I am currently dog-sitting for 7 dogs while their "parents" are up at Disney. The oldest dog (12) wakes me up at night by scratching at her bedding - I mean REALLY scratching - you wouldn't think a 5 lb. dog could scratch so hard - it really makes a racket. She does this for about 5 minutes at a time - then lies down and goes to sleep. Any ideas as to why she would do this?

I would say nesting. Omega does this everytime he wants to flop. He also relocates his pillow all over the place. Some dogs are weird that way.

Is the dog in your home or are you in his?

I'm in their home - my son's house. Surely glad I'm NOT up in Disney - it is hotter than hot here (and there) - the Chihuahuas and I are very happy in the air conditioning. Maybe she is "nesting." I never though of that. Two of the little dogs are mine and the others belong to them. VERY cute! A pack of wild Chihuahuas!!:w00t:

My son's backyard is fenced - mine is not! That's why I go over there to dogsit!! My dogs are trained to stay in my backyard; but, theirs are not - so, at my house, the little guys just scatter to the wind and I almost have a stroke till I catch them.

3 of my 4 house dogs do that. They scratch the bedding, turn circles, scratch some more until they get their bedding arranged to their satisfaction then they settle down to sleep.

Oh yes, my chihuahua has to rearrange any blanket, sheet, even pillows (!) til he's satisfied. And, the noise he can make when he yaps is incredible. He "talks" to us and gets po'd when we don't understand.

I am dog sitting my dil's chihuahua until tomorrow. We live just around the corner from each other & anytime Mia gets out she comes straight here. When my dil told me she was going to her mom's for a few days I told her to bring Mia here because she would find a way out of the house & come anyway. Dil agreed & was going to bring her the next afternoon when she left out. Well apparently Mia heard the conversation & decided to come early. At 6:15 AM!!!! She always comes to the front door, barks & scratches until she is let in. Well we were sound asleep & did not hear her @ the front door so she comes around the side of the house to our bedroom windows & barks until she wakes us & she is let in.

I have 3 Chihuahuas and all three do that. Then they circle a couple of times to get the blanket/pillow just right and lay down. First sign of noise they are back up and the ritual goes on and on.
