in one hour. This, to me, was the final straw, so to speak.
I talked to the Vet about this. He told me dogs poop more with weight management dog food, because of extra fiber for bulk.
He then suggested that I cut down on regular dog food, give less treats and cut out human food.
Over a period of two weeks I cut down the regular dog food by 10%. I cut the treats down--I still give her around 80% of what I use to.
I couldn't cut down to 0 the human food (doggone dog wouldn't let me). She still gets boneless, skinned roast chicken breast and a little bit of cooked very lean hamburger meat. The vet tells me she is down to a very healthy weight, and looks great.
I didn't tell him that I still give her human food.
I don't feed her the Premium. She gets Purina, and loves it.
