My 16 year old niece was rushed to the hospital this afternoon. The doctor determined she has Type1 Diabetes. Because we live in a small town, she had to be transferred 50 miles away to a hospital that has critical care for pediatric patients. She is very, very sick. Please remember her and her parents in your thoughts and prayers.

If anyone is still up...pray hard. My SIL just called and they are Life-flighting her by helicopter to Atlanta because the Drs in Columbus cannot get her condition stablized.

Thank you everyone for the prayers. She is still a very sick girl but she is stable and no longer in critical condition. Last night she was getting worse no matter what they did so they took her to Henrietta Eggelston Children's Hospital in Atlanta. If you have a sick child, that is the place to be. I feel like she will get the best care available there. I will keep everyone updated. Thank you again.

so happy for your family withay- that she's been upgraded to stable.

Lots of people do quite well living with diabetes if they are compliant- Halle Berry has said she was once a Type 1 and later became a Type 2 (it's confusing)

here's an article on that-

If you know much about diabetes, that does not make sense; the article seems to imply that also. In type 1, your pancreas does not work at all. In type 2 your pancreas creates resistant or defective insulin.

But anyhow, Desiree' is better though still in intensive care. She is coherent again and all of the "numbers" are better. She is still looking at a long recuperation and a huge life adjustment. And she is a normal teenager, she loves all of the foods that will be limited.

I know it was odd about what Halle has said- just two weeks ago my FIL was DX with T. 2 as his #'s were over 700, he was put on pills and injections, now his #'s are in the low 100's and he's stopped taking the injections in less than 2 wks. time period, my hubby & MIL are T. 2, & his sis is pre-diabetic.

However, my MIL and I disagree on many things on the subject- she doesn't feel that Type 2 has any bearing on a person's lifestyle choices (but my FIL is almost 400 lbs, MIL is around 240, SIL is around 300 and my hub is about 280) but she thinks homemade pancakes are "bad" but frozen waffles are "good". FIL's dietician recently told him that diabetics should never eat any cereal of any kind (exact opposite of what my hub's dr. told him to do, which is to eat high fiber cereal) so while I don't "live" with diabetes I'm around those that do.

Good to hear that Desiree' is already starting to feel better and that she got to the hosp. when she did. May she continue to improve every day!

Postergeist,
From everything I have read and been taught, while Type 2 has a lot to do with lifestyle, some folks are just genetically "cursed".
Desiree's father and I have the same mother but different fathers so this does not apply to her. My father is Native American and one of 6 children. All 6 of the kids had diabetes by age 40 whether they were thin or heavy, excercised or not. And most of my cousins on that side have also had the same fate. I was 42 when I was diagnosed. The only difference is that some of the family members have adjusted better and have not suffered the complications.
Des is better still today. Her memory is coming back and they started letting her eat today. Tomorrow she goes to class to start to learn all she will need to know and how to give herself insulin injections.

Thank you each and everyone. Unless she has a problem tonight, she will go home tomorrow afternoon after finishing the last class teaching her to give herself injections. She and her mother will stay with her brother and his family until Saturday (they live in Atlanta) when they will bring her home. Two reasons: we want her close to the Drs in case she has problems and we actually live 175 miles away from that hospital.
Again, thank you everyone for the prayers.

 very happy to read that Des is on the road to improvement and will be released.

She should have an amazing support group with so many of the family already living with diabetes- I wish her much success as she learns to manage her numbers.
