Thank y'all so much!...Here is a an article in the newspaper in Fairbanks where he lives...

Cat rescue mishap puts Fairbanksan in hospital

By Rena Delbridge

Published Friday, July 24, 2009

FAIRBANKS — A Fairbanks man is in serious condition at a Seattle hospital after falling 25 feet Saturday from a tree he had climbed to rescue a cat.

Joe Fletcher, co-owner of J and E Trees, was attempting to retrieve Sam, a solid gray Russian Blue purebred, from a tall tree at Jenny and Terry Ray’s place at Birchwood Homes.

He wasn’t even about to take compensation for the good deed, Jenny Ray said.

“He said don’t worry, just make a donation somewhere,” she said. “The guy was going up out of the goodness or his heart to get the cat.”

Fletcher underwent surgery to repair a torn aorta and mend broken ribs, and doctors were trying to reduce swelling on his brain, said Chris Held, who has worked for Fletcher for four years.

Thank y'all so much for the prayers and good thoughts...My dad is still in critical condition, and all we can really do for him right now is pray...This is an email from the lady whos kitty dad saved....:crying:

my husband saw everything. joe fell so fast he couldnt respond to catch him. my husband told me that joe landed on his shoulders and neck, his legs went over his head, thats where the ribs and aorta happened, then he bounced on his side. he wasnt breathing, terry turned his head slightly and it opened his airway, he started breathing again, he said "joe, joe can u hear me?" joe opened his eyes and his breathing was gurgly sounding. terry is trained in cpr and first aide. the ground that joe landed on was very springy and soft. terry said he didnt hear anything, like "lookout" or anything. u can call me if you have any questions we will keep praying for him.

Thank y'all so much......They are still tryin to get him to wake up...This is the update from my baby sis...:crying:

I just got home from seeing dad.

He is about the same.....He would wiggle his toe when mom would tickle his feet. I know he just wanted to tell her.....if you are going be touching them you better be rubbing them. :) We all know how much he loves his feet rubbed and how beautiful he say's they are.

He coughs every once in awhile and it sure looks painful. He makes some crazy facial movement and bites down on the ventalator tube.

I really wanted to be there when he wakes up. I tried to sing him the poor folk song....but as all my family knows - I am the least musically inclined of us all.

It feels good just to rub his forhead and his arm.

They said that he was off the ventilator the other day for 30 min. and breathing on his own. It was just to much work so they put him back on. But hey - I WAS HAPPY to hear he can do it.

We had Jamacca's baby shower today. What a perfect day it was!! Only two more weeks and dad will be a GREAT Grandpa Joe again....I am sure he will be awake by then and get to see our new Kaymen Ryan.

Pray for him to keep his fight and each day brings us new promise - all my love, Becki Boo

Brattnt, it sounds like he's on his way to recovery. It's great news that he can feel your mom touching his toes.

It'll be a long and painful recovery but he'll get through this. He sounds like a strong willed man. That's very important. And of course, he has the love and support from his family so that helps.

Continued prayers for your dad.

Thank y'all so much...This is the newest update..

The MRI and CT came back okay...They are gonna do a SSEP test tomorrow...This is what it says...

What is a somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP)?

A somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) is an evoked potential caused by a physical stimulus (usually a small electric pulse). Electrodes positioned over particular areas of the body record responses of the SSEP, these are then observed as a reading on an electroencephalogram (EEG). A SSEP can most commonly involve stimulation of the median nerve at the wrist, or the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle. This investigation therefore tests the pathway of the sensory nerves to the sensory areas of the brain, even though the stimuli are non-physiological.

When is the SSEP used?

A doctor may recommend you go for a SSEP test if you have been experiencing feelings of numbness or weakness in your arms or legs that may be due to problems affecting the somatosensory nerve pathway. These feelings are often very subtle and not easily detected in a routine clinical examination.

What does the SSEP detect?

From the SSEP, a neurologist is able to determine the time it takes for nerve fibres to relay a stimulus from the point of stimulation (wrist or ankle) to a detection site on the scalp, neck or back. By analysing the SSEP pattern, the neurologist can get an idea of how well these sensory nerves are working. Multiple sclerosis (MS) for example, can damage the myelin sheath insulating nerve fibres of the brain and spinal cord in a process called demyelination. The damage means it takes a longer time for signals to be relayed along nerve pathways, resulting in changes in the SSEP.

Brattnt,
We had to make a similar decision with my Grandmother about whether to put her on a ventilator or not. If we had, she would never have been able to come off of it and so her life would have been restricted to a bed in a nursing home. Its a rough decision to have to make.
I wish for you, your family and your father peace with the decisions being made. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

oh Brattnt- I've been thinking of your dad and your family this week and I'm so sorry for all of you.

My dad injured himself a year ago by falling off the ladder when he was on the roof and broke his wrist where he had to get donor bone and wore a fixator for several months. I'm not sure what decisions I would have chosen if he had suffered more severe injuries.

(now he has said he hopes he lives long enough to see how LOST ends)

I'm so sorry to hear this.

Your father is very lucky to have a family that takes his wishes so fully into account, rather than their own desires or hopeless wishes.

Doctors can be wrong - but they're usually right. A great many people persist in pain and suffering they'd never want, because the family hoped for a miracle - many more people than actually got the miracle.

Wonderful! I hope it goes well, I hope he is the million to one chance.

I've read enough cases like this to wonder - maybe it's taking people off the machines that enables it to happen. Maybe the machines breathing for you, doing everything for you, gives your body the signal to just continue shutting down.

I think it's a good option - let the body determine if you're ready to go or not - not the machines.

Sorry it has taken me so long to give an update....Dad talked!...He responded to my sister last night...She told him she loved him, and he turned towards her voice and said...I know!...This morning his nurse sat him in the chair, and got him all fixed up and said...Hows that?...Dad said...It's okay!...Just a few minutes ago my mom called and said that the nurse asked him if he was in pain and he responded YES!...The Dr's cant believe it!...I can though, cause the power of prayer is a mighty thing!...Please keep prayin for my dad....Thank y'all so much...

Wonderful news! Bless his heart! I'm still praying for all of you. (((hugs)))

My dad spoke a whole sentence yesterday!...My mom went to put the oxygen mask on his face, and he said...Get that thing off my nose!...She told him where he was and what had happened, and he said...Oh My God!...The nurse asked if he was in pain, and he said yes...His talkin is a little rough because he has the feeding tube goin down his throat, but you can understand him just fine, if you take the time to listen...He has some bleeding on his lung, and they will be doin a CT scan sometime today....Please keep prayin for my dad, and light a candle if you like...

Not the best update - but still better than where they started out - there was no reason to think he'd make it this far - and he has. No reason to think he'd talk again - and he did.

Best wishes - and I'm still so happy for him that he has a family making sure he is comfortable.

Bratty,

All of these months on the message board and I always just went to Haleigh's thread. I did not even know until today this thread was here. I guess I can't yell at hubby anymore for not seeing something right in his face.

I am SO SORRY about your daddy.

After 51 years of climbing trees and then saving a kitty I think God was ready for him to come home.

I know you and your family must miss him very much but as you said above he is in a much better place and I truly believe that.

Hugs,
