View Full Version : I found a puppy

My mother brought me a puppy that she found in the middle of the main street in our small town. It was just sitting there, unafraid of the cars whizzing by and beeping. She looks to be about 4/5 weeks old, not eating solid food...she tried to nurse on my male beagle! She is used to people and looks to have been cared for but there were no houses near where she was found. I went and got puppy milk and softened some puppy kibble and she lapped up the milk and nibbled some of the food. I cannot handle another dog! We have three here already. But I don't want anyone to get her that will not take care of her either.
I have a call in to the local foster animal place here. Since she is so little and cute, maybe they can find her a good home. Everyone keep your fingers crossed and say a prayer for her to find a good home.

Do you know what breed the puppy is?
We're looking for a puppy.
Thank you for caring about this sweet innocent creature.

The puppy seems to be fine. I am pretty sure it is a boy but my niece swears it is a girl. I just don't see any female parts and the "obvious" boy parts would not have come down yet.
I have called the three places in our little town that help find homes and two have called back and do not have room. The other has connections in neighboring areas to help find GOOD homes but we kept missing each other today. I will keep it until I can find a suitable place but I really cannot afford another dog and care for it as it needs to be done. But he/she is worming his/her way in..... I took it outside when it woke me at 5 am yesterday to be fed and it actually peed and pooped outside! But she has also made many little puddles inside so that may have just been luck.No problem, I have vinyl and tile floors. I am not sure what type of dog it is. It looks like my lab mix did but is a little smaller. That may just be the age though. It is black with a little white patch on its chest.

I am not sure...probably 100% mutt! It looks like my lab mix did but seems to be smaller but that may be the age. It does not have the HUGE paws my Lucy did though. It is Black with a white patch on its chest.
Are you anywhere close to us? I am in southwest Georgia near Florida and Alabama.

Big blessings to you and your mom Withay for taking her in. They seem to pop up in the weirdest places sometimes don't they? Here is to you being able to get her into a place that will take care of her.

We still have the puppy. My beagle mix does not like it at all. He runs from it and it runs after him and then stops when he growls. Lucky is a big wuss and never does anything but growl though I am separating them when I have to leave the house for safety's sake. I really to find it a home though....

Does it have a penis on its belly? If so then it is male. If all there is on the belly are tiny nipples it is female. Which one of these photos does the puppy look like.

I know that this sounded like a silly statement but though it did not look to have a penis, I could not see a vaginal slit either....so my confusion. The vet gave us a final answer today. She is a girl and weighs 3 and a half pounds and is 4-5 weeks old. We wormed her but it is too early for shots.
We went to the vet today though and I have decided to keep her. She has doggy lice and it will take 4 weeks to clear them up. By that time there is no way I will let her go.
Some of you may remember I lost a sweet dog named Lucy in April. This puppy resembles her though I think she will be smaller. I am calling her "Missy"; short for Mischief (sp?).

Congrats withay on your beautiful 3 lb. bouncing baby girl puppy!

Give Lucky a few extra love pats, he'll warm up to her eventually.

By Missy having a big brother, she should learn to be house trained much quicker, imo.

(give your mom extra (((hugs))) from me as well, for rescuing this sweet pup)

She has two big brothers, though one is only slightly bigger than her (a mini doxie) and a cousin who lives with us too (my niece's dog, a chihuahua). She is already following them outside to potty. I keep a puppy pad in the bedroom at night for the little dogs and she has also used it. She has also piddled on the floor some, though, but I am rpoud that she has at least begun to catch on. She followed them up the doggy steps to my bed also. I got the good news that doggy lice do not live on Humans and the flea tick stuff I use on the others would prevent them from getting doggy lice so we are okay. I made her a little den in a doggy carrier and she goes in there to sleep during the day. She has really just made herself at home! Lucky is sort of my odd Man out, he does not hang with the other dogs....Lucy was his buddy. Its really sort of funny to see her following right behind him.

Lucky has figured out that when he goes outside, if he runs in a zig-zag pattern, he can get away from her! He needs the exercise anyway.
Missy ate solid food today and pooped on the puppy pad. She comes when you call and seems to be starting to recognize her name. If I can only get her to understand that my fuzzy slippers are not siblings to jump on and wrestle with! And she barked back at Lucky.

It may seem like Lucky is running away from her, but I happen to know that he's teaching her valuable doggie skills. :tonguewag:

Good luck with those slippers! I buy slippers in bulk from WalMart cuz my dogs love them, especially when they start getting dirty. :w00t:

Missy sounds so adorable. I love the big congratunations. LOL
I miss having a dog. We've been dogless for about 4 years. My husband bemoans our dogless status more than I do though. All my life I heard people say it hurts too much to lose them. I finally lived long enough to understand what they meant. The only way to avoid the pain of losing a beloved pet is not to have any more. We'll always be dog lovers.

Chihuahuas were our favored breed. I love them so much. I miss The Girls.

Bless your new little addition. They're so much a part of our families. May she live long in good health.

I have a poster in my sewing room that says " A home without a dog is like a garden without flowers." That says it for me.
My niece has a long-haired black chihuahua and they live with me. My mother has three chihuahuas and my sister has one so we are a family with lots of them.
Missy is almost completely off milk. And last night she went to the back door and whined and barked. When I opened it, she went out and pottied. Either BIG coincidence or she is really catching on fast to house training! I really hope so...that is my least favorite part of puppyhood.

I'm so sorry for your pain. I understand about the pain of losing them, but I think the happiness and love gained is always, always worth it all.

There are so very many animals languishing all alone in shelters. Sure they get food, water, vet care, et al, but they need homes and a family. I encourage you to visit your animal shelter and find someone to love again. Maybe something other than a dog, like a kitty.

I feel that there are never any guarantee's about the length of time we have on this earth to share with anyone. It's all subject to change in an instant.

Since my heart attack I've made a concerted effort to embrace the time I have and share it with family, friends, animals and gardens. Otherwise, I ask myself, "What's the use?"

Missy discovered her bark today and is now barking BACK at the bigger dogs. She also began eating puppy kibble...she LIKES it and whined for more. She also had discovered the toys which is driving Oscar crazy because she just leaves them everywhere. He is a little obsessive compulsive and wants the toys put back in his crate when they are not being played with! I had forgotten how much fun a puppy is.

Yep, and Oscar is a Mini Doxie (he only weighs 8 lbs) and Missy has grown so much that she is already nose to nose with him! He is longer (of course) but within a few weeks she will be bigger than him.
Missy had another bath with the medicated shampoo today. As soon as she saw the tub she knew what was coming and started crying. But I was able to comb a bunch of loose hair and dead skin off of her and she seems so much more comfortable tonight. She climbed in one of the many dog beds and has been sleeping all evening. She also got her first collar today and after shaking her head a few times, seems to have accepted it. I will take it off when I leave the house until I am sure she won't try to get it off. I have found that if I collar dogs when they are little, they accept a collar better....it's just part of their life.

I can't tell you how much this cracks me up! I have a dog that is slightly OCD about the toys being where they shouldn't be. SHE thinks they belong ONLY in the family room and the other girls think they can be in the dining room, kitchen, outside deck and yard :scared: .

When Candy sees "her" toys outside she just about spazzes out and tries to collect them all. :tonguewag:

ITA about getting them used to a collar at an early age. My dogs hate when I take their collars off to be brushed. They fret until their collar is back where it belongs - on their neck.

Obviously my dogs have issues.

You are not going to believe this....my sister called me this afternoon. She has a florist on the downtown square here and a puppy had followed a man from the other side of the square. She said he was kicking the puppy and it was raining and she was getting in the street. She had called a local agency to come get it that finds homes but was afraid it would get hit before they got there. She asked me to put it in my (fenced) back yard. So I did. Then I left to go to the bank and mentioned I had a puppy to find a home for. The bank manager said he has to consult his wife but he will probably take her tomorrow. It started raining hard so I have let her in the laundry room. After I let her in and fed her, she laid down on the rug I put out there and has gone to sleep. It seems I am turning into the local "lost dog" person!
I cannot keep this one though.

It was an easy night with the 2nd puppy. She slept all night in the laundry room. the banker was not able to take her but the family of a woman that works for my sister was looking for a puppy so they took her. They are a nice family and take care of their pets so I feel good about letting her go. If there are any problems with keeping her, they will let me know. Whew! I really do not have room for another dog!

Thanks. I feel like Lucy sent her to me...she even looks sort of like Lucy at that age. Lucy was black with a white chest and polka dots on her chest (her mother was a Dalmation) while Missy just has a small white tuft of fur on her chest. She is a little spitfire though. Lucy was an only child when she was a puppy. This one barks and growls back at the bigger dogs! My mini doxie is the Alpha (go figure!) and will protect her if the other two get mouthy. Missy had a check-up today and was finally old enough to get her first shots. She has gone from 3.2 pounds to 8.8 pounds...almost tripled her weight in a month! Vet said she looks great and agrees she is a lab mix of some sort. Her baby fuzz is falling out and her shiny grown up coat is coming in. She now knows what "no" means and drops what she has or stops what she is doing when she is told no. I have started putting a leash on her also. Right now she is just dragging it so she will get used to having one on. She adjusted to the collar immediately..shook her head once or twice and that was it. She discovered that there is something following her this week and has been trying her best to catch the thing but it is always just out of her reach. Yep, she's chasing her tail!

Missy is continuing to thrive. Her coat is that beautiful slick and shiny black except for her two white spots on her chin and chest. She is eating 1 and a half cups of kibble twice a day. She is still piddling some in the house, mostly at night but only after she has "filled" the puppy pad. I always leave a clean one down when I go to bed but if she goes to use it a second time before I wake up, it overflows! And she has not poo'd in the house in about a week. She literally looks bigger every day. She can now stand on top of my mini doxie and the bottom of her clears his top... we call it double decker dogs! But she is still submissive to all of the other three. They growl and she rolls over and shows them her belly. She is trying to figure out how to jump up on the furniture and it is sooo funny. She watches the others but she jumps straight up not up and towards the chair or sofa. Then she looks at the others and tilts her head and whines, like "What am I doing wrong?" My SIL (she lives with me) says that she recognizes the sound of my car and runs to the door when she hears me. She definitely knows she is mine.
