Murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom

Hugh Christopher Newsom, Jr., 23, and Channon Gail Christian, 21, were a couple from Knoxville, Tennessee. According to a Tennessee grand jury, they were both raped and murdered after being kidnapped early on the morning of January 7, 2007. Their vehicle had been carjacked.[1][2] Five suspects have been arrested and charged in the case.[3] The grand jury indicted four of the suspects on counts of murder, robbery, kidnapping, rape and theft, while one final suspect has already been convicted of federal charges as accessory after the fact to carjacking

Most judges expect to hear a fib or two from people hoping to get out of jury duty, but a judge warned Knox Countians on Tuesday not to lie to get on the panel that will decide torture slaying alleged ringleader Lemaricus Davidson's fate.

"Be honest with yourself, and be honest with us," Criminal Court Judge Richard Baumgartner told a room full of residents summoned for jury orientation in Davidson's upcoming trial. "Put down (on questionnaires) what you think, not what you think we want to hear or what you think will get you off or on this case."

Judge Richard Baumgartner and attorneys for both sides have gone over all 386 questionnaires filled out by potential jurors on Tuesday for Davidson's trial.

The court says around 250 people in that jury pool will be brought back on September 21 when the selection process continues.

For Lemaricus Davidson's case, the AOC says $67,468.62 has been pulled from the indigent defense fund so far. George Thomas' attorneys have pulled $115,354.77 and Vanessa Coleman's defense has cost the state $7,444.00. Coleman's parents were paying for her defense attorneys until May 2009

Jury selection will begin at 9 a.m. on September 21 with a group of 25 jurors. Another group will be called in that afternoon. That same process will continue through Thursday until each juror is questioned by Judge Baumgartner and the attorneys involved in the case.

I think they have enough DNA evidence never mind the fingerprints, but fingerprint evidence is not often challenged, there is a case from Scotland which is often cited where a policewomans print was found at a crime scene even though she never went into the scene, and the states experts all said the print was hers, when it was examined further it was not hers,

This is an interesting article stating that DNA from skin cells was found on some pieces of evidence - that they have not been able to match up.

Daphe Sutton & Davidson could not be ruled out as the sources of the DNA. I wonder if the DNA is an incomplete profile - that's why they're unable to rule Sutton & Davidson out.

The jury is made up of seven women and five men. Eleven of them are white. One is a black man.

Six alternates, three white men and three white women, were also chosen for the jury in the racially-charged case.

The defense was hoping for more black jurors, basing that choice on the stereotyped belief that many African Americans are against the death penalty.

6 News legal expert Greg Isaacs said the defense isn't surprised with the jury makeup.

"If you wanted and fought to have a jury from Knox County, you know from the beginning that your choices are limited," said Isaacs.

The judge said the jurors will be sequestered the night before opening arguments, which are due to start on October 19. They have a wait of a little more than two weeks.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Lemaricus Davidson's defense attorneys have received death threats aimed at themselves and their families, Volunteer TV's Gordon Boyd reports from the courthouse.

Attorneys were apparently threatened by phone and email. Those making the threats supposedly questioned why someone would defend someone accused of such a violent crime.

Also Friday, Judge Richard Baumgartner ruled that DNA evidence from two unidentified male individuals can be used during Davidson's trial. The questionable DNA does not match any of the four men charged in connection with this case, nor does it match Newsom.

Torture-slaying suspect Vanessa Coleman is officially back in the prosecutorial lineup, but it is a trial date written in pencil lest the state's highest court opts to snatch up the case first.
