Sounds like a good book. I personally don't see any good reason that science and religion can't coexist. I wish more religious leaders would be looking for the bridges between science and relgion, not looking for the potential conflicts and building careers on them.

I hope the hardline creationists who insist on literal translation of the book of Genesis can be eventually be persuaded to accept the ever-growing mountain of scientific research that indicates evolution is fact.

I think the War between Science and Religion is hurting Religion a lot more than its hurting Science. I think its a big contributor to dropping church attendance, especially by young people, which is unfortunate because they are missing out on the spiritual and social comfort available there. I don't think controlling how science is taught in school is going to help much, since the truth will eventually triumph, for example that the world is round and that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

Groups like the ones Sen. Ensign and Palin and others belong to frighten me, with their demon exorcism and rapture and devaluing of science. They encourage their members to feel that other people are evil and unfavored by God, which is potentially dangerous. Blind faith in misguided leaders always leads to ruin.

What I've seen lately is a vicious fight between the "New Atheists", led by people like PZ Myers, Dawkins, Coynes, and even Sean Carroll, who insist that science and religion are NOT compatible at all, against "accomodationists" like Chris Mooney (mentioned in the OP's article) and Sheril Kershenbaum on the other side who wrote a book called "Unscientific America" which leveled some criticism at New Atheists like PZ Myers.

Religion and science are absolutely incompatible?

1. The "New Atheists" will drive away Americans from science with that attitude. Chris and Sheril's criticisms are valid.

2. It is patently FALSE, anyway. Religion can be perfectly compatible with science. It all depends on the nature of the religious belief.

I also read blogs written by PhD philosophers who specialize in the philosophy of science and the philosophy of religion. Their intelligence and understanding of the matter makes the PZ Myers of the world look like the foolish ignorant dunces that they are.

this has always been true, the bible doesn't have to be true for there to be a god (higher power or whatever you want to call it), I think we all know that, even though some do not want to admit it
