View Full Version : Why do spend time at In Session?

I spend time here for several reasons.

1. I can learn about a lot of interesting news and stories that others have found in other places. I read two newspapers and lots of magazines too, but the computer is where I get more and more of my information.

2. The discussion on the threads is also interesting. People's opinions and personal experiences sometimes add a lot to the original story. I'm amazed at the knowledge some people have, and their abilities to find more information and post it.

3. I enjoy the varieties of political perspective. I know people who have many different religious/political perspectives, but I don't always talk politics or religion with them for various reasons. For example, I love my Mormon neighbors who have a Reagan calendar year after year, but I am very cautious discussing politics with them because it might affect our good neighborly relations if we made our political differences a major feature of our interactions, and they seem to feel the same way. My dad was ultraconservative and sometimes interesting to talk to about things, but he would get into lecture mode, plus he died recently. People I know who have the similar views don't challenge me to think about my positions as much. I understand the tendency to only have contact with people or media sources that reinforce one's beliefs, but I don't feel satisfied with that, although it would save me some discomfort and aggravation.

4. I like the practice writing, plus it encourages me to think things through enough to be coherent. ( I can see the snarky comments coming on this one) I can't tell how many people actually read any of these comments, but it gives me a little of the satisfaction I get when I get a letter to the editor published.

5. I enjoy "seeing" some of the same people over time. While I don't really feel like any of these people are personal friends, it still somehow counts as a form or social contact, from the comfort of my own home.

6. I am instructed by the emotional tidal waves that sometimes go through the board, and how easy it is for discussion to degenerate into buzzwords. I know I do this too; it's easy to slip into.

7. I've learned that discussions don't have to be overly emotional or confrontational, no matter how controversial the subject matter or who're you're talking to. That taking certain kinds of bait is always a bad idea. And people can change their minds about things, if only a little bit.

I like that special insight I can only get from those who want to remain in the shadows.

When I first started following crime cases, I enjoyed the wealth of information from people with different backgrounds and locations. But eventually I found they were not necessarily consistent. As with people who are involved with a case, those watching the case, seem to have the same disagreements.

But the most interesting views come from those who only express themselves because of their knowledge that they have a hidden identity.

Force of habit.

That's the truth. I was very involved in the old CTV Boards and have just hung out here because that's where my fingers go.

I do get rather frustrated at times with mod decisions but that is the price one pays to have a supervised Board.

I've had some really interesting conversations and would like to think I have made some friends here and off the Board.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Not just referring to Insessions, but I like boards because all the normal cues like race, body shape, gender, good looks vs not-so-good looks, economic status....all of that is hidden, and what we have to agree/disagree with are ideas. I find it really interesting to evaluate the ideas of someone who I don't put in any category until I "see" what they think.

I originally started visiting the Old CTV boards back after the Scott Peterson crimes and arrest...I was originally working on a thesis exploring the Social Impact of technology....

but I got interested and I did meet some great people

I still come here first of all, to talk to some of those great people, and secondly, to get other peoples views of some of the subjects and issues that interest me.

Because this is like a one stop shop place.......I love the trials and discussing them, but I also like discussing other topics and I don't have to look all over the net to find a discussion. Mainly the moderation.....I complain about CW sometimes, but I'm sure glad she's here,so things don't get too out of hand or "x" rated as some boards have. It's home!

I'm comfortable here. So many nics, some I have never even posted with but they are familiar faces none the less. I miss many of the nics that I have seen come and go..open court use to be such a happening place. Starting to realize the # of the nics I no longer see

I have been asked to join other boards since I have joined here, but I like the idea this is now and was ran by trusted reputable news organizations.

I'm hoping with this change in what Oct/Nov that had been previously mentioned here on open court or on the feedback forum with HLN taking a new lead role in the trials that this board will kick back into its "glory days" that I found it in during Anna Nicole. So I'm sort of coasting along.

I didn't even know adults spoke on message brds until 2 1/2 years ago! I thought it was only a place where teens talked about sports or music, and you had to warn them about adults. No clue until I looked something up on the internet and was sort of directed here, wow it was seeing OZ for the first time!

I'm always amazed at the ability of the posters to find such variety of information on trials or those involved with them. The fact that we have had several times family member or friends connected to cases that have turned to this board such as on missing forums or trials... even the more infamous ones.

I'll ask a question of those that have been on here for many years is this as it has always been between the bigger trials or is this unusual... like everyone left for intermission and we are still the ones in the arena waiting for the 2nd half of the show to begin?

I'm surprised that I didn't think about the anonymity angle when I wrote the OP. It's both a good and a bad thing. Since this board is heavily moderated its mostly a good thing, IMO. Also since posters can possibly be tracked down from their IP address I don't feel completely anonymous.
It does make me feel freer to talk about things I would hesitate to tell some people, and I enjoy it when others do the same thing.
This makes me aware of how many secrets we all walk around with for whatever reason. My mother has been telling me things lately that happened long ago. I don't know if this because she wants to divulge them before she dies or if she only now feels comfortable telling me these things or if she just got around to really thinking about those things again. I think being able to post things anonymously is potentially therapeutic, since people like to share their secrets even if they don't want to tell it to many people in their "real" lives. I put quotes on "real" because I was just realizing how free and present I feel online, while most of the time in real life I don't feel like I can really say what I'm thinking.

I started coming here to follow the Caffey murders, which were closely followed on the Daily BS also. The owner of that site got banned here, but I stuck around. I've never watched any courtroom coverage but maybe I will one of these days.
The first message board I went to was about the first Matrix movie, sponsored by WB. The movie was discussed in minute detail, and the tangents went far and wide. That boards been gone for years, but I post a few other places, particularly the Huffington Post.
There is definitely more of a feeling of community here. If I post something provocative I'm pretty sure to get a response, positive or negative, and I enjoy knowing that certain people have read my posts.

Coming to InSessions is like opening a living, breathing novel/documentary/health/cookbook everyday.

Ask any question and you get insightful, well-thought out answers from experienced, educated people. The folks here are truly some of the most powerful and gifted prayer warriors I've ever encountered. They always send positive energy your way if you ask.

I learn something new every, single day and I've known some of the posters here for many a year. Some folks I get along with and some...well...not so much, but CW keeps things on an even keel and I admire her for that.

The foolishness I've encountered while visiting other boards has always been kept to a minimum since she took over here at CTV/InSessions. People are no longer allowed to bog down converstaions with useless, petty sniping. No more days and days of constant uproar, insults, and hijacking of threads by a few troll-bullies who think they are clever by putting others down.

I like the education factor and the fantastic topics available here. It's all good, clean, decent reading for the most part and always well worth the read. :read: The humor here is priceless, too, btw.

For this great gift...I have to say, "Thanks everyone!" :seeya:

I like this board because I chose to live in BFE, in fact, I'm the only resident on my street (which is really a circle). I can come here & converse with those interested in the same cases as I am.
Plus, most here are within 10 years of my age.

And like here in Open Court today I asked a question that was driving me crazy & soon Cornblossom (to the rescue) answered it for me.

And like most of us that have OCD about crime cases 'our family & friends just don't understand us' or think we're strange. :sneaky:

I had pretty much sworn off computers for anything but work because I just didnt have anybody online that I thought understood, and made some bad choices webwise .....I came back here to follow the Caylee case and met some old friends that are still here....been here since the Laci and Conner Rocha case.......and made a couple of new ones....

You nuts managed to crack me up again!

When I first came here, I had no intention of staying. I just signed on quickly, using my "real name" so I could ask a couple of questions in the Caylee case. I had zero experience with MB's and thought I would forget a nic, although now I realize although I would forget, my computer would not. When I found myself coming back, I asked CW if I could change my nic and was told in no uncertain terms NO!. So if any of you happen to be in a certain Mayberryesque small Southern town in the US and start asking random people about doctor_J, you'll find me pretty quickly.

My first impression about anonymity was that it brought out the worst of people. Over time, I've come to realize there are advantages also. I do appreciate the moderation, especially after visiting a few other sites that are allowed to run amok. Actually the science and psychology of anonymity on the web has become a new interesting study of mine.

All in all, I've enjoyed my stay and have made lots of friends here. I feel like I "know" a certain group and always look for their comments on a thread. Just when I think I know what they'll say, they surprise me.

Seriously, for years I lurked during trials I was interested in but when Caylee was killed, I was hooked. I "knew" Casey (by her actions) and I have to see this thing out.

Also, I don't get out much and I find a lot of fellowship here and geeze, you can find out almost anything you every wanted to know about anything here, or at least be sent somewhere where someone does know.

Every night before I go to bed I kneel on the floor with my little hands folded beneath my chin and say, "G-d, will you please let Miss Coldwater see that I'm teasing today and not really insulting other posters? Amen."

I like being able to find people who want to "talk" about things that the people in my real life circle aren't interested in. One of the cool things about the internet is that you can find people who are interested in whatever you're intereted in at the moment, if not here then someone else.
I just realized that that unfortunately is true for people with sick interests also. People interested in child porn can find it with a few clicks, same with other creepy stuff. The combination of access and the feeling of community probably makes their perverted interests seem less abnormal then in the days when they had to skulk around more.

CelticDawn

eventually (hopefully) the child porn and snuff sites will be OUTLAWED, but people NEED to be able to have a sense of belonging and not be judged for their interests.....as long as they dont fall into some of the sicker areas .....

I love the way you "meet" people from all over the world and can get insights about situations from those far away. Case in point..Madeline McCann. We have posters form the UK who kept us up to date on how things were doing/proceeding in the UK. Some info we did not get much airtime on.

Also when William Defoe's wife (The Amnityville Horror) was on line telling us what they believed was the truth. Interesting to read even though you may not agree. Most interesting to get insight to a woman who married a man in jail. Most of us whould scratch our head and say why do women do that? So hearing how/why they do that was eye opening, (I still shake my head though)

What Spyder said (Post #16) plus I once read a surprise is the most enjoyable thing to humans. I think that's true. Anticipation of clicking on a link and seeing what others have to contribute. Humans are group beings and enjoy the company of one another. In business I have to present myself to clients. Even so called social events there is a professional persona I'm expected to present because earning a living depends on it. It's not that I'm phony. I love people and they generally like me but they're always the customer and that can be taxing and cause overload.

Here is a place of relaxation where I can be myself in conversation. To tone down the volume as it were. In talking to others I think we learn about ourselves too. It's all good. Occasionally I wonder if we'd recognize each other in a meeting hall based on how our minds work. I think most of us would. ETA: The surprise element. Each post is like opening the door on an Advent calendar.

That's what's so great about the Internet. Since it's inception, for the first time in history people can communicate so easily and it doesn't matter the circumstances or where we live on the planet. I'm touched by your honesty. Yes, I still say shut in. LOL Nothing wrong with it, so we should keep the description. It's so charming you feel better than you once did. Horray!

I've been spending some time on Facebook finally. It's interesting to compare with In Session and other anonymous boards and blog/comment sites.
On Facebook its all pretty friendly and cozy and not anonymous.
IS and other message boards are definitely more challenging intellectually and politically. But I must admit the topics are sometimes not very enticing to me if I'm not in the mood to tangle with my partisan opponents. Given the nature of some of the topics and posts here I sometimes wonder why I come here at all. The posts are sometimes completely predictable and no one seems to ever change their position on anything no matter what anyone says.
But OTOH I still value being directly exposed to the other side of any and all issues. And there are things I wouldn't say on Facebook that I would say here.
Will Facebook become a big deal for me? I can't tell yet, but I must admit that knowing that these are people I know in real life does make it pretty appealing. Those people actually know me and care about me, while my anonymous "friends" are like dust in the wind.

Well that is good news - but I'm surprised if the canasta player knew the woman's address. Here we are close friends if we even know which State someone lives in.

Then I came back here and in a strange way it feels like my internet home. I remember alot of the names of posters here and glad to see you guys and gals from so long ago. I came here when I was almost a shut in [do they still say that?]I love the trials and the people on here are terrific. Some one said you can ask things you can't ask your family,so true.
I have laughed and cried and I feel so much better than I did when I came here so long ago.

When the internet first started happening I thought a lot of how much it would of been of great benefit to my disabled Granny, also how much of her knowledge could have been saved & documented to teach others.

During the Laci case I was legally blind & only had limited use of one eye. It's sad to type but that case took my mind off my illness & all the eye surgeries.

One of my first community services when I moved out here was to volunteer to teach basic computer to the seniors at the Senior Center. Only a few cared to learn until I showed them about posting on the CTV board about the Laci case which most were very interested in.

The center had one old computer & I donated one still they had to take turns voicing their opinions on the board. I was worried if one got banned the rest wouldn't be able to post. Thankfully Coldwater only banned the nicks.

Out of all the boards on the internet this is the one I log onto most every day. It has a little bit of everything.

I stay here because..... actually, I don't know why. LOL. I've met a number of good people here, I just wish I knew their new nics. I miss a lot of the old nics cause people kept getting banned. (me included.) LOL.

According to what I read,it will just be Jamie,Jack and Ashley that will be no more.New Anchors will be coming on when they move to Atlanta.

I think all the good anchors have moved on. Lisa is now doing guest shots for Nancy's show. HLN is certainly taking over the CTV "vacancy" IMO. I watch Nancy and Jane faithfully every night cause InSession (the channel) is relatively useless.

Hi Angellaw! :seeya:

I have been trying Facebook and realize that one of the things I like about IS is that people actually do discuss interesting things here. Facebook is fun and polite and I know who I'm talking to, but no one wants to talk about crime cases in detail or read more than a few sentences at a time on a serious topic.

Both things have their value, but Facebook and the like aren't going to replace this sort of message board for me. If I want a friendly response I can go to Facebook, if I want to discuss serious or controversial stuff I can go here.
