with the high price of going to the movies or even renting we need to give our opinions of latest flicks to go see or to rent.
I rented "Coraline" I was really looking forward to seeing it...I was very disapointed...it was so ugly hubby and I had nightmares and were old..emagine what a child would have? It was very disturbing...from old fat lady in bakini to the bug chairs...very ugly.

Glad you started another Movie thread. I watch my share, but haven't the last couple of weeks. Has anyone seen G-Force? I wanted to see it the weekend it opened but couldn't. It's not my normal favorite kind of movie, but looked fun. LOL.

I saw Frozen River on DVD. I really enjoyed it. It's an independent film about a dirt poor mother of 2 who explores transporting illegal aliens across the Canadian border. One of the most realistic movies I have ever seen.

Loved Slumdog and Benjamin Button!!

I have been using Netflix's new Instant Watch feature and have zipped thru the first and second season of "Dexter." I love this series.

Then, onto The Tudors, which is also good, tho a bit raunchy for my tastes. Henry the 8th was a psychopath, imo.

Watched "A Man for all Seasons" again, for a more thoughtful view of Thomas Moore.

I use ON DEMAND and frequently watch stuff that is five years old, like seeing "Wedding Crashers" and "You, Me and Dupree" for the first time about three months ago. Both of which are so funny.

Hi ya Scamp
I recently watched Dexter 3 on the web from a Japanese site. :tonguewag: I'm just so dang addicted that I couldn't wait till September!!!

Concur about Slumdog, good movie!

I have Frost/Nixon here and debating watching it tonight. Anyone see it?

Just watched The Cell 2 (couple days ago) and didn't care for it.

BTW, my daughter just watched The Orphan at the theater and she said it was really good. It's horror, so some may not want to see it.

I'm not sure that these qualify since I didn't rent them, but I watched these at Hulu.com over the last couple of weeks because they were rated as the top movies on the site.

Killing Zoe - It had pretty good reviews but I ended up hating it. The ending was actually pretty good, but it was a long drawn out process getting to that point.

Pushing Tin - I've seen lots better, but I did rather enjoy this. It's pretty old and takes us back to a time when Billy Bob and Angelina Jolie were together. John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton play the lead roles as air traffic controllers in NYC.

Saints and Soldiers - Maybe it's just that I'm a fan of the genre, but I really liked this movie and would recommend it to anyone. It appears many others shared the same sentiment too. It's set during WWII.

The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three - Keep in mind, this is the older, original film shot in 1974 with Walter Matthau. I'd read some reviews that said the new one in theaters (Denzel Washington, John Travolta) didn't live up to its predecessor. I of course have not seen the new one; though I want to, and I just wanted to know what the hoopla from the original was all about. I must say, I wasn't a huge fan of this version as it appears most everyone else was, and I'm hoping to like the newer one a bit more.

From Netflix, not Hulu
Frost/Nixon - Well done and was exactly what I was hoping it would be.

Not renting movies lately. Harkins here has White Castle. I crave on Saturdays, so I go. Not good for me, but have seen more movies in the last year than I have in forever.

Poster Guy....cannot believe you didn't give a thumbs up for Doubt. Great movie. The Hangover was hysterical. Bruno? Um? Borat was better. Last film I was was My Sister's Keeper, last weekend. Choppy. Cried a tad. Didn't read the book but know the ending was completely different and many fans were dissapointed. I know how the book ends. Would have been better.

Sean Hannity tonight. YOU know I love him. Was great.

Gotta get some sleep. How? Gonna drag behind tomorrow.

No, and I am a horror movie enthusiast! I for the first time in my life had a moment when I actually thought, maybe I should just turn this off, and that has never happened ! And it happened during the eyelid cutting thing....

is Haute Tension or High Tension. now..it has been dubbed over in english..but i (who usually dont watch many subtitled films) recommend u get the french version with english subtitles. there is actually little dialogue..and it allows the raw emotion to come thru.

the basic premise: Students Marie (Cecile de France) and Alex (Maiwenn Le Besco) head off to a remote country home to study for their upcoming exams. When night falls, a psychopathic stranger attacks, tying up Alex and taking her away. It's up to Marie to save her friend -- but first, she must figure out what is really going on.

i cant say much more as there is an amazing twist...but the acting from the lead girl is phenominal..and its pace is relentless..once the action starts it doesnt stop till 5 minutes before the ending. i think for me, it was the acting that made it so..believable. i was right there with this girl...trying to save her friend from a monster. oh and yes netflix has it :) http://www.netflix.com/Movie/High_Tension/70033368

for you horror/suspense buffs..it reminded me very much of wolf creek...not in plot but in tone and scariness.

Or, 1408. I too love Cusack. We also can't forget Con Air when mentioning his great works.

It was the movies 1408 and Awake (Jessica Alba Hayden Christensen - which I loved and see that most hated it), that lead me to Netflix. In my rinky dink town, I had to buy both of these films to watch them. That was enough for me, I was then hooked on Netflix since that point. We had no red box at the time (now have 2), but I can't imagine canceling my subscription. Especially with the instant watch feature.

I saw the movie (burned cd from a friend) of "orphan". Oh my, dont spend a penny seeing this one. just close your eyes and emagin a semi scarey movie about an orphan...ya thats just what this movie is about.

I never saw Wolf Creek and added it after reading your post. We just watched it a few hours ago and it was a good one. Thanks for the recommendation.

I always thought Wolf Creek was Cold Creek Manor whenever I saw it mentioned. When I initially read your post, I knew you were either crazy (and since your review of High Tension was inline with my own I kinda ruled that out), or I was thinking of the wrong movie.

Don't get me wrong though, I liked Cold Creek Manor too. I just didn't find it as high in the tension department as the movie High Tension was.

An oldie but goodie, Stalag 17. It's a tale of a group of American soldiers in a German POW camp. One of them is a mole. The tension builds as the plot and mystery thickens. On a bad note, the movie contains some silly "humorous" scenes that should have been toned down or removed completely. All and all though, Stalag 17 delivers a nice intriguing story. You can catch it on Youtube if you want.

Did anyone see the movie VAlkyrie with Tom Cruise? I tried to watch it this past weekend. I think it got pretty good reviews. The problem is that it was sooooo hard to buy into this movie. Tom Cruise plays a German officer with an American accent. Sorry, but I just can't get into it. Did anyone else have difficulty with it. They should have gotten an actor who could at least do a German accent. Liam Neison perhaps. I think Tom is a great actor but I just couldn't get through this movie.

I saw an independent movie from Netflix this past weekend. The name is Survellience. It is a very strange movie. It was quite difficult to watch and I had to ff through some of it.

It's about a series of murders in a rural midwestern town. (It was filmed in Canada, but set in US). It is VERY VIOLENT and I found it disturbing. It is a rather clever who done it, but too cruel for my taste. (The director is female). The entire movie takes place over one 24 hour period.

If you do watch it, check out the alternate ending on the Special Features section of the DVD. I liked it much better than the one that was chosen.

they are gettin TOO scary! well i have always loved monster movies, halloween and friday the 13th type. but in all of those, in the back of my mind is the...implausibility..it aint real life so its fun.

in the last few years...starting with "Hostel"...the focus has been on real people suffering- bein sadistically tortured both physically and emotionally and realistically at the hands of other real people.

anyone seen "the strangers"? i found the death scenes so disturbing..was like a weight on me.

its not cuz these movies are gorier than the older ones...but they are better acted, more plausible.

o well there is always Halloween 2!!

I just saw the movie "Knowing." I'm curious as to what others think about it. It had exciting parts, but was rather depressing in the end. I also don't think I really understand the meaning of the end.

WARNING SPOILER BELOW:

Why did they only take 2 children? Why couldn't the father go? Was it because he was not a believer? Where were the children running at the end? Was it heaven and if so where were all the other people? If the aliens gave the magic stone to the people who were destined to go away with them, then why didn't Lucinda (the little girl who wrote the predictions in 1959) get to go instead of dying. She had an entire room of the stones.)

I just didn't get a lot of things about it.

We just watched:
Orphan - Everyone else loved it. I thought it was a bit too long. I guess it was ok, but there were so many people here watching it that I had to sit so far from the TV (have a 46" HD Samsung) that it was hard for me to see. I really need to get glasses, but I keep putting if off. The length of over 2 hours was very noticeable to me because of this and may have effected my opinion.

The Burning Bed - I'm sure everyone has seen this movie. My daughter and her BF recently broke up and he's the super jealous type. I wanted her to see why it might be important to stay away with someone like that in the future. She really liked the movie (well, as much as anyone could love the story of domestic abuse) and it was nice watching Farrah Fawcett again.

We also have Drag me to Hell here. My daughter watched it and hated it, but I see it got a good review here. I was going to just send it back, but I think I'm going to watch it for myself. I almost missed The Skeleton Key because she said it was horrible. I loved that movie and would put it up there as a not to be missed film if you like the genre.

I saw Inglorious Bastards and it was awesome! It was a funny and violent typical Quentin Tarantino movie:laugh:

Natalie,

I loved Pushing Tin.

Guess I just like Cusack, because I also loved Grosse Point Blank, Runaway Jury, Serendipity, etc.

Looking forward to Inglorious Bastards with Brad Pitt; watched a trailer tonight and that definantly peaked my interest.

I cried like baby watching the end of Marley and Me I was watching it by myself while my husband was a sleep next to me it would have been funny for him to wake up and see me bawling at 1am in the morning. I have had to put a pet down and it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do :(

when Marley and Me came out a lot of people were pretty upset that the previews made it look like a nice kids movie and the end was so heart breaking everyone was leaving the threators in tears, and kids were very upset. I dont think I could handle that movie sence the mear thought of loosing my dog brings tears to my eyes.

Well another weeking end is quickly approaching. any new movies out or any thing stand out in your minds? There is a new one I want to see. the one about the north or south pole...somewhere where it is cold. that one looks good...but I wont go to the threator. I'll wait to rent it.

Another movie that I recently watched was, The Secret. I don't even know what made me watch it because I really didn't think it would amount to much of anything, but I really liked it. It's on instant watch at Netflix if anyone wants to give it a shot.

I am a HUGE Jimmy Stewart fan. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's a Wonderful Life are my absolute favorite movies of all time. My mother wasn't even born when they were made, but God are they both fantastic movies.

Yes, Jimmy Stewart was so awesome. I was astonished when I read about his military service - you may already know about this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_Stewart#Military_service

"A Few Good Men" is really quite good. Tom Cruise has never been better IMO. Jack Nicholson is also great, especially at the end.. "You can't handle the truth!"

"Meet the Parents" gets better every time I watch it. I can't believe I didn't like this movie at first! Ben Stiller's scenes with the flight attendant are classic.

While far from an expert on classic film and/or classic stars, there are few that measure up to Jimmy Stewart where morality is concerned, IMO. 2 that come to mind are, Paul Newman, and Perry Como. Alan Alda is up there too I guess.

Off topic as it pertains to WWII, Clark Gable was Adolph Hitler's favorite actor and he offered a pretty nice reward to any German soldier who could capture him unharmed and alive.

Jimmy Stewart was a true American hero during the war. There is no question about that.

OMG, that's so funny that you mention that flight attendant scene. I'm referring to the scene where he's about to board the plane and the flight attendant says that row hasn't been called yet (not the one aboard the plane). That's my favorite comedy scene of all time. Of course Robert De Niro reading the poem he wrote for his mother is hilarious too.

My daughter and I often joke about how many takes it probably took them to get many of those scenes shot. My daughter also has the scene of, why don't you like dogs Focker? Dogs are shallow animals, etc.. etc... down pat too. If anyone mentions dogs being better than cats, she ALWAYS recites that scene (and it's fairly long and I can't remember it all) and we both laugh our butts off. The person who liked the dogs better is usually left standing there clueless, but we don't care.

I'm not sure if you're aware of it either, but the girl who played Pam's sister (the girl getting married), she died in '05 of complications from viral pneumonia. She'd made several trips to emergency rooms, but they kept sending her home saying it was no big deal. She then collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital, but it was too advanced by that point to treat her. She was so young and beautiful. :(

The thing about it, he never grandstanded his military service. I've also read that he gave a lot to charity, but he did so quietly, and didn't use it as a self-serving PR stunt. Stewart was an all around good guy who happened to be a bomber pilot, brigadier general, and oh yeah, an excellent actor too!

I didn't know that about Clark Gable. Could you imagine if he was captured? He might have talked Hitler into surrendering!

The actress who played the flight attendant was so ON. She had just the right amount of "polite prissiness" that we're all so familiar with.. urrgh.

Robert De Niro was so good in this. Underrated, I think. I liked his cat speech too. Well, cats are underrated.

I saw Ann Rules movie this last weekend. I was a little disapointed. it wasnt nearly as good as I thought it would be...I think thats what happens when you read the book first. but I am still looking forward to next week I thought it was a much better story anyways.

The movie "Meet the parents". that flight attendant was sooo funny. I have meet people just like her...I went to buy cigs for my hubby at a drug store and the girl (who looks just like this girl) insisted on seeing ID. I was 60 at the time...I thought she was kidding...I still laugh everytime I see her. This is a great movie that does get funnier each time I see it.

with the high price of going to the movies or even renting we need to give our opinions of latest flicks to go see or to rent.
I rented "Coraline" I was really looking forward to seeing it...I was very disapointed...it was so ugly hubby and I had nightmares and were old..emagine what a child would have? It was very disturbing...from old fat lady in bakini to the bug chairs...very ugly.

How many starz it got...and thanks for the heads up....won't be 'buying' it.....we're on a roll......'Taken' thrills and chills....'State of Play' action doesn't stop....'The Soloist' maybe have to be geared toward the impaired...wow....just a tear jerker...would like to remain on that roll....so zip to Coraline...

I just watched the new release of, The Taking of Pelham 123 and I really liked it. In post #2 I gave my opinion of the 1974 version with Walter Matthau. I really didn't enjoy that film at all really (not horrible, just nothing spectacular). After seeing the new release, I just can't comprehend how anyone could say that the new one didn't measure up to the old one.

We rented & watched a movie I had never heard of and it was AWESOME !

"God Grew Tired of Us"

Its kinda of of a docu. type movie that follows a few "lost boys" to America. These boys/men see things for the first time EVER.
Like electricity, a shower, a toilet, FOOD !

Can you imagine ? I couldnt, until I saw this movie !

It was a GREAT movie and even held the attention of my kiddos.
We rented it from Netflix.

It's in my Netflix queue, and is indeed a documentary.

Last night, I watched "Anvil! The Story of Anvil" which is a documentary about a Canadian heavy metal band that made a minor splash in the early 1980s, and never totally went away. They're all in their 50s, have day jobs and families, but still perform. It was produced by VH-1 and could be shown uncensored on that channel except for a lot of bleeping, and a few fuzzy moments when they show old footage of the lead singer, who uses an object to play his guitar that is NOT a pick!

I'm definitely adding, "God Grew Tired of Us," to my Netflix queue. I often think about how interesting (and frankly, entertaining) it would be if we could go back and time and bring someone say from the early 1900s to this year and watch their reaction to EVERYTHING. This is probably as close as I will ever come to realizing that fantasy. Thanks for the recommendation.

I also wanted to say that I watched, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired (instant watch title on Netflix). I was absolutely blown away by the miscarriage of justice Polanski suffered. I honestly think it's the best documentary that I've seen. I know the fact that I was blown away by it is what probably makes it hit such status for me, but truly, all I can say is, WOW.

Here are two underrated, but classic movies that you might enjoy:

"A Face in the Crowd" starring Andy Griffith, 1957

"King Rat" starring George Segal, 1965

Look them up on IMDb. They are gems. You may be able to rent them through Blockbuster special order.

I have "A Face in the Crowd" ... it is a very good movie, hard to believe sweet Andy Griffith acted like that! I tend to like the older movies, for the most part, and have learned that if a movie says it is "unrated" that it's not for me!

I buy movies on eBay, and have had very good luck for the most part.

Just watched "jumanji" with Robin Williams, and loved it. I'm not above being entertained by children's fantasy movies, they are a lot of fun. Loved the Narnia movies.

Next week I'm going to order "Moment to Moment" with Jean Seberg and Honor Blackman on DVD. It's probably a copy from VHS because it's not commercially available on DVD. We have this movie on VHS, but DVDs are so much easier to use. "Moment to Moment" has one moment of pure shock in it that should make the hair stand up on the back of your neck (the first time you see it) and makes it a very memorable movie.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of very good movies that never made it to DVD. A real shame. Some good creepy movies, too. Great for popcorn and a hershey bar!

Also ... any movie with Johnny Depp in it!

Anyone remember ' Seems Like Old Times?" It's a Neil Simon classic.
Goldie Hawn, Chevy Chase, Charles Grodin, Robert Guilliame it's hilarious.
Another favorite is 'Tremors' starring Kevin Bacon. It's corny but entertaining.
We have a lot of the movie channels so I just DVR the movies when they come on and save them in my library.

I don't know if someone recommended it or if I decided to watch it while combing thru Farrah Fawcett's filmography, but a few nights ago I watched, Small Sacrifices. It too was a made for TV movie and based on a book by Ann Rule. I really liked it (though true crime content is hard to watch).

It's on you tube in 20 parts if anyone is interested. Here is part 1.

I watched "Milk" recently and loved it. Sean Penn is absolutely wonderful!

Marley and Me had me bawling like an idiot. For those fans of John Travolta, I watched a movie called "Lonely Hearts" with him and James Gandolfine sp? over the weekend. It's good, a story about 2 detectives trying to catch two killers who prey on women through the want ads.

Another horror film I enjoyed was "The Uninvited" with David Straitharn sp? again. I thought I had seen it before but it must have been the title to another movie. lol

I recorded it to watch later. I did see a portion of it. Maybe I'm too nit picky, but I thought the main actress' southern accent was waaaaay too fake. I'm from the south and can pick up a fake one easily. Not just anyone can do one. Most overdo it. If you can't do it, better to just not try. It is very distracting to me and often ruins the otherwise good movie. LOL.

I will try to enjoy the movie when I watch it and ignore the bad accent.

Actors with good southern accents:Sally Field, Tom Hanks, Elizabeth Taylor.
Actors with bad southern accents: Al Pacino, ? Sedgewick from The Closer, Julia Roberts and many others.

OH yes!!! I love that movie. Sick content but Farrah and Ryan are great in it. Farrah was a very underrated actress IMO.

Did you see the one she was in with Holly Hunter? It was set in the old west. Holly, a housewife and mother thought she was dying and picked Farrah, a rough saloon (prostitute) to replace her when she dies. Women were in shortage! It was a wonderful tv movie. It's called the Substitute Wife.

Once again, I'm not a big renter.

Have been watching WWII in HD on the History Channel. Excellent. Mostly live footage (a lot from families, never published before), with voice overs by actors, and then they also talk with survivors from specific episodes. There are several on tv tomorrow, starting at 9am (central). Excellent for anyone that is a WWII enthusiast.
