The president she tried to assassinate has been dead for nearly three years, and her longtime idol and leader, Charles Manson, remains in prison.
However, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme is about to get her first taste of freedom in more than three decades.

I don't like that she's being released, but I can definitely understand why she is. I wonder if she'll be moving in with Sandra Good. I won't be shocked if that turns out to be the case.

I surely hope that she keeps herself clean, too. I'm not convinced she's not a danger to society (especially if she hooks up with Good), but I pray they both just want live peaceful, law abiding, lives.

"HOUSTON – The Charles Manson follower convicted of attempting to assassinate President Gerald Ford is set to be released from a federal prison in Texas later this month after serving more than 30 years behind bars."

Has she ever denounced Manson?

As far as I know Lynette Fromme has never once denounced Manson.

I see trouble. Hope they keep a close eye on her. Wonder what the conditions of her parole are. According to Vince Bugliosi's book "Helter Skelter", she was his first and the most loyal follower of Manson.

I guess they put her in a mental facility so they could release her. Life term in prison, but not in a mental facility. How not charming.

To be honest, I never thought I would see the day that any of the people involved in the manson murders would be paroled. The sad thing is that the people who were brutally murdered are not able to have parole. I know she is very ill, but it doesnt change the crime that was done to innocent people. This is just shocking to me...and I am sure to the families of the victims.

I believe in second chances..except for Charlie Manson.
He is truly a Disciple of the Devil. Does he still have that swastika carved on his forehead? Shivers.

That swastika isn't going away. It's carved into his forehead. Personally I think they should all stay in jail. Squeaky included.

Squeaky Fromme wasn't a part of the Tate/La Bianca murders and she was never convicted on anything related to the murders. She attempted to assisinate President Ford.. that's why she's in prison.

And as far as I know, she's not sick either.

I think you're confusing her with Susan Atkins.

About Fromme: I hope she's rehabilitated but the lady is about as nutty as they come.

i agree. IMO, if anyone attempts to kill the POTUS, they do not need to be released period, no matter who the POTUS is. given the fact she was with the manson family, she is tainted for life and i wouldnt trust her or sandra goode. doest sandra used to visit charlie in prison? just hope and pray LVH will never get paroled, but after hearing squeky getting released, im afraid. and what is soooo ironic it is coming up this weekend, the 40th anninversery of the tate-labianca murders. just not right.
:rose: 4 the victims of charles manson and his "family". and especailly little baby polanski who never even had a chance.

He's still pulling her strings. But I think he likes it where he is.

I think by letting her out, its opening a pathway for her to get back in touch with manson. She attemped to shoot a president and then escaped from prison. What are they thinking?

It's hard to believe it's been 30 years, I remember thinking after her escape that she'd never be free.
But, unlike Hinkley who was found not guilty by reason of insanity, Squeaky has served her time and will be set free. Hinkley prolly will be someday too, now that I think about it.
Manson's still in jail, the flavor of our society has changed dramatically in 30 years so I am not sure she will be able to exact much mischief. I predict she'll live a quiet life, write a book etc, and get rich off her story.
I am jaded.

I am surprised they let her out but would not let out the one that is paralyzed and on her death bed

Squeaky didn't actually kill anyone, her gun wasn't even loaded as she approached Pres Ford.

The woman you're referring to stabbed Sharon Tate and her unborn son to death. Big difference, don't you think?

did not realize her gun was not loaded, that doesn't really sound like an assassination attempt to me, guess they forgot to mention the unloaded gun part in the article

LOL, I remember when Squeaky pulled this stunt. She claimed she just wanted to get Ford's attention and speak with him. Whatever she wanted to say to him, IMO, probably wouldn't have made any sense anyway!

I don't like the idea of Squeaky being out and about. IMO she is dangerous if she gets together with any of the remaining Mansonites, and they're out there.

Can you believe It has been 40 yrs sence the Tate/La/bianca murders?
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard about this awful crime...I lived 20 miles from murder and worked nights....I drove within 5 miles of the murder scene. we often drove by the spawn ranch going to my aunts house in Simi Valley. We saw the girls around. dont know if I ever saw Charley. But the girls yes...some lived near my auntie. they came from nice homes.

I was just born, but I have taken a HUGE interest in the case (as have many others), and always read any post about the murders as they pop up.

The good news is, all those convicted are still incarcerated and I pray it remains that way. Screw compassionate release, IMO.

I was two when this horrible crime happened.

My mother worked in SF and saw the Manson followers having their sit-ins and acting crazy.

I too have taken a great interest in this case. My daughter's math teacher befriended Tex Watson, and offered to forward letters to him if anyone wanted to write to him.

My daughter, just a 'tad' opinionated, (don't know where she gets it from  ) told him that she is not buying into his born again/minister stuff..as a result he said he would 'pray' for me and my daughter, since being Wiccan we were doomed to hell.

after being incarcerated for 30 years, I just cannot imagine the shock of being put into the world we live in. So many changes especially with technology. It will have to be very depressing for her to see what she has missed out on.

I was five years-old, vacationing at a beautiful, grand hotel in Monterrey, Mexico with my parents. I recall opening the door to our room that morning to find the daily newspaper sitting in the doorway as always. Apparently the standards for newspapers in Mexico were MUCH less restrictive than here in the states, because that morning there were huge pictures of the victims at the crime scene included in the front page section. My parents quickly snatched the paper from my hands and got rid of it, and my mom was visibly shaken.

Eight years later, I read "Helter Skelter" and have been following true crime stories ever since.

I was living in a little town in California called Campbell, those were my hippie years. I was in LA during the trial & saw a little of it.

These murders happened that summer I graduated from high school. Manson's face on the front page of the newspaper was enough to scare anyone, even without the details. His eyes were/are incredibly scary to me. Their habit of "creepy crawling" still give me the heebee jeebee's. He was ( and still is) once terrifying dude.

I was 13 years old, the summer of '68 my family took a two-week CA vacation (we lived in Ohio), and spent a week in the Bay area. We saw a lot of hippies, always wondered if I saw any of the Manson family members or even old Chuckles himself.

I remember the front page of the paper that morning, and hearing my parents talking about the Tate murders. I don't remember much being said about the LaBiancas, but I think my parents were trying to shield my siblings and I from the whole thing. As I grew older, I paid more attention to what goes on and when in college, I watched Helter Skelter on TV. Didn't sleep well for weeks after that!

I still follow the goings on of parole hearings, etc. GVS did an episode last Friday night on the Manson killings and they played some old tapes of Charlie singing and playing guitar. He was pretty good, actually. Too bad he's so sick and twisted, IMO, he could've had a career in music.

I tried to absorb everything about this case in the past. Interesting enough I recently watched a doc about the Manson Murders and heard some very interesting things that I did not remember or is new to me:

Tex was a football/track star in High School and was quite famous for it in his area. Drugs were his downfall.

After meeting a person connected to the Beach Boys and playing some songs for the guy, the guy decided he was not interested and declined to sign Manson. After this meeting the guy was dropped off at the home that would later be the MURDER SCENE. So it seems the entire thing might have been for a revenge motive instead of the race war motive that has been the theory for all these years. Interesting indeed.

Hi Phyl-
Did you know that Squeaky is currently incarcerated here in Fort Worth? I'm pretty certain Catherine Share aka Gypsy still lives nearby in Irving, too.

I wasnt born yet, just a few yrs later though.

When I was a teenager I went up to the Tate & La Bianca houses out of morbid curiosity (didnt approach the house, just from the street). The La Bianca house was easy to find based on the street name and the photographs in Helter Skelter (house number has since been changed).

My uncle met Manson when they were younger in McMechen WV. My uncle was at a friends house, Manson was friends with my uncle's friend's older brother so they met a few times. My uncle said he was creepy.

I was a newlywed living in New Orleans in the French Quarter. And my husband was out of town. I remember thinking if that could happen to someone like Sharon Tate then no one was safe.

Even today, with all the crimes I have read about since then, that one sticks in my mind.

It'll be interesting to see where Squeaky goes... It's been said that she's still a Manson follower, saying that she's married to him and all. I'm curious if she'll end up at the gates of Corcoran trying to visit him.

I'd like to know if she tries to contact Manson. If I had to guess, I'd say she's licking that stamp now.
