View Full Version : Being spoofed. Can anyone help?

I registered a silly domain several years ago and have never done anything with it. Well, now I'm getting hundreds of "undeliverable mail" which is bouncing back into my real email box because someone is using the URL of that domain name to spam the heck out of people. Verio *says* they can't do anything about it. Anyone know what to do?

can you change the email address for your domain email delivery? If you don't use the domain for anything important right now, perhaps you can change your admin email to a disposable email or set up a email addy somehow that you would rarely if ever use?

Ms. Lavinia,

Not cyber tech savy so if my suggestion is off feel free to have a chuckle. I know persons pay a lot of money for rights to specific web id's. Maybe if you could sort thru the stuff to find out if someone else is using your acct# and its purpose such as a business, you could contact this person or company and demand, with a smile of course, compensation for their use of your name. Another choice would be to inform them they are going to be reported and investigated by a cyber detective.

I tried to do that Hale. For example, I might have given Verio the email Lavinia@asillyURL as my billing email. Whoever is spoofing me is using everything in the world like ajdfh@asillyURL or 84jngsjh@asillyURL to send out their spam and when what they send to other people bounces, it automatically comes to me as the account holder of "asillyURL". I'm flummoxed and Verio says there is nothing they can do. I told them to cancel my account, and they said they couldn't do that because of spoofing unless the spoofers used all the email names set up with my account. (I only have my one email name set up with that account.)

Thanks Hale.

I read the headers of the bounced mail CR, and *think* I found the originating mailer. I just started sending all the mail I was receiving to them and told them to "kindly" stop using my domain to spam people and it just increased the amount of carp I'm getting everyday.

Get this. They're sending out advertisements for diplomas. And using a goofy URL.

If you don't ever plan on using the URL (domain name) then you should let your contract expire. Or, you could put it up for sell and maybe make a buck or two.
Good luck!

Yes, just let the domain expire. Hopefully it won't be too long. In the meantime, you can set your email inbox to "exclusive" so only email from people on your safe-list will appear. The rest will go to the junk box.

Hello Lavinia. What a mess you got. My 1st suggestion suxed so this one most likely will to. Sorry in advance lol. Are you sure you don't have some kind of computer virus trojan whatnot. It almost sounds like your keystrokes are being copied. I forget exactly what that type of infection is called but I could make up a name if you like :) L1N666?

Good luck to you

Mr. Moto and Deb,

This is what I get back from Verio about letting my domain go:

Dear Lavenia,

Thank you for contacting Technical Support. We do apologize but we do need all contacts to come from the email address listed on the account.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us again at anytime.

I want to cancel this domain. Someone has been spoofing from it for several weeks now and I'm tired of getting all their returned emails.

Thank you,

Lavinia

This was my first correspondence with them:

Thank you for contacting the Verio Abuse Team.

What you are seeing is called "Spoofing". This is when someone uses another person's domain as the sender in their e-mail program. This unfortunately is a common practice used by spammers so that their mailboxes are not flooded by return e-mails for addresses they send to that do not exist. These people are not using your account and your account has not been compromised in any way. They are simply using your domain name in their e-mail program as their own. There is no way that this can be stopped.

Wow. I don't know the ins and outs, but if it's such a common problem, it seems Verio could do something about this, like prematurely expiring the domain name. Do you know when the name is due to expire? Did you try setting your inbox filter to exclusive?

It just renewed Mr. Moto. For a year. I'm going to check with them further. Thanks to you guys for your suggestions!

I haven't ever registered any domain in my life, and I have a bunch of undeliverable mail in my email box (sometimes a hundred in one day, sometimes 20 or so, sometimes none.) I didn't realize it, but they also show up in my "sent" box, where there is a "name" and subject, much like anyone else sending me an email. I have just delete those from the sent box and then delete them completely with all the others. I haven't a clue what to do about getting it to stop, tho. I just pray I get them all deleted and don't accidentally open one and set me up for a major virus.

I have my email to exclusive, and those things still show up in my inbox, and the others show up in my sent box. If it is coming from my email address, being exclusive wouldn't stop it, I think?

Does it automatically renew? And, do you have to pay to have this domain? Now, that would really suck--to have to pay for spoofing!!!

Oh, now I think I understand. Lavinia is using her domain name as her email. I message #4 she used "asillyURL.com" as an example. I think she can set a filter to stop all mail from asillyURL.com from entering her inbox.

Amy, you said you don't have a domain, but you're getting email from that's coming from "you"? Like, your email is 'amy@hotmail.com', and you're receiving email from 'amy@hotmail.com'?

It automatically renews Amy. $9.98 a year I think. I think Mr. Moto fixed my problem though. I'm going varmit hunting now.

Which is why I depend on your creative thinking so much. BTW, where were you when I updated to the latest FF and almost had a meltdown of the highest degree? Hm?

Sorry Lavinia. But Mr. Moto KNOWS I depend on him for these things.

Ha.. I'm no Jeff Levy but I like to help if I can. But don't put too much pressure on my "creative thinking" or I'll blow a fuse. I missed the FF thread somehow, but I guess it worked out. You can do lots of stuff in FF Tools.

What I get in the in box is undeliverable mail notifications. It does look different than the ones I get when I have actually sent something that isn't delivered.

In my "sent" box, I find various and sundry names like enerelial@ hotmail. com, or senerder @ hotmail.com. Strange words, not really names, and there will be maybe 10 or so from (or, maybe it is "to") each name. It usually says (No Subject) in the subject column.

All the other items in my "sent" box are listed by to whom I sent the email. "Jane Smith, Jack Jones" etc. with no email addy attached.

That's weird. But, come to think of it, I had a similar problem awhile back. Somebody was selling electronic equipment using my Hotmail address. Maybe it was a mixup on their part. The problem stopped after a few weeks. What do your messages say?

I did look @ one today. It was someone wanting someone to make $747 or some such. I didn't read it closely. Just some spam crap. I guess, since my computer didn't die, I could look @ a couple more and see what they say.

My email address was in the letter. But I can't remember in what context. Will have to pay closer attention to that, too.
