Crime is down for the first half of the year compared to 2008.

In six major categories: homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and vehicle theft, crime is down from four to 30 percent over last year.

You might find these numbers especially surprising since most experts say crime goes up during tough economic times.

So who deserves the credit? Chief Roper cites his hard working force, increased community support, but he also attributes the drop to another group.

"We've got people praying for us everyday."

...

Chief Roper sends out emails to Prayer Force United members, encouraging them with improved stats and updating them on specific areas that need prayer.

Most recently, Chief Roper and Prayer Force United took on the summer homicides.

"Typically during the summer, homicides go up," says Roper.

...

So far this summer, stats show an almost 50 percent drop in homicides.

...

The next Prayer Force United Prayer Walk is coming up Saturday August 22nd at the Christian Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Collegeville at 10:45 am.

Wow!

Uh...I live in Birmingham.

Attributing the slight drop in a high crime rate to prayer seems odd and a bit inappropriate.

At least it was Chief Roper who said it. He's not crazy.

Leapin' Larry the mayor is insane.

Hi LizzieCat- I live in B'ham too.

I actually was glad to read that crime was down and hope it continues that way. Who am I to doubt that praying for specific areas is helping, it sure can't be hurting to do that. Maybe if more cities decided to take that on, they'll show a decrease as well.

I sure didn't vote for Larry.

It's yet to be seen if there is change in other types of crime since the Free the Hops passed.

(Still wishing we'd get a dog park- dogs aren't allowed at East Lake Park- I apparently never saw the sign before, lol)

East Lake Park, huh?

We live on roughly the same side of Birmingham then.

lol, wow- guess we do!

I just learned over the weekend that beer is now on tap at Bottle Stop.

Guess you can buy a milk jug to go, lol.

which has nothing to do with religion- except maybe for beer enthusiasts.
