I'm really sick sick sick of scent dogs "getting it wrong". Scent dogs are valuable when they FIND something. When they actually lead cops to EVIDENCE.

I'm sick of people being convicted on what scent dogs think. They are valuable at tracking and finding, and completely unreliable at communicating what they think they know.

That wasn't the fault of the dog. That was the fault of the dog's trainer, Preston, wanting to be something more than he was. In other words, don't hang the dog for doing what Preston trained him to do... That dog was never properly trained as a "scent dog" or a "tracking" dog.

From your link:
Documents obtained by CNN show he could not even follow a scent for one-hundred feet. The judge determined the dog could only track successfully when his handler had advance knowledge of the case.
Nope.. Not the dog's fault. Hang the handler/trainer of the dog, not the dog.

Correct.

RachelRose... you're griping about scent tracking dogs.

Might you have missed the headline of the article in the link you posted?

Fake scent-tracking dog sends man to prison for 26 years

Keyword in the headline?

Fake.

Of course.

Maybe she isn't so much griping about the dogs, but rather that an innocent man spent 26 years in prison because of unreliable evidence.

snipped

Maybe RachelRose will start a thread regarding the above.

As it stands, this thread started by RachelRose is about 'scent dogs getting it wrong.'

Yet there is nothing in this thread about 'scent dogs getting it wrong.'

The article posted is about one dog whose owner/handler fooled a lot of people into believing said dog was a scent dog.

'Scent dogs getting it wrong' is not only a misleading title to this thread, it is completely wrong. Not one 'scent dog' discussed in the posted article. Let alone more than one.

Ergo, there is no evidence posted regarding 'scent dogs getting it wrong.'
