 A new study shows how cats use their purring to get what they want- from you!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8147566.stm
Researchers at the University of Sussex have discovered that cats use a "soliciting purr" to overpower their owners and garner attention and food.
Unlike regular purring, this sound incorporates a "cry", with a similar frequency to a human baby's.
The team said cats have "tapped into" a human bias - producing a sound that humans find very difficult to ignore.

Oh heck yeah - we're exploited and manipulated every day of our lives.
They've definitely got it down to a science.

I read that feral cats will not meow at/to people, that it is a learned trait of tamed kittens... which was very interesting to me. They definately learn really early how to manipulate people with a precious meow.

My 4 cats run my household...each & every one has a different purr for a different meaning and believe me, they have taught me well to uderstand each one of their purrs. I am very well trained by each & every one of them.

VERY seldom will you hear my cat purr. The only time she seems to is when she crawls up on me and wants to snuggle under cover of a mink blanket. Even then it isnt for very long. She's never purred much since I adopted her a year ago

I so wanted to avoid this thread but with my two cats its impossible. I would love to think we the people are in charge of this house yet the minute one of them just looks at us, we strangely know exactly what they want and jump to do their bidding.
Raven purrs when it suits him, and always knows exactly when to do it, and when it is to cuddle his purr is deeper sounding and more soothing. Its like he is saying, "yes I am here on your chest now sleeep, you are feeling very sleepy...". He has a purr for his favorite meals which sounds more like someone is trying to break beat while he is purring, and then he has his "yes I do like you" purr that lasts for a moment before he is off to get someone else to do his bidding.
Raven is our baby, he is 7 now but we have had him since he was born and he was the sickly one of his litter so we all coddled him.
Lucky we got as a little kitten. He was and is being raised by our youngest daughter. He is a people's cat no question about it. He thinks he is a dog, everyone should love him (even dogs), but he purrs only when he is interacting with our youngest daughter. He even lets her bathe him without scratch, clip his nails, and pluck the debris from his coat when he comes back in. No one else is allowed to do any of this for him and he is a little over a year old now. We can't scratch his belly, scratch his ears, or get him to cuddle with us. It has to be her at all times.
Cats are nothing like dogs. They take it very personally if you don't have the minute of attention they are demanding from YOU, and they will go out of their way to show you how they really don't need you. And you know that they will take the slightest sign of your adoration of them as a victory, after all it is us who need them, and now we know it.
