Nevada Supreme Court weighs OJ release on appeal
Updated: Aug 3, 2009 11:54 AM PDT
O.J. Simpson and a former golfing buddy are hoping their lawyers convinced a Nevada Supreme Court panel to spring them from prison while the high court reviews their convictions in a gunpoint hotel room heist.
Simpson and convicted co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart weren't in a Las Vegas courtroom today, but their lawyers got 30 minutes to argue for bond pending appeal.
A trio of justices from Nevada's only appellate court won't make an immediate decision.
It's rare for the court to hear oral arguments on bond, and even more rare to grant release.

LAS VEGAS – A trio of Nevada Supreme Court justices focused Monday on whether O.J. Simpson and a former golfing buddy received a fair trial in a gunpoint hotel room heist and whether the case was so unique that the two men should be freed from prison while their appeals are considered.
"This is post-conviction. That's what concerns me," Justice Michael Cherry declared during rare oral arguments by lawyers about whether the former football star and co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart should be allowed to post bond while their appeals are pending.

I would like to see C.J. get a break - but not Simpson.
I think he was guilty as he was found, but I think the punishment was based on somethign he was not found guilty of, had someone tried to steal back their own stolen stuff as was done here, not sure they would of gotten the same punishment or charges
I don't think OJ was quilty at all. To this day, I can't believe a real Vegas Jury would have convicted him. Very sad. Hope he is out tomorrow. Crazy stuff happens all the time when folks come for wedding in Sin City. I can just see these guys saying Let's run over to Palace Station. No one even got hurt.

As soon as I saw "Nevada Supreme Court..." on the Breaking News board I was afraid it was about this.
Personally, I hope he rots there.
imo
I agree. He did the crime, he needs to do the time. I think the Supreme Court only agreed to this incredibly rare hearing, because they knew if they refused it would make the news and they'd be accused of not being fair to poor OJ. He's had more preferential treatment than he deserves.

because of this or because of what you believe he got away with in the past?
All the people that speak to me about OJ's punishment, are glad he is in jail, but their opinions always link back to his first trial....so it seems you are making a good point.

Good point and I agree. It seems the happy ones really don't realize that OJ is in jail for the Vegas mess not the other trial in LA.

As long as he's in jail, I don't care where or what for. Should have been sent there in the 90's. Although it's not as if he's doing hard time. Please. I hope Nevada keeps him. In prison.
What prison is he in?

Which is where he needs to stay! Other prisoners convicted of violent crime have to stay while their appeals are processed, and he's no better than they are.

I think he was guilty as he was found, but I think the punishment was based on somethign he was not found guilty of, had someone tried to steal back their own stolen stuff as was done here, not sure they would of gotten the same punishment or chargesFirst - yes, if you go and pull a gun on someone to take back things they have stolen - yep, you will be charged with robbery. Yes, if you lure them to a hotel room so they'll be even more isolated and easier to rob, then hold them there at gunpoint - yes, you will be charged with kidnapping. It's a low degree of kidnapping - which is why it added so little to the sentence - but it is kidnapping.
Second - it wasn't his own stolen stuff. It was memorabilia for other athletes. It was a cell phone of one of the two men. Stuff he had no claim on. And it was stuff he claimed as his - that he had given away to his buddies because he didn't want to let the legitimate owner of it - the Goldman family - find it. The dealers had no way to know it was stolen, if it was - they were not the people who took it. They were just presented with stuff to sell.
Every detail of this was on audio - including the cell phone, the victim's request for stuff that was theirs not to be taken, and OJ's broken promise to leave the cell at the hotel desk. Not to mention OJ's gloating at the end about what was done, and attempts to change the stories of his co-conspirators.
This is a routine motion, routinely denied. I suspect they're hearing arguments either because it's OJ, and they want to dot ever I - or because the severance motion might have some validity - but that wouldn't help OJ - it'd help the other guy.

I've been here for all the discussions - there are some few who link the two trials - not most people. Not even remotely all of us. Not me, not the other posters who have already corrected you on this.
He deserved the jail time he got for this crime, because he committed this crime. There's a ridiculously huge quantity of proof of that.

He has a new number now that's a lot longer than his football one:

I think he was guilty of THIS. The statement about pulling the piece out in the hallway proves as much, but ultimately, who really cares? He's equally as guilty of 2 first degree murder charges and IMO, he is almost exactly where he belongs. Instead of Nevada however, he should be on death row at San Quintin, IMO.
It's unbelievable that anyone would run to his defense. It's absolutely reprehensible to me.
At least the GF he was seeing right before all this is still alive. Of course, she did have one trip to the emergency room prior to his conviction. OJ is a loose cannon and IS a threat to society if released. He thinks he's above the law.

Thank you for the link. I'm sorry there's no photo of the convicted felon.
The worst punishment for Orenthal is not having any women and I don't think he can do it.
Does he get conjugal visits?

What would be "normal"? The whole thing seems like a big deal to me! I think if I gathered some scum.... uh, I mean .. friends and went into a room with guns (and made sure everyone stayed put) - I would get put away for a decade or so. I think that both the hotel and Las Vegas LE more than frown on that behavior. But that is just my luck? LOL - if it was "his" stuff he could have called the cops.
Luckily no one got hurt - oops - someone did, didn't they? scared into a heart attack.
They can have all the trials they want - the result will be the same. Robbery and kidnapping will still be illegal.
(Underlining mine)
What, even for OJ? Surely not! 9sarcasm

Of course they wouldn't. This was payback time!! Something that should not be allowed in the justice system.

He did this, he can not talk his way out of his own voice on tape. If you think his punishment did not fit the crime, I would dare you to go to Las Vegas, dupe someone into meeting you in a hotel room, bring a bunch of thugs with you, pull a gun, threaten to kill him and then steal some things that do not belong to you, leave the room and then gloat about what you just pulled off. Then call the cops on yourself and let us know what kind of sentence you receive. I would bet that you get worse. OJ is where he is supposed to be, no laws were bent either way to accomodate him or give him payback for the Goldman/Brown murders.

OJ Simpson was the ring leader in a robbery. He's where he should be .

Robbery in a Hotel/Casino in Vegas? Probably the worst place he could have pulled this off and is why he got the time he did. Vegas was "handpicked" to pull this off. I guess one can say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas aka NEVADA. Hope he's enjoying his stay.

Karma is a b****, ain't it?
Simpson is a sociopath. Thinks he's above the law and feels free to do what he darn well pleases. This feeling was enabled and reinforced by the first jury.
I hope he isn't sprung. Let him rot.
