The 'green bag" thread made me think about asking about other "as seen on TV" products. lol.
I LOVE infomercials.
I always wonder what might be really worth it.
Any products that you've been "amazed" with?
I love:
"Strap Perfect" (they bring bra straps in so that don't show under certain tanks etc)
Magnetic jewelry.....
got these for my grandmother who had trouble with clasps. nice.
OK, now I'll have to recall some others. (I know there are many. I'm a sucker....)

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who loves infomercials. :) I rarely buy, but do love to watch them and get ideas.
Today at the Dollar General, in the "As seen on TV" section, were these hair combs that are connected by elastic (the elastic is covered with little beads to be decorative). They looked like something I would really like but there was no price on them and I won't buy anything with no price on it, nor will I usually ask.
One thing I'd really like to buy is the 'Redi Set Go Xpress', but I'm too cheap to buy it. I figure I'll see them at yard sales or thrift shops soon enough, lol.

I bought 2 packs..thought they were my miracle...my straps always fall down since I lost so much weight..I tried them..OMG..I felt like a horse in a harness..now take in mind, I hate bra's to begin with...OTOH..I gave them to my roommate and she shared one with her daughter...they both LOVE them!!!
My mom always said Iwas the hardest of her 4 daughter to harness..I guess I that's just the way I am...give them a try...If you don't like them, maybe a friend will love hem.

Isn't that funny?
Seems like things were always falling out. But I put a ton of things in my purse. I need a suitcase, not a purse.

You guys are so funny! I love watching that stuff and often "want" some of it. There is a store in Solvang, CA..it's a store that carries only those "Only on TV" things (yeah..right...like Mr. Moto said..you can get them at a drugstore!)..but it's such a fun place. Months ago we bought something..can't even tell you what it was..just a small thing...OH..I think it was a tie rack/wheel...so cheap..but it isn't "Cheap".
Going up there on Tuesday...will have to check out the "new" stuff! LOL

There are place on the net to "make your own."
Here is one I made this year, and mater is doing fine:

I bought the "Chop Wizzard" and love it. The veggies go on either the chop blade or the dice blade and you bring the lever over and press and everthing is nicely the same size for pizza toppings, fruit salads, potato salad, stir fry etc.

I came out of my shell and bought an Egg Genie at CVS last night. It was a $19.99 impulse buy. We already have a Nordic Ware Microwave Egg Boiler, which works pretty well, but only hold 4 eggs and tends to leak water. The Genie can do 7 eggs at once and cooks quicker than Nordic Ware. The eggs come out perfectly. Super easy to peel, too. A four compartment poaching tray is also included. The tray is small so I used medium eggs, but they poached up nicely. All and all, the Egg Genie is a good little appliance. It's well made and lives up to it's claims.

I hope nobody finds this too off color. I actually saw this advertized on late night tv, saying that it will help you go #2 because you will be more patient waiting, letting it happen more naturally. I thought it was hilarious. Did anyone else see this commercial with a guy sitting on the pot (somewhat obscured) practicing his putting?
Would you buy one? I might.

I want the snugglies.
I bought the SMART SPIN Storage System. I like it. The compact system is great for small kitchens. Same size lid fits all containers.
Here's the review of it on the 'as-seen-on-tv-reviews link:

I didn't like that one. The storage set-up is too rickety - and the lids didn't always fit the containers.
My very, very favorite is Great Hooks. I moved, and later both of my daughters moved and Great Hooks turned out to be just fabulous. Removing the hooks at the old house and then hanging the pictures , etc. in the new one was just fun and easy. And the tiny hole left behind was so easy to repair.
I found a knock-off brand in a local Bargain Town for about $2 a box and they were just as good as the original.
I've never heard/seen them. Do you have a link?
Reading that you found the storage set being too rickety reminded me of my brother and I buying the same set of dishes ages ago. Each set was a service for 8 plus serving platter and large serving bowl.
Fifteen years later I was moving and offered him my set to add to his set. He laughed and said they had broken so many he gave what was left (odds and ends) to a thrift shop long ago. My set was still complete with only 1 small chip on the serving bowl -- LOL.

I really thank you for this post! I've wanted one since I first saw it, but have been so disappointed with these products I've held off. I love soft-boiled eggs, but either undercook or overcook them.
And what I really like is that they use my grandma's "trick", poke the wide end of the shell with a needle. Lol, its built in!
Don't waste your money on that vidalia dicer thing, I had to cut onions so small for it to work, there was no need to have something else to wash. Works okay on peppers, but too much effort for me. I'm little and had to stand on the stupid thing.

You're welcome! I've hard cooked dozens of eggs on the Egg Genie, and they've all turned out nicely. Well, okay, one batch had green rings around the yolks. Stuff happens. The Egg Genie will cook hard, medium or soft depending on how much water is used. You may have to experiment if you're particular. I recommend using distilled water because the metal hot plate can stain easily. Even with distilled water the plate will spot a bit. However, if you pour a little white vinegar on and let it set, the spots will come out.

I'm a sucker for this stuff but don't send off for it. Most of it is available at Walmart or CVS and you don't pay postage. I have the Hercules hooks (off brand), the Buxton purse, The Aqua Globes and the magic putty. I LOVE the aqua globes; they have helped me keep some sensative plants "just right". I also love my Ped-Egg. It is the only thing I have ever used that keeps my heels smooth except an biweekly pedicure. And it is a lot cheaper! I bought the Green Bags but did not have any luck with them though I know other people rave on them.

YES!
And get this- I opened it up and me and the hubby were like, did you get a defective snuggie? I actually went on the net and googled how to put on a snuggie- seriously.
I still cant believe it, I dont think its that comfy to walk around in, it slips, so I told a belt from a robe and tie it around my to keep it in place, sometimes I turn it around and wear it like a robe- not what I expected at all!My granddaughter wanted a Snuggie....so I took her favorite robe, turned it around and tied it with the belt and she had her own little snuggie...same thing....robe/snuggie.

Anyone use one of those Smooth Away pads that "removes hair instantly and pain free?" I got mine for $9.99 at "Bed, Bath and Beyond." I don't believe it works; but, I'll keep trying!!
I would love to have one of those "Snuggies" but, it is much too hot here in South Florida!!
Yeah, all in all I love it! And thats a good idea!
gluing a couple of velcro pieces on the back at the waist works wonders.
There is nothing like the actual snuggie, my partner brought me a blanket...arghhhh i said i want a SNUGGIE! sitting at the computer on a cool morning i can keep my toesies and legs warm, lying on the couch its large and loose enough i can roll around when reading, and of course napping i get to snuggle into it. There are lots of ways to "make" one but somehow none measure up to my snuggie lmao
eta, the arms make posting on IS easy without exposing them to cold air while you feel all snuggied up. I think at the computer is my favorite use for it

I don't get it. What am I missing? What is so hard about putting eggs of any size in water and boiling (or gently simmering if being poached) that would require a special appliance? Its kind of like buying a $20 timer, isn't it?
I'm missing it too. Kind of like a rice cooker - I never got the point of having a special appliance for that since it's so easy to cook rice in the microwave or on the stovetop. But we all have our "things" and I'm glad Mr. Moto likes it. :)

iirc, in the ads they say it is a synthetic shammy. Therefore whoever buys one, is getting a genuine, authentic, replicated, simulated, imitation of a shammy manufactured in a different country (Germany in this case) giving more jobs to those overseas instead of our country.

I swear, I saw synthetic chamois for sale at Pep Boys back in the 70s. I may have even bought one or two over the years. Now I see ShamWow for sale all over the place. It's probably available everywhere except Germany!

As to rice cookers!!! I felt the same way you did until my mom gave me a small simple one that she never used. Max 4 cups, i keep it on that small back burner you never use and plug it into the stove plug.
I LOVE it now. I don't need to go searching for a different pot, it is easy to measure based on the lines and i don't have to watch it since it turns off automatically. Clean up is a breeze (except when i forget i used it and put something on top of it :blushing: then it is still a breeze but needs bleach to make me feel i can use it). I guess best way to describe it is like having a hot water kettle always on the counter to make a coffee.
i still don't understand why people by the big fancy ones lmao

LOL! Who on earth would buy a $830 rice cooker? And who would make one? Does it go out to the rice paddies and get the rice? LOL, holy cow.
VC - your rice cooker does sound convenient. I didn't know there were small ones, I've only ever seen the big ones. I could see using the kind you have. There isn't anything easier than instant rice, but using your rice cooker is probably much cheaper. Sometimes I will buy the instant, but usually am too cheap and always cook my rice in the microwave. It's done in 20 minutes.
I saw the infomercial for Cathy Mitchell's Xpress Redisetgo again this morning. It does look very small. I still want one though. I spent an hour on line the other night searching for coupon codes, promo codes, anything to get it cheaper and came up with nada. (I have this thing about paying full price for anything) I read where one guy said he bought his at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon, I called the nearest BB&B and they don't have it. I'm going to ask for it for Christmas.

I love mine! My experience is that they do soak up far more than plain cloths. They do warn you not to put them in the dryer because that ruins them.
And I LOVE my aqua globes. In fact, they now have some smaller sized ones for smaller planters and i got some of them also.

Thanks, penny. They are advertising that 'special' on the infomercial and website - instead of 3 payments of $19.99, they have "cut one off" and now it's 2 payments of $19.99. I don't know if anyone ever really paid $60, I think that's just marketing. (LOL, I'm cynical). $40 is a great price if it weren't for the $15+ shipping. I'm thinking I'll probably find it Best Buy eventually, or get it for Christmas and let someone else pay full price. Thanks again.

Yes, I guess it's an infomercial technique. They can arbitrarily inflate the price to whatever they want, and then say, "But wait! We'll make one payment for you!" I've also noticed they sometimes charge extra S&H for the "free" bonuses. It's better to just buy the stuff at the big stores. Target and Walmart give you 3 months to return an item - no problems.

Has anyone else noticed that they still show Billy Mays commercials? Makes me sad.
Maybe that's how Billy wanted it - his commercials shall live on. I think most people were annoyed by Billy at first. Then they got used to him. Then they ended up liking him.

Mitsubishi beats Toshiba. Their rice cooker costs $1000! I think these high-end (understatement) cookers are marketed mostly in Japan.
Cathy Mitchell does a bang up job on her infomercials. She makes everything look so simple, perfect and appealing.

Discovery channel had a wonderful weekend of Billy Mays and a series he did. I didn't get to watch much of it, just clips here and there. Really made me sad. He was such a wonderful, funny person.
The series is called Pitchmen. Very good and they did a nice tribute to Billy for the last episode of the season.

I have the Ped-Egg and love it as well. That thing works wonders! I bought it at Walgreens so I wouldn't have to pay S & H.

Withay - try the green bags again! Here is how: do NOT wash the fruit/veg before bagging (you'll wash them when you're going to use them), put a paper towel in the bag and and lay the veg/fruit on it and twist tie the bag. IF the produce is very ripe check the bag the next morning; you may find the bag interior is very wet. Wipe it dry and add a fresh paper towel. It is amazing to be able to keep fruit and veg fresh - I'm so happy to stop wasting them.
I found Always Fresh Containers for $9.98 at Taylor Gifts so I've ordered them. Couldn't resist - I'll let y'all know how they work out.
Also plan to order a waterjet power sprayer. Anyone have any experience with that one? I really need something to keep my deck clean and my table awning clean - I have alot of trees nearby.
Thanks for the explanation on the green bags, penny! I was washing all the veggies first and then putting them in the bags, and they weren't working as well as I'd hoped they would.
And please do let us know about the Always Fresh containers! I was going to order them hoping that they'd work, but I was concerned about the S&H. I wrote to the website asking how much S&H would cost to B.C. and no one answered me. I guess that answered my question.

I got some Rejuvenate for my tile and vynal floors. Works very well restoring the shine. DH noticed, so that's a good thing. And on GreenBags, yes, I don't wash until ready to use. I have no waste anymore. I take any plastic bag they come in from the store or packaging and get rid of it and just put the the veggies or fruit in the green bag, and fold over the top.

Has anyone else noticed that almost immediately after Billy Mays died, they'd replaced his voice with a woman's?
Especially on the Orange Glo for Hardwood Floors (which I have and is not "as advertised") ----you can see his feet and hands but there's a woman's voice on the commercial.
I noticed that on the OxyClean ones too.
Say what you will,Billy Mays sure had one of THE most recognizable voices in tv infomercial history.
I've seen his face and voice on some other things though like the Auger thinggie so maybe they are replacing him one product at a time?

I came out of my shell and bought an Egg Genie at CVS last night. It was a $19.99 impulse buy. We already have a Nordic Ware Microwave Egg Boiler, which works pretty well, but only hold 4 eggs and tends to leak water. The Genie can do 7 eggs at once and cooks quicker than Nordic Ware. The eggs come out perfectly. Super easy to peel, too. A four compartment poaching tray is also included. The tray is small so I used medium eggs, but they poached up nicely. All and all, the Egg Genie is a good little appliance. It's well made and lives up to it's claims.
thanks for sharing. i thought about getting one, but needed other people's experience with the product first. is peeling the eggs easier from using this egg genie, than by regular boiling in a pan. hate, hate peeling eggs.

Hard cooked eggs will peel very easily. Medium and soft cooked aren't quite as easy because the whites aren't firm. Cooking time is dependent on how much water you put on the hot plate. A little measuring cup is included with lines marked off for soft, medium or hard eggs. You still have to experiment to get it just right. I like mine hard cooked, but not so much that the yolks turn green.
An egg piercing pin is installed on the cooking tray. Supposedly piercing prevents the eggs from cracking during cooking. However, I've cooked lots of eggs without doing this and they didn't crack. The important thing is to run cold water over them immediately after cooking so they will be easy to peel.
Mr. Moto2
08-10-2009, 11:49 PM
I've never pricked my eggs and they don't break. I do add lots of salt to my water when I cook them and then dunk them in very cold water immediately when they are done. Never have a problem peeling them now.
This evening I hard cooked some eggs and didn't run cold water over them. I just let them air cool, but they were still easy to peel. Go figure.
On a related note, I used to always punch holes in potatoes with a fork before "baking" them in the microwave. I was told you absolutely had to do this or the potato would explode. Then I saw a guy on TV who said he never punches holes in his potatoes and they turn out just fine. So now I microwave my potatoes hole-less. They cook up better than ever.
Mr. Moto2
08-12-2009, 11:11 AM
LOL - you'll have me buying one of those egg cookers yet! Now with the potatoes - I always think that its likely that there is a sufficient hole that happens when I wash them - even if its just a fingernail prick. Haven't had one explode yet. I tend to start them in the microwave and then finish them in the convection oven - I like the consistancy of the "jackets" best that way. More like real baked potato.
lol.. Well if you do get one, buy it at one of those big stores because they have a 2 - 3 month return policy.
That's a good hybrid way of doing your potatoes. I don't have a convection oven so I'm out of luck.

i recently discovered that baking potatoes in the toaster oven is the BEST! the inside is nice and 'fluffy' and evenly baked, while the jacket is crisp. (and the kitchen doesn't get as hot as it would if the regular oven is used)
*after washing the potato, skewer it lengthwise with a "potato nail" (the aluminum transfers the heat so the potatoes bake pretty evenly inside. no need to poke extra holes since the potato is skewered)
*in the toaster oven, bake at 425 degrees for one hour (45+ minutes if the potato is on the smaller size)

OK..I just found a place to live..and the pictures showed up before the kitchen equipment..so needed to get them off the floor..at the most inexpensive way possible other than toss them.
So..I looked online...they are $4.99 (with 20 HOOKS) plus they include a "laser" thingie..then you pay..not sure but I think about $5.99 shipping? OK..that's 11.00?
In WalMart..they have 10...NOT 20 as online for $9.99..NO Laser thingie..but of course no shipping.
I'll be checking out the Solvang Store in a few days..but I'd guess..they don't have the "laser" extra either.
It's pay shipping..get the extra..or just buy the hooks. It's almost a "wash"..but I'd say go Online..get the laser..then buy the others at your local places. Sell the lasers at a yard sale! LOL
I think..and I'm being nice here..I think some of us get all "bought up" into this stuff..when we have the very best thing just sitting there in the toolbox..if we know how to use it?!
but I do love these hooks..they are pretty amazing. Now..WHY DIDN'T I think of THAT? or most of you?
It's like a danged coat hanger.through the wall..GHEESH..

I've never bought any of these things, but wanted to chime in and agree with VC about the rice cooker. They make wonderful rice, and one can make different kinds of rices in them. We make rice almost every day and have had the same rice cooker for about 20 yrs. They sell for under $40.00

I have that! I love it - don't you? We make wonderful pizzas - and it always feels like a party when you can watch them bake like that!.
Didn't think about it for a potato. Hmm - I'm going to try it for what we call a "1/2 baked potato" or a "garlic bread potato". Slice a baking potato in 1/2 lengthwise - score the cut side both ways - being sure to cut deeply, but not all the way thru. Rub it with butter or olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic and bake. Its a way of doing baked potatoes in 1/2 the time. I think I'll try that on the Presto Pizzaz. Maybe just start it in the microwave to help it along.
I bought the Pizzazz at Target last year. It was on clearance for $20. We don't see them at all in the local stores anymore. It does work great for cooking frozen pizzas - they turn out nicely. It's also good for reheating delivery pizza. But the finish on the rotating pan is not so great. Ours is scorched and has black specks baked into it. How about yours?

I got mine at Target also. The finish is fine - guess I'm cleaning it the way I do my non-stick pans. Never put it in the dishawasher - wash with hot water by hand with plastic curly-headed or non scratchy scrubber. I usually make my own pizza with store bought crust or put it on naan, pita or fr. bread. Can you order a replacement pan? Or do you just line it with Reynolds Wrap Release now? OK Just looked it up - new pan is $16.99
You know, I did occasionally line the pan with foil, and I'm thinking that may be the reason it got scorched. The heat might have been trapped between the metal surfaces of the pan and the foil. A new pan on Ebay goes for around $20 with shipping.
Here's an Ebay picture of a well "seasoned" pan - mine doesn't look quite like this, but it does have some brown discoloration:

That sure looks well seasoned! But is there a problem with it? Not sure there is any need for a new one. Clearly I don't make enough Pizza.....mine is barely seasoned looking.
Looks like the prices are about the same - from ebay, amazon or presto parts.
Yes, the prices are about the same with shipping. That picture is an extreme example. Mine doesn't look nearly as bad, but I can imagine it getting worse over the years. The main problem would be the non-stick coating losing effectiveness. It also looks awful. But what the hell, it makes good pizza!

Just tonight I bought the "As seen on TV" Topsey Turvey Upside down Planter. I want to see if will grow medical marijuana, just like it does with the tomatoes. I will update as needed.
:tongueside:
My Topsey Turvey is doing great even thought it isn't in full sun. We have about 20 tomatoes on it. No bugs on it at all.
Drawbacks are that you have to keep them watered often because anything that isn't in the ground dried out fast. They get super heavy so you need to make sure you use the right type of hook.
