KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — A Muslim part-time model will be caned next week, becoming the first woman in Malaysia to be given the punishment under Islamic law, after she pleaded guilty to drinking beer, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
An Islamic court in July ordered that Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, 32, be lashed six times with a rattan cane after she was caught drinking alcohol in a raid on a hotel night club in eastern Pahang state last year.
Prosecutor Saiful Idham Sahimi said Kartika will be the first woman to be caned under Islamic law after she chose not to appeal the sentence.

Wow! So I guess if your Muslim it's a crime if you drink?

There are many Muslim's who own liquor stores in my area. I guess it's okay to sell it as long as you don't consume. :huh:

While we had prohibition, people were certainly jailed for alcohol sales, manufacture and transportation. (I have no doubt that there was the equivalent of caning in jail at the time in addition to losing freedom and fines.)

(Most) Mormons don't drink coffee, soft drinks, teas or alcohol and tobacco. I don't know if the punishment is so severe as eternal damnation, but I bet many a kid got whipped for getting caught partaking.

All this is NOT to say IN ANY WAY that what happened to her was right, just that there seems to be room for enlightenment in every country and religion and person. Barring enlightenment, I guess people need to follow the laws of their country. :shrug:

Apparently it is if they catch you. I have read articles about "underground" drinking in Muslim countries but you take a chance that if you are caught something bad will happen.

And this is the type law they want for the rest of the world as well, IMO.
