The Star Tribune confirms what the blog Dump Bachmann has been reporting for weeks: Rep. Michele Bachmann's son Harrison has joined Teach For America, part of what the Minnesota Republican considers a dreaded government re-education camp program called AmeriCorps. Back in April, Rep. Bachmann warned of the expansion of the program, designed to get young people involved in community service: "I believe when it's all said and done, this service that -- I believe that there's a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service. And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go and work in some of these politically correct forums. It's very concerning. It appears that there's a philosophical agenda behind all of this, and especially if young people are mandated to go into this." She added, "As a parent, I would have a very, very difficult time seeing my children do this." Star Tribune columnist Jon Tevlin writes that "when Bachmann issued her screed, her son might have already been accepted, and certainly would have applied. Ouch."

Speaking of Palin:
Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin's standing among the American public has plummeted in recent weeks, as the potential 2012 presidential candidate has weighed in forcefully (and inaccurately) into the health care debate.A new CNN Poll shows that Palin's favorability rating has fallen seven percentage points since May, from 46 percent to 39 percent. Anything under the 50 percent mark is considered problematic, especially when the politician is a known quantity (only five percent of the public said they had never heard of the former governor). Fully 48 percent of those polled said they had an unfavorable impression of Palin.

It appears that craziness does not run in the family. Lucky for him.

Bachmann is the new Palin to the Lefties?
:confused:A person who says almost entertainingly stupid, false, and extreme things? Almost entertaining, because some people actually believe her. That's what Bachmann is.
No comment on the actual story - that one of Bachmann's stupid, false, or extreme statements ends up being something her son chooses to do? A program to help people is claimed to be a reeducation camp (I remember when she was spouting that bit of vile rhetoric) - and thankfully for those being helped, not even her own son believes it.

Thought you were talking about Joe Biden until I got to the punch line, such as it was.
:laugh::laugh::laugh:
I think he is beyond reeducation.

I don't see anything wrong with a Mother not agreeing with what her children chose to do and saying so. Since when is free thought and free speech remiss in the USA?
Personally I believe the college age kids who never worked or ran a business helped him into office and that they have been brainwashed in the education system. The liberals know young minds are the easiest to mold and they've had a field day with them for decades. This woman isn't the first to have this opinion.
She doesn't like AmeriCorps and believes it may someday become manditory. Who's to say she's wrong?
Maybe some people do want a more socialistic government than we've had in the past. So be it. However it's still legal for those of us who don't agree with it to say so.
Maybe this mother is right and those against her are wrong. Who's to say for certain?

Adalena, my daughter was an AmeriCorps volunteer before she started college. They did things like tutor at-risk kids, helped build parks, at one point she even learned how to drive a bulldozer. She is one of the most apolitical people I know. Americorps reinburses part of your tuition, depending on how long you serve. She met other kids from all over the country, and it was a good experience for her. She went on to get her degree, and has now taught kindergarten for seven years. Please people, don't believe all this scare tactic stuff that's being put out. You are being had (said respectfully).

I'm having trouble seeing a connection between my post and your reply, but don't worry about it.......never mind.
You launched off into how happy it made you and yours. I explained myself clearly. Just because the program made you and yours happy it didn't for the parent in the Op's link. People differ as I've already said. I don't believe you don't know what that means.

Adalena, I never said anything about it making me and mine "happy". Also, if I'm not mistaken, the parent (Ms. Bachmann), did not experience anything connected with AmericaCorps, since she was not yet aware that her son had even applied. The program is completely voluntary, and even has a component for older Americans called Vista to volunteer their time in their own local area. I've thought about inquiring about it, but I'll be kept busy helping to care for my newborn grandson in December. I was brought up to believe that whatever I do for the least of my brethren, I do unto Christ. This was taught to me by my parents and the Sisters of Mercy.
I'm done here.

I agree it's a great program, like a domestic peace corp (which started in the 60s) community service is a good thing and it helps for college tuition, for those that don't choose the military. It's an other option for both young women and men.
I guess Bachman's son has chosen to teach in the program. Her description of Americorp is disgusting IMHO. But then she has some very weird notions. from what I've heard her say.

Well the son has different ideas than his Mom or Dad? Hello, was raised Republican, never strayed away from parents, or the "church" til I had a college education, adult, married, gave birth, raising kids, and on my own, finally!
Then I turned Democrat around age 30ish, way back in 1973. Had it up to the hilt with war, Nixon, Watergate, and endless "commisioins" on evil GOP stuff. (and that was before "info cable." Decided my parents and the church were soooooo old school, so behind the times..... as the song said/says: Dont think twice babe, don't look back, . IMHO

I wonder if Bachmann will speak out over time about how her sons re-education process is coming along.

I am mystified by the notion that AmeriCorps is a "re-education camp". What happened to Bush41's Thousand Points of Light thing, or was that just for private charities? Is this type of government-sponsored service organization somehow frightening to some people now? Is it the distinct possibility of rubbing shoulders with some non-conservatives? Is it that Obama encouraged people to do more volunteering to help their communities?
My understanding of AmeriCorps is that the pay is tiny, when there is any. Objecting to AmeriCorps perhaps harks back to calling WPA "We Piddle Around", even though many of their projects are still standing and being useful all over the US. Giving a few people a job who are willing to work hard seems like a decent idea to me.
I would love to see any materials that demonstrate the "re-education camp" angle.

I watched half of the video for City Year but is it the program Bachmann's son is in? Do you love or hate the video or the program itself?
Did you post it because you thought it seems like a "re-education camp" video? I didn't find it objectionable.
