I am so excited to write this: My Baby CAG (congo African Grey) is here.
After waiting 20 years to finally bring one into our lives, she is here.

Cherry came home Sunday, and although I'm most upset with the things the breeder told me (which were not true) I am going to do all I can to do my best by her. I'm sure that I will be able to work with her slowly and gain her confidence.

She was not socialized, which the breeder said she was. She was in a tiny room, with no exposure. I was mad. I could have walked away but she looked healthy so I took her. Her first check up is in two weeks with Avian Cert Vet. There are not many around the rural area I live in. OMG.

She didn't eat for 48 hours, and it was scary. All she would eat was grapes. Well, finally I took her out put her on the playgym, and a bowl of seed fell over and she sat there foraging for 3 hours on the floor of the gym. (YAY) and Now again today, she is doing the same, she really enjoys this. Yesterday she allowed me to scratch her head three times and I could have cried.

She is very clumsy which also tells me she did nothing but sit in a small cage on a perch. Oh, it broke my heart! But, she has a mansion cage and is learning to get around it. You guys she is so beautiful! I will upload some photos after this week is over, with vacations, custody battle in family court and the arrival of my newest baby so much is happening. I just wanted to tell you all how excited we are.

Our other egg baby the Green Cheeked Conure is doing really well, and after 1 month with us she is TALKING already!
This morning she tried to whisper to me.
The grey and the conure are seperated, but can see each other. Well, I'm just so exicted and so nervous too. She is a leary CAG, the grey and I'm mad at the breeder for being so misleading. I cried for days, but I know in my heart I can provide the best for Cherry. she does step up, but she also falls a lot. Her wings were not clipped properly so I had to re clip them correctly. I am using the towel if she feels at all scared after taking a tumble from her perches and just sitting with her. She doesn't even know how to walk from room to room on your hand.
There is nothing worse than finding out that an animal is being sold as a commodity only. That broke my heart.
She passed my health test though, and DH said "well, we've rescued her from there". Maybe the breeder felt she was doing right by her, but IMO she did not know how to handle a large parrot. She was afraid of her. and used yelling techniques regarding her biting.....(sigh)

I'll keep you updated on her progress and post pics when I can. I miss everyone but summer seems to take over and there just isn't time to post as much or follow cases. And, there seem to be so many horrible cases this year.

Anyway, Here's to Cherry!! The CAG and her new life with US! She's already stolen my heart. I feel like a new mom.

Welcome Cherry. Oh I wish I could see the little tiny fledgling. It's been a long time since I had a little baby cockatoo, she was a wobbler as well. Now she struts around like she in the Head Flockmaster, LOL.

All in good time, takes awhile for them to adjust to new surroundings and noise. My African grey will lick my finger then give me a bite, not hard just enough to let me know he still is not comfortable around humans. Click, click of the beak. It's been 4 yrs. Don't know where he came from, so many owners, wild caught I think, no band.

Enjoy, I'll be watching for baby pics

I'm so glad you got Cherry out of that hell-hole she was being forced to live in. Poor little sweetie. I hate the thought of what so many poor creatures have suffered and continue to suffer at the hands of ignorant, stupid, money-hungry, arrogant, merciless people.

Just keep on loving her and don't forget to play eye games with her. Peek-a-boo and blinking were some of my birds' favorite games and often brought them around more quickly. They respond best when not stared at, like a predator would stare. So I blink more often when I'm playing with them.

Alas, I can't have birdies anymore. I have very, naughty kitties who would insist upon inviting them over for lunch.

Congratulations! Sounds like you are just what Cherry needed. Looking forward to the pics.

My parakeet, Emmy, discovered she could reach through the bars of the bottom of her cage to grab the paper. She spends hours grabbing & shredding the paper so I tore a strip about 2 inches wide & 8 inches long & laid it in the bottom of her cage. She has spent all day dragging that piece of paper around the cage. She drapes it over her head then struts around the cage. She puts it in a corner, works to get it arranged just right, steps back to admire her work for a while then drags it to another corner & repeats the steps. She draped it over her farris wheel toy then got mad when it fell off.

She sure entertained me all day, lol. She wore herself out with all of her decorating with her new found treasure strip of paper. By 6 PM she was on her swing, head tucked under her wing sound asleep.

I'm not familiar with the story behind this, so if I am wrong here, I apologize in advance.

I see that you are taking Cherry to go get a check up and that's great...there are a LOT of unscrupulous "breeders" out there, that are actually smuggling the baby birds from their homelands, and selling them illegally here, without a quarantine, and most often very sick. The conditions you describe Cherry having been in prior to you getting her, sound very much like smuggling operations to me. My family has raised, bred and sold birds for many years, and have come across many smuggled birds. One we kept as a pet, A Yellow Nape Amazon, (gorgeous bird) had a severe respiratory infection...he lived much longer than expected, but did succumb to it eventually.

I'm am sure that you did your homework before purchasing, I am just posting this to say "be cautious"! Birds are wonderful pets, and it is sad to fall in love with them, only to find out they were abused, or not quarantined, and found to be ill.

I hope that all checks out well with Cherry, and that she has no illnesses, or ill effects from her treatment before you got her. (watch for feather plucking as a sign of stress)

Greys are some of the best talkers, and loving birds, once hand tamed. (which he/she should have been if born to a breeder) I am sure you will be a great bird mommy!

Hugs to you and Cherry!

PS Greys are also very LOUD screechers LOL Have fun with that!
